Could Mackenzie Weegar be headed to Salt Lake City?

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger confirms the Calgary Flames are in trade talks with the Utah Mammoth over the veteran defenceman.

Dreger cautions that the deal is not done and also notes that Mammoth prospect Tij Iginla, son of Flames icon Jarome Iginla, is not part of any discussions.

Weegar, 32, has three goals and 20 points in 60 games with the Flames this season while averaging 23:07 of ice time.

He was acquired from the Florida Panthers, along with forwards Cole Schwindt, and Jonathan Huberdeau, and a draft pick in July of 2022 in exchange for star winger Matthew Tkachuk.

The 6-foot, right-shot defenceman is in the third season of an eight-year, $50 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $6.25 million. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2030-31 campaign.

Drafted 206th overall by the Panthers in 2013, Weegar has 62 goals and 271 points in 610 career games split between the Panthers and Flames.

The Ottawa native represented Canada twice at the World Hockey Championships, in 2023 and 2025. He was named the tournament's best defenceman in 2023 after recording three goals and 11 points en route to a gold-medal finish.

A 19-year-old centre from Kelowna, BC, Iginla was the sixth overall pick of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He has 36 goals and 35 assists this season for his hometown Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.
