{coyotes} Sergachev, Marino added to shore up defense for Utah in inaugural NHL season

2023-24 season: 36-41-5, seventh in Central Division, missed Stanley Cup Playoffs

Key arrivals

Mikhail Sergachev, D: The 26-year-old was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 29 and is expected to be Utah's top defenseman this season. A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Lightning (2020, 2021), he had 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 34 regular-season games and one assist in two Stanley Cup Playoff games last season. ... John Marino, D: The 27-year-old was acquired in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on June 29. He had 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) in 75 games last season and is expected to be a top-four defenseman for Utah. ... Kevin Stenlund, F: The 27-year-old signed a two-year contract July 1. He had 15 points (11 goals, four assists) in 81 games with the Florida Panthers last season and one assist in 24 playoff games to help the Panthers win the Stanley Cup. He is expected to fill a bottom-six role.

Key departures

J.J. Moser, D: The 24-year-old was traded to the Lightning on June 29 as part of the Sergachev deal. Moser was part of the Arizona Coyotes' top defense pair last season and had 26 points (five goals, 21 assists) in 80 games. ... Josh Brown, D: The 30-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on July 1. He had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 51 games with the Coyotes last season.

On the cusp

Josh Doan, F: The 22-year-old had nine points (five goals, four assists) in 11 games with the Coyotes after making his NHL debut March 26. He also had 46 points (26 goals, 20 assists) in 62 games with Tucson of the American Hockey League and was named to the AHL All-Rookie team. He'll be expected to play a significant role for Utah this season.

What they still need

Utah made big moves in the offseason by acquiring Sergachev and Marino but still could use another defenseman, especially one with penalty-kill experience. The Coyotes were tied for 25th in the NHL on the penalty kill (76.3 percent) and 25th in goals allowed per game (3.34) last season, so another defensive-minded defenseman with size could help solidify special teams and defensive-zone play.

They said it

"I think we've taken the right steps in the offseason, adding Marino and Sergachev ... and all these guys that are coming in now ... they're going to help us with that nice balance of having some veteran players push the young guys and help guiding us." -- general manager Bill Armstrong

Fantasy focus

Despite injury concerns that limited Sergachev to 34 games last season, he still has a high individual fantasy ceiling when healthy. He had 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) during those 34 games for the Lightning and reached an NHL high in 2022-23 with 64 points (10 goals, 54 assists) in 79 games. He's the most valuable fantasy player on Utah's roster and can be considered a top 10 fantasy defenseman overall heading into this season. -- Anna Dua

{coyotes} Suns owner Mat Ishbia hoping to 'one day' bring NHL back to Arizona

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

While the NHL's future in Arizona may currently seem bleak, Mat Ishbia has provided a glimmer of hope that a franchise could eventually return to the desert.

Ishbia, the owner of the NBA's Phoenix Suns and WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, told Sportico in an interview that he would be interested in bringing an NHL team back to Arizona after the Coyotes were sold to Smith Entertainment Group, relocated to Utah and rebranded as the Utah Hockey Club.

"I'm definitely going to be part of the community, and if I can help bring hockey back, I'll look at that," said Ishbia. "It's definitely something I'm interested in. It's a four-sport town. I'm disappointed we don't have a hockey team, but I understand what happened, and we're going to try to fix that one day."

Previous owner Alex Meruelo retained the rights to the Coyotes' name, logo and trademark after the sale and was also granted a five-year window to build an arena and reactivate the Arizona franchise. However, he informed the league in June that he would be relinquishing those rights after his latest plans for a new location fell apart.

According to Sportico, Ishbia would not disclose if he has already been talking to the NHL, and the league did not respond to requests for comment.

"I'm disappointed we don't have a hockey team here. That's what I'll say," Ishbia added. "Phoenix is a four-sport town. Maybe five if you want to include soccer, but it's a four-sports town. Baseball, football, basketball and hockey. And I hope that one day we'll be able to get hockey back."

The Suns play in Footprint Arena, a 32-year-old building that recently underwent a $230-million renovation, and Ishbia's lease there extends to 2036. He has expressed, however, that a new arena is part of his long-term plan in Phoenix.

"We'll continue to make this one first-class, and when the time's right we'll make the next adjustment," he said.

{coyotes} Beaudoin has chance to 'change the culture' for Utah

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

SALT LAKE CITY -- Upon selecting Cole Beaudoin with the No. 24 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, Utah Hockey Club general manager Bill Armstrong didn't mince words when discussing the 18-year-old center prospect.

"His work ethic might change the culture of our organization," Armstrong said.

Utah felt so strongly about landing Beaudoin, it gave up a second- and third-round pick in this draft as well as a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche to move up and take him.

"When you see the right player at the right time, and you're like, we'll pay an extra price for the identity that he brings, I'm all in on that kid," Armstrong said. "He's going to push the pace, how hard we play, and how hard we work off the ice. He's going to help our culture."

Beaudoin, who signed an entry-level contract with Utah on Monday, sounds like a player who could live up to those expectations.

"I'm someone that's a hard-working, 200-foot centerman," he said. "I'm someone that will give everything I have no matter the situation. If that's in the gym, if that's in practice, if that's a game, I'm going to give it everything I have and help the team."

Considered one of the most athletic and physical prospects available in the draft at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Beaudoin was tied for second in scoring for Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League with 62 points (28 goals, 34 assists) in 67 games last season and had four points (two goals, two assists) in seven games to help Canada win the 2024 IIHF under-18 World Junior Championship.

In addition to his work ethic, Beaudoin has put the time in on and off the ice to be one of the most physical forwards to come out of this draft.

"It's been about five years now where I've really had the mindset of trying to get stronger, trying to get faster, wanting to not only get drafted, but make it to the NHL and have a long career," Beaudoin said. "I take a lot of time in the gym preparing, stretching, all those kinds of things so that when I'm on the ice, I'm able to go 100 percent every single shift that I can go."

Beaudoin will most likely head back to the OHL this season, but said he believes it will be sooner rather than later when he makes his NHL debut.

"I feel like with my game style and the way I play, I feel I'm going to try to get it as early as possible," Beaudoin said. "I'm going to go into training camp and try to make it that year. If not, then I go back to my club team, have a good year, and go into the next year trying to make the team right then and there. I'm going to do whatever I can to do that."

Utah Hockey Club has locked up another of their 2024 first-round picks.

The team announced that it signed centre Cole Beaudoin to an entry-level contract on Monday.

The 18-year-old was selected with the 24th overall pick of this year's draft out of the OHL's Barrie Colts. With the Colts last season, Beaudoin had 28 goals and 62 points in 27 games, adding two goals and five points in six playoff games.

He played alongside fellow Utah first-rounder Tij Iginla at the under-18 World Juniors, where he potted two goals and four points in seven games for Canada.

{coyotes} Canada announces roster for 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase

Beckett Sennecke, Cayden Lindstrom and Tij Iginla, three of the top six picks at the 2024 NHL Draft, will be among the 42 players who will play for Canada at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase.

The camp will be held at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan from July 26-Aug. 3, and include practices and games against prospects from the United States, Sweden and Finland. The event will help teams begin their evaluations for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa from Dec. 26-Jan. 5, 2025.

Sennecke (6-foot-2, 177 pounds) was selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the No. 3 pick. The 18-year-old forward had 68 points (27 goals, 41 assists) in 63 games for Oshawa of the Ontario Hockey League last season.

"When you look at a player like him, there's a lot of upside," Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said at the draft. "He already possesses a lot of elite skills. Now he just has to get in the gym and put some weight on."

Lindstrom was chosen by the Columbus Blue Jackets with the No. 4 pick. The 18-year-old forward was named the best professional prospect in the Canadian Hockey League last season despite missing the second half because of a back injury. He had 46 points (27 goals, 19 assists) in 32 games.

"He plays a very hard [game]," Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said at the draft. "That skill set with that kind of temperament, it's hard to go past those guys."

Iginla (No. 6) was the first player selected by the Utah Hockey Club. The 17-year-old forward tied for sixth in the Western Hockey League with 47 goals in 64 games for Kelowna last season.

"I think the thing that stood out was the work ethic, high motor and then just the willingness to play on the inside, which is critical in the NHL," Utah director of player development Lee Stempniak said during development camp earlier this month. "That's where the goals are scored and [he has] that willingness, which is great to see."

Utah's second 2024 first-round pick, forward Cole Beaudoin (No. 24), will be at camp, along with five other players picked in the first round, defensemen Carter Yakemchuk (No. 7, Ottawa Senators), Zayne Parekh (No. 9, Calgary Flames) and Sam Dickinson (No. 11, San Jose Sharks), and forwards Berkly Catton (No. 8, Seattle Kraken) and Jett Luchanko (No. 13, Philadelphia Flyers).

Also attending are six players from Canada's team that finished fifth at the 2024 WJC: goalie Scott Ratzlaff (Buffalo Sabres), defenseman Oliver Bonk (Philadelphia Flyers), and forwards Easton Cowan (Toronto Maple Leafs), Carson Rehkopf (Seattle Kraken), Matthew Wood (Nashville Predators), and Brayden Yager (Pittsburgh Penguins).

Forward Macklin Celebrini (San Jose Sharks), the No. 1 pick of the 2024 draft who led Canada at the 2024 WJC with eight points (four goals, four assists) in five games, was invited but will not attend.

Canada's roster also includes four players eligible for the 2025 NHL Draft, including Mississauga (OHL) forward Porter Martone and Erie (OHL) forward Malcolm Spence, each of whom is projected to be a first-round pick.

The United States, which won the 2024 WJC, announced it's 46-player roster for the World Junior Summer Showcase on June 20.

{coyotes} Report: Alex Meruelo officially relinquishes rights to Coyotes

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Alex Meruelo era is officially over.

According to a report by PHNX Sports' Craig Morgan on Wednesday, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed that the former Arizona Coyotes owner has relinquished his rights to the franchise.

In late June, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that Meruelo informed the team that he would no longer be pursuing a reactivation of the Coyotes after the hockey operations move to Utah.

Meruelo made the decision to stop looking for another arena option after another bid for a new location fell apart.

"Alex took over a franchise that had a number of challenges that he had nothing to do with creating," Bettman said at the NHL's Board of Governors meetings of Meruelo's decision to walk away. "He invested a lot of himself and a lot of money in trying to turn things around, but I don't think the stars aligned. And that franchise, well before he took over, had issues relative to an appropriate place to play."

After Meruelo sold the team to Smith Entertainment Group in April, he retained the rights to the Coyotes' name, logo and trademark. He was also granted a five-year window to build an arena and reactivate the Arizona franchise.

The reactivation of the franchise would have required Meruelo to pay back the $1 billion that he received when he sold the team.

As for the future of hockey in the desert, Bettman said at the NHL's Board of Governors meetings it is not something the NHL is focused on.

{coyotes} Iginla signs entry-level contract, 1st draft pick in Utah history

Tij Iginla UTAH

Tij Iginla, the No. 6 pick of the 2024 NHL Draft and the first player to be selected by the Utah Hockey Club, signed a three-year, entry-level contact Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"It was really cool to hear a big cheer when my name was called," Iginla said Tuesday during Utah development camp. "I think the fans have been so welcoming to the hockey club and to me as well. It looks like we're going to have some of the best fans in the League down the road and it should be a lot of fun."

The 17-year-old forward was tied for sixth in the Western Hockey League last season with 47 goals in 64 games for Kelowna, and had 12 points (six goals, six assists) in seven games for Canada at the 2024 IIHF World Under-18 Championship to help them win a gold medal.

"I told him when I met with him, I said, 'We've got a lot of 20-goal-scorers on our roster, we're looking for a 50-goal scorer. No pressure,'" Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said June 28. "We really love him, not only as a person but as a player. He has everything that we like."

Iginla is the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, and said a lot of his offseason will be continuing to work with his father on improving his game.

"He's been huge for my development," Tij said Tuesday. "It'll be good to get back home and keep working on all parts of my game with him, and then I got my brother and sister, so we get out on the ice lots and just kind of work on whatever we got for the day.

"The focus is to just keep improving in all parts of my game. Just have a big summer and go into next season, whatever it is, and just keep trying to improve my game as much as I can."

Iginla likely will spend at least one more season with Kelowna, where he is expected to be a full-time center after splitting last season between center and left wing.

But the Utah player development staff already has been impressed.

"I think the thing that stood out was the work ethic, high motor, and then just the willingness to play on the inside, which is critical in the NHL," Utah director of player development Lee Stempniak said. "That's where the goals are scored, and [he has] that willingness, which is great to see."

SALT LAKE CITY -- When Tij Iginla was introduced to the crowd during the Utah Hockey Club's development camp scrimmage Friday, he was greeted with the loudest applause of anyone on the roster.

"It was really cool to hear a big cheer when my name was called," said the 17-year-old center, selected by Utah with the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. "I think the fans have been so welcoming to the hockey club and to me as well. It looks like we're going to have some of the best fans in the League down the road and it should be a lot of fun."

Though his NHL debut has yet to be determined, the son of Calgary Flames icon and Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla already has made big waves in Utah.

"He's an unbelievable kid, he's a hockey player inside and out," Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said. "We really loved him not only as a person but as a player, he has everything that we like."

Iginla is coming off a breakout season with Kelowna of the Western Hockey League; he was second on the team with 84 points (47 goals, 37 assists) in 64 games and led the club in goals following a trade from Seattle on June 8, 2023. He also had 12 points (six goals, six assists) in seven games to help Canada win the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship.

"I think the thing that stood out was the work ethic, high motor, and then just the willingness to play on the inside, which is critical in the NHL," Utah director of player development Lee Stempniak said. "That's where the goals are scored, and [he has] that willingness, which is great to see."

Utah sees Iginla as a potential top-six forward when he develops into an NHL player, and someone who can score at a high clip.

"I said to him, we have a lot of 20-goal scorers. We need a 50-goal scorer," Armstrong said. "He's got a chance to kind of push the pace and score some goals for us. I love his mindset."

Aside from his father's decorated career, Iginla's older sister, Jade, led Brown University women's team in scoring last season as a sophomore forward with 27 points (16 goals, 11 assists) in 32 games, and his younger brother, Joe, played five games as a 15-year-old forward with Edmonton of the WHL last season.

Tij Iginla said his connection to his family is paramount to his development moving forward.

"He's been huge for my development," he said about his father. "It'll be good to get back home and keep working on all parts of my game with him, and then I got my brother and sister, so we get out on the ice lots and just kind of work on whatever we got for the day."

"The focus is to just keep improving in all parts of my game. Just have a big summer and go into next season, whatever it is, and just keep trying to improve my game as much as I can."

Barrett Hayton signed a two-year, $5.3 million contract with the Utah Hockey Club on Monday. It has an average annual value of $2.65 million.

The 24-year-old forward, who was a restricted free agent, had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 33 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season.

"We are very pleased to sign Barrett to an extension," Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said. "Barrett is a reliable two-way center who is strong in the face-off circle, and he is a great complement down the middle to our high-skilled forwards. We look forward to having him back with our organization."

Selected by Arizona with the No. 5 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, Hayton has 84 points (35 goals, 49 assists) in 209 games. He set NHL career highs in goals (19), assists (24) and points (43) in 82 games in 2022-23.

{coyotes} Sergachev ready for ‘big opportunity’ with Utah Hockey Club

--

SALT LAKE CITY -- Mikhail Sergachev was taking out the trash when he found he was being traded to Utah.

"At first, I was in shock. I didn't expect it," the defenseman said Friday of his reaction to being sent to the Utah Hockey Club on June 29 in exchange for defenseman J.J. Moser, forward Conor Geekie, a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

The former Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman knew nothing about Utah before the trade, but speaking to the media for the first time since the deal took place, it didn't take long for him to see the potential of what can happen with his new team.

"Talking to my agent, talking to some players, and talking to [Clayton] Keller, everybody said great things about Utah and the new franchise. It's pretty amazing, honestly. The whole setup, the city. I'm very excited. It's a big opportunity for me to prove myself, being a leader. I'm looking forward to it."

The 26-year-old had 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 34 regular-season games for the Lightning in 2023-24 but missed most of the year because of a knee injury. He returned in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and had one assist in two games.

Despite the lost time on the ice, he comes into the new season as Utah's top defenseman.

"We are in a situation where we want a proven player," said Utah head coach Andre Tourigny on Friday. "Sergey is exactly that kind of player. He's been in championship games, been in pressure games. He was one of those guys who was on the ice in those big moments… We still have a young group of defensemen. He will bring experience. We're making a step in the right direction."

When the 2023-24 season concluded, Utah general manager Bill Armstrong had to rebuild his defensive lineup from scratch. When the possibility of a trade for Sergachev came up during the draft, the team took its shot.

"I just thought to myself, as an organization, when do you get a chance?" Armstrong said. "It's a great chance to add a number one [defenseman] to your roster at 26 years old that's won two championships… That opportunity doesn't come around and we jumped on it."

Sergachev had 257 points (48 goals, 209 assists) in 475 regular-season games, and 34 points (nine goals, 25 assists) in 100 career playoff games over seven seasons in Tampa Bay. He won the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021 as a top-four defenseman with the Lightning.

In addition to his offensive ability on the blue line, he brings a physical presence to Utah's defense.

"Obviously I love hitting, but you try to be smart about that when you play 25, 27, or 23 minutes," Sergachev said. "I'm just going to use my legs, use my speed, and when I need to, I'm going to lay a hit. But for me, it's not all about that. It's about being aggressive everywhere, not just on defense, but on offense, too."

Sergachev will also step into a leadership role with Utah, which will head into the 2024-25 season as one of the youngest rosters in the NHL.

"I don't really like speaking a lot. I kind of follow the leaders that I had before, like [Steven Stamkos] and [Victor Hedman]," Sergachev said. "Most of the time they just play, they go out there and show by their example what they can do, and that speaks for itself. I feel like I'm going to do the same, and I'm just going to focus on that. Playing the right way and try to win as many games as possible."
