The Utah Hockey Club have signed restricted free agent defenceman Sean Durzi to a four-year, $24 million deal, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.

Durzi, 25, played last season with the Arizona Coyotes, recording nine goals and 41 points in 76 games.

The 6-foot right-shot defenceman was acquired by the Coyotes from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a draft pick in June of 2023.

He is coming off a two-year, $3.4 million deal he signed with the Kings in September of 2022.

{coyotes} Utah owner Smith calls 2024 NHL Draft ‘milestone moment’ for new franchise

--

LAS VEGAS -- Ryan Smith knew before it happened how big draft night would be for the Utah Hockey Club.

"It's the first time, the first moment," Utah's co-owner said before the start of the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft at Sphere in Las Vegas. "There's a kid who has worked his entire life to get to this moment and he gets to be the very first draft pick in the Utah franchise history. That's pretty incredible. That's something that no one else is ever going to be able to say. I've learned in life that so much is about the story you can tell, and that's a pretty cool story to tell."

Tij Iginla gets to tell the story. He will forever be known as the first pick for the NHL's newest team.

Smith and his wife, Ashley, stood on stage at Sphere and announced Iginla, the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, as the No. 6 pick in the draft to the Utah Hockey Club.

Iginla said he had "a little bit" of an inkling that Utah would take him, but that didn't matter in the moment. The emotions took over, a combination of a lifelong dream being realized and the realization that he, and only he, can lay claim to being the first pick by the Utah Hockey Club.

"It's a huge honor for sure," said Iginla, who had 84 points (47 goals, 37 assists) in 64 games for Kelowna of the Western Hockey League last season. "It would have been a surreal feeling to hear my name called by any team, but to be the first pick of a franchise is really cool."

It was three years ago when the Seattle Kraken made forward Matty Beniers their first draft pick, selecting him No. 2 in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Beniers, who announced Berkly Catton as the Kraken's first-round pick at No. 8, said Iginla should feel special about being Utah's first pick because it is an honor and it still means a great deal to him.

"It's pretty cool to think that you will have cemented some kind of place in that team's history," Beniers said. "I don't want to say there's a little bit of pressure, but I think it's good, it's exciting and it's a cool thing to think about that you're the first one."

After picking Iginla, Utah made a move to get back in the first round so they could select Cole Beaudoin from Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League with the No. 24 pick.

"New franchise and second ever pick, it's incredible just to even think about that," Beaudoin said.

Utah traded three picks to the Colorado Avalanche to move up to No. 24, proving how much they valued Beaudoin. They sent the Avalanche picks No. 38 and 71 in this year's draft and a 2025 second-round pick that previously belonged to the New York Rangers.

"To me, his work ethic might change the culture of our organization, just how hard he plays the game," Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said.

Armstrong also put some pretty lofty expectations on Iginla.

"I told him when I met with him, I said, 'We've got a lot of 20 goal-scorers on our roster, we're looking for a 50-goal scorer. No pressure,' " Armstrong said. "We really love him, not only as a person but as a player. He has everything that we like."

Beyond Iginla and Beaudoin, this was a seminal moment for NHL hockey in Utah months before a game will even be played at Delta Center.

The draft is the first NHL event since the establishment of the franchise.

The NHL Board of Governors approved the establishment of the Utah Hockey Club on April 18, and the Smiths officially closed on the agreement with the NHL to bring hockey to Utah on June 13.

"This is a big day for the state of Utah, it's a big day for this new franchise," Smith said. "It's a milestone moment for all of us, for our state and I think for hockey. We're excited. We couldn't be more thrilled this is happening, but I will tell you, if you would have told me in February that we'd be sitting here right now here at the draft, I would have said you're crazy. But this is what we do. We know the state is ready, we're ready and today is a big moment and a milestone for everything we've been working on."

Armstrong said it was fitting that the Smiths were on stage with him to make the announcement that Iginla was the No. 6 pick considering how hard they worked to bring an NHL team to Utah.

"What better way to usher in that era with them making the pick at the Sphere," Armstrong said. "It's one of the greatest places I've ever seen to hold a draft. It's an amazing place. It was an amazing first day for us. We targeted some guys and we had good fortune. They were there."

And now they're part of history, Iginla and Beaudoin sharing the unique distinction of being the first two first-round picks by the still yet to be nicknamed NHL team in Utah.

"It is pretty cool symmetry," Beniers said. "That is where you're starting in your pro career and obviously with the franchise or a new expansion team, that's their start too."

{coyotes} Utah Hockey Club makes splashes by trading for Sergachev, Marino

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ryan Smith, the energetic and determined owner of the NHL's newest franchise, was perhaps telegraphing the Utah Hockey Club's approach when asked to assess his team's gradual rebuilding timeline.

"I like the position that we're in," Smith said. "And so I think that's something that we're always checking in on. And that's the plan, until it's not the plan."

Smith made his comments on Friday, less than an hour before the first round of the NHL draft. Some 18 hours later, and about a half-hour into the second round Saturday, it became clear Utah's plans shifted noticeably into the fast lane since relocating from Arizona to Salt Lake City.

Making two trades minutes apart on Saturday, Utah acquired two-time Stanley Cup champion Mikhail Sergachev from Tampa Bay in a blockbuster and got fellow defenseman John Marino from New Jersey.

"Woke up this morning after I slept for a good two minutes and said, 'Let's shock the world,'" general manager Bill Armstrong said.

Whatever constraints existed under former Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo have been lifted by Smith, the 46-year-old who made his fortune in the tech industry, and now is transforming Utah's sports landscape as owner of the NBA Jazz and MLS team Real Salt Lake.

A buzz rippled through the crowd at Sphere when NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly announced the Sergachev trade early in the second round. Utah sent defenseman J.J. Moser, forward prospect Conor Geekie, a 2025 second-rounder and the 199th pick in this year's draft.

Daly was back at the microphone not long after to inform fans and the rest of hockey that Utah was not done, getting Marino and the 153rd pick from the Devils for No. 49 and Edmonton's second-rounder in 2025.

Though Smith and Armstrong cautioned they would not be free-spenders once free agency opens on Monday, that didn't mean they weren't going to improve the team in other ways during the two-day draft weekend.

The club entered the draft with 13 picks, and Armstrong delivered on his intention to use some of them as assets. After using the team's first pick by selecting forward Tij Iginla — son of Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla — at No. 6, Armstrong traded three picks to Colorado in moving up 14 spots to select center Cole Beaudoin at No. 24.

"It's worked out well, just as we drew it up," Armstrong said.

Trading Sergachev and his $8.5 million annual salary through 2031 could clear space for Tampa Bay to keep longtime captain and face of the franchise Steven Stamkos, a pending free agent. The Lightning also sent forward Tanner Jeannot to the Kings in a separate move, which frees up money for defenseman Victor Hedman's pending contract extension to keep him with the organization for the foreseeable future.

In Arizona, the Coyotes were known for being in a perennial rebuilding mode in making the playoffs just once in the past 12 years, while relocating from one arena to another before finally moving to Salt Lake City in April.

It's a whole new world in Utah, where the so-called Hockey Club (for this season) has already generated 30,000 season-ticket deposits for a made-for-basketball facility, the Delta Center, with a seating capacity of 16,200 for hockey — and not all directly facing the ice. A permanent name is coming before 2025-26, with Utah HC, Blizzard, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom and Yeti the six possibilities.

"We're the youngest state (by demographic), and we're also the fastest growing. So if you look at both of those metrics, that's something the NHL is going to be able to look at and say, 'Wow, like we made the right move,'" Smith said.

For Smith, it's a matter of balancing his enthusiasm and patience.

"You're managing polar opposite emotions at all times. Like, you want to win now, but you want to win for the long term. And you want to create this culture," he said. "But we're young, and the future looks really bright."

Brighter still after this weekend.

The Utah Hockey Club have signed defenceman Michael Kesselring to a two-year extension, the club announced Friday.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports the deal has an average annual salary of $1.4 million.

Kesselring played with the United States at the world championship after the regular season ended.

The New Hampshire native has five goals and 19 assists in 74 career games with the Coyotes.

{coyotes} NHL announces rule changes for 2024-25 season

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today a series of rule changes for the 2024-25 season.

These rule changes were unanimously approved by the League's Board of Governors, NHL General Managers and the NHL/NHLPA Competition Committee. NHL Hockey Operations will work on the precise Rule Book language over the coming weeks.

Following is an overview of the changes:

Rule 38.2 (Situations Subject to Coach's Challenge)

A coach's challenge now will be permitted to take down a penalty for puck out of play. This only will apply to delay of game penalties when the puck is determined to have deflected off a player, stick, glass or boards, and not on a judgment call on how the puck left the defensive zone (e.g., batted pucks or if the puck was shot out from the defensive zone). In the event of a failed challenge, another two-minute minor penalty will be assessed (in addition to the existing delay of game penalty).

Rule 63.8 (Line Change Following Dislodged Net)

There will be an adjustment to Rule 63.8 so that the defensive team cannot make a line change in the event its goaltender accidentally dislodges the net (old language applied just to skater).

Rule 76.4 (Face-Off Procedure – Centers)

Following an icing, the offensive center also now will receive one warning (same as the defensive player) for a face-off violation.

Rule 75.3 (Unsportsmanlike Conduct – Player Sitting on Boards)

The referee now will provide the offending team (coach and players) with one warning regarding players sitting on the boards (and will so advise the other team). After one warning in a game, the team precipitating the warning will be issued a bench minor penalty for future violations.

{coyotes} Utah ‘ushering in a new era’ at 2024 NHL Draft, GM says

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

With the No. 6 pick of the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft, the Utah Hockey Club won't just select another prospect.

"You're really ushering in a new era," general manager Bill Armstrong said.

This will be the first NHL event since the establishment of a new franchise in Utah. As part of the deal, the Arizona Coyotes franchise became inactive, and Utah acquired its assets, including its management team, scouting staff and League-leading 13 picks in this draft.

The No. 6 pick will be the first to pull on Utah's new colors: rock black, salt white and mountain blue.

The first round will be at Sphere in Las Vegas on Friday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS), and Utah will hold its first draft party at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. The party will be free. The team store and limited food and beverage vendors will be open.

"There's a lot of excitement around our organization about the new and about where we're going, and it starts at the draft," Armstrong said. "That's the first kickoff where we're walking [in] there with the Utah colors and go to work, so there's a tremendous amount of excitement around just having the first draft and representing Utah. It's going to be a great day."

Who might be there for Utah at No. 6?

Armstrong said a lot of players finished the season strong, changing a lot of NHL teams' draft boards. Anywhere from 10 to 12 players could go after the No. 1 pick, expected to be Boston University center Macklin Celebrini by the San Jose Sharks.

"It's wide open," he said. "I think there's going to be some surprises that happen due to some of the players just playing so well at the end of the year. It's exciting times when you get down to it."

Rounds 2-7 will be Saturday (11:30 a.m. ET; ESPN+, NHLN, SN, SN1).

Utah has three picks in the second round (No. 38, 49 and 65), three in the third (71, 89 and 96), two in the fourth (98 and 103), one in the fifth (135), two in the sixth (167 and 190) and one in the seventh (199).

"If you're a scout, this is where you want to be," Armstrong said. "You're picking high and often. It's a really good position to be in. This is the way that we designed it and built it. We're an organization that will have a chance to win a championship, but only through the draft. That's a big part of what we're doing."

Armstrong said the large number of picks allows Utah to be aggressive, perhaps taking a chance on a player with high upside instead of making what would be considered a "safe" selection for fear of making a mistake. It provides more margin for error.

It also gives Utah the currency to "buy" players via trade, as the Coyotes did when they acquired defenseman Sean Durzi from the Los Angeles Kings for a second-round pick June 24, 2023.

Utah will hold its first development camp next week. The prospects will skate at Park City Ice Arena in Park City, Utah, on Monday and Tuesday, then play an open scrimmage at Delta Center on July 5. It will be 4-on-4 with some 3-on-3 and a shootout.

In addition to this year's draft class, first-round picks Connor Geekie (2022), Maveric Lamoureux (2022), Dmitriy Simashev (2023) and Daniil But (2023) are among those expected to attend.

"That's kind of our first time we're putting the skates on the ice in Utah," Armstrong said. "It's going to be great. It's going to showcase all our prospects from this year's draft and past drafts."

The free agent market also opens Monday. Utah has tons of salary cap space, and Armstrong identified a need for defensemen. But four years into a rebuild, Armstrong said he doesn't want to rush the process, spend wastefully or raise expectations too high too quickly. Arizona (36-41-5) finished seventh in the Central Division in 2023-24.

"You have to set realistic expectations for the group and understand that we're a young group," Armstrong said. "We're an entertaining group. We can score. There's a lot of good things that we can do. But I don't necessarily, by adding and filling up our cap, think that we're going to win the Stanley Cup next year. So, we have to be very strategic and smart about how we use our money in free agency."

There is plenty of excitement in Salt Lake City for now. Armstrong said the staff has been excited to receive new swag. People have been recognizing him, waving to him on the street.

"They're tuned in," Armstrong said. "This is a big thing. This is a big thing in the state of Utah and in Salt Lake, and you can feel that. And so, for us to go up on stage with the new colors and all that, it's going to be exciting. Yeah, it's a really exciting point for us."

{coyotes} Roenick emotional over election into Hockey Hall of Fame

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

Jeremy Roenick was waiting at a Starbucks drive-thru when he got the call from the Hockey Hall of Fame that he never thought he'd receive.

"I couldn't give them my money, couldn't get my coffee. The guy was looking at me with tears in my eyes. It was kind of embarrassing but also one of the greatest moments ever," the 54-year-old said about being elected as part of the Class of 2024.

"I had just gotten out of the gym and saw a 416 number and I froze. This is crazy for me."

Selected by the Chicago Blackhawks with the No. 8 pick in the 1988 NHL Draft, Roenick had 1,216 points (513 goals, 703 assists) in 1,363 career games with the Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks. He is fourth in points in NHL history among United States-born players, behind Mike Modano (1,374), Patrick Kane (1,284) and Phil Housley (1,232).

Roenick's best seasons came early in his career with the Blackhawks. He had 103 points (53 goals, 50 assists) in 1991-92, and an NHL career-high 107 points in both 1992-93 (50 goals, 57 assists) and 1993-94 (46 goals, 61 assists).

He announced his retirement from the League on Aug. 6, 2009.

"I probably should've been more humble in my career," Roenick said. "Obviously, had a lot of tough parts in my career but also a lot of great parts. This is the most I've ever felt humbled. The last four months of my life have been different for me, a change of path.

"I think I had to look at my life and how I was living it, with my work, with the things I was doing, battling mental issues and things I just wasn't very happy about. Sometimes you have to make a life change and make yourself accountable for a lot of things, which I did. I made a promise to myself that I'd be more grateful of friendships and family and things I have and not take things for granted and be more present than all over the world. Be everything for everybody. Sometimes you have to take a look in the mirror, and I did that. Life's been one good story after another since that happened. This is the cherry on top. Very grateful."

Roenick will be entering the Hall of Fame alongside former NHL forward Pavel Datsyuk and defenseman Shea Weber, and former United States women's national team forwards Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl. Former general manager David Poile and current NHL senior executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell were elected in the Builder category.

To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, candidates need to receive at least 75 percent of the vote from the selection committee. A maximum of four former male players, two former female players, two builders or one builder and one retired official may be inducted in a single year.

The induction ceremony will be held at the Hall of Fame in Toronto on Nov. 11.

Roenick admitted there was a time he thought he'd never get into the Hall. Now, the dream has come true.

"Of course it went through my mind, but you have to understand the process," he said.

"It's what Mike (Gartner, chair of the Hall of Fame selection committee) talked about earlier. When you wait for it, and I waited for it, never knowing it would happen, it means more because it hit me really, really hard. The tears came and I didn't expect to have that much of an emotional reaction, but I did."

{coyotes} Report: Meruelo walking away from Coyotes' ownership

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

It appears that Alex Meruelo is walking away from the ownership group of the Arizona Coyotes.

Sources tell Craig Morgan and PHNX Sports that a week after the team's plan to purchase land in Phoenix fell through, Meruelo and ownership addressed Coyotes staff on Monday and told them they have no plans to pursue further arena options.

A 110-acre tract of land in North Phoenix had been targeted by Meruelo in hopes of ending the Coyotes' long-running bid to find a permanent home. When the auction for the land appraised at $68.5 million was pushed back until this summer, Meruelo followed the advice of the NHL and opted to sell the franchise to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith in April.

The Smiths moved the franchise to Salt Lake City, renaming it the Utah Hockey Club. Meruelo retained the Coyotes' name, logo and trademark with plans to resurrect the team as an expansion franchise if a new arena is built within five years.

With that land auction now cancelled, the future of the team has been in doubt.
