{coyotes} Gibson stops 41 shots, Ducks beat Coyotes 1-0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Anaheim gave up plenty of scoring chances, probably too many. The Ducks took a penalty with two minutes left, another with a minute left, and faced a 6-on-3 when Arizona pulled its goalie.

John Gibson didn't let anything through and now the Ducks are 2-0 to start the season despite missing a string of key players.

Gibson stopped 41 shots, rookie Max Comtois scored for the second straight game to open his NHL career and the Ducks beat the Coyotes 1-0 on Saturday night.

''When you get to the end of the game, it's about sacrifice and doing the little things,'' Gibson said. ''We really did that.''

The Ducks and Coyotes played a tight game until Comtois scored in the closing seconds of the second period. He had a goal 49 seconds into Anaheim's season-opening win over San Jose.

The Coyotes had plenty of chances after that and picked up the pressure in the third period.

With 2:01 left, Anaheim's Jakob Silfverberg was sent off for delay of game after sending a puck over the glass from his own end. Carter Rowney then was called for high-sticking with a minute left and the Coyotes pulled goalie Antti Raanta with about 30 seconds left.

Nothing got through.

The Coyotes rushed some shots and Gibson stopped the ones that did get to him, closing out his 17th career shutout.

Arizona was shut out in consecutive games to open a season for the first time in 39 years as a franchise after opening with a 3-0 loss to Dallas.

''It's a hard league to score and I thought we left some opportunities out there,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''And I thought we got a little antsy on that 5-on-3 instead of sticking to what we did in practice. We've got to score in that situation.''

The Ducks opened the season without injured forwards Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler, Ondrej Kase and Patrick Eaves. They still had plenty of offensive production in their opener, knocking off San Jose 5-2 behind three-point nights by Jakob Silfverberg and Richard Rakell.

Gibson was sharp against the Coyotes, turning away a couple of good chances in the first two periods.

Raanta stopped a pair of breakaways the first two periods, but was unable to come up with the stop on a mini breakaway by Comtois, who got behind Ilya Lyubushkin with 31 second left in the second.

''It's one goal and you have to make that save,'' said Raanta, who had 19 saves. ''It's tough to take, but keep working and believe that it's coming.''

The Coyotes picked up the pressure to open the third, but Gibson kept turning them away, including Richard Panik's quick wraparound attempt and later during the wild flurry at the end.

''You don't have too many 6-on-3s,'' Ducks center Adam Henrique said. ''We got a couple good bounces, put a little pressure on it and obviously Gibby making a couple big saves was key for us.''

Notes: A moment of silence was held before the game for Sen. John McCain, a huge Coyotes fan who died this year. ... The Coyotes are 14-6-0-2 in home openers since moving from Winnipeg to Arizona in 1996. ... The Ducks are 4-1-0 the past two seasons against Arizona. ... Silfverberg had his fourth assist of the season on Comtois' goal.

{coyotes} Oct. 7: Lightning win NHL debut

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Oct. 7

1992: The brand-new Tampa Bay Lightning put on a show for their fans in their NHL debut.

Forward Chris Kontos scores four goals (his first career NHL hat trick), and defenseman Joe Reekie has four assists to help the Lightning to a 7-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Expo Hall. Kontos scores the first two goals in Lightning history before the game is six minutes old, then beats goalie Ed Belfour twice more in the second period. The four goals remain a single-game Lightning record (Martin St. Louis tied it against the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 18, 2014).

It's the highlight of a debut season that ends 23-54-7.

MORE MOMENTS

1954: The Detroit Red Wings extend their unbeaten streak on opening night to 15 games (14-0-1) by defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 at Olympia Stadium.

1972: The New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames face off at Nassau Coliseum in the first game for each of the NHL's two newest franchises. The Flames win 3-2 on third-period goals by Bobby Leiter and Rey Comeau. Ed Westfall scores the first goal in Islanders history after Morris Stefaniw gets the first one for the Flames. It's the only goal of Stefaniw's NHL career.

1976: Seventeen years to the day that he scores his first NHL goal, Blackhawks center Stan Mikita becomes the third player in League history to reach 1,300 career points. The milestone comes when he scores a goal in Chicago's 6-4 road win against the St. Louis Blues.

1983: The Vancouver Canucks defeat the Minnesota North Stars 10-9 at Pacific Coliseum in one of the wildest games in NHL history. The teams combined for 10 power-play goals (six by the Canucks, four by the North Stars) before an unassisted goal by Vancouver's Patrik Sundstrom with 4:56 remaining breaks a 9-9 tie.

1986: The Red Wings name 21-year-old center Steve Yzerman as their new captain, the youngest in their history. Yzerman remains captain until his retirement in July 2006.

1995: Cam Neely of the Boston Bruins becomes the first player in NHL history to have a hat trick on opening night twice in his career. Neely scores once in each period in a 4-4 tie against the visiting Islanders at Boston Garden. He also had a hat trick on Jan. 22, 1995, when the Bruins opened the shortened 1994-95 season with a 4-1 win against the Philadelphia Flyers.

1996: Mike Gartner scores three times for his 18th NHL hat trick and the Phoenix Coyotes, playing in their second game since relocating from Winnipeg, defeat the Bruins 5-2 at Fleet Center. Gartner's goal at 7:11 of the first period is the first for Phoenix and comes one night after a 1-0 loss at the Hartford Whalers.

Mike Gartner #22 of the Phoenix Coyotes

2017: The Vegas Golden Knights become the first NHL expansion team in 50 years to win its first two games when James Neal's goal at 3:46 of overtime given them a 2-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena. The Golden Knights trail 1-0 until defenseman Nate Schmidt ties the game with 1:12 remaining in the third period. Neal scores his third goal in two nights when he skates out in front from behind the net after taking a pass from David Perron and beats Antti Raanta for the win. The Golden Knights join the 1967-68 Oakland Seals and Los Angeles Kings as the only expansion teams to start 2-0-0.

On the same night, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals becomes the first NHL player in 100 years to have hat tricks in each of his team's first two games of the season. Ovechkin scores four goals, three in the first period, in a 6-1 win against the Canadiens at Capital One Arena. He becomes the first player with back-to-back hat tricks at the start of an NHL season since 1917-18. Capitals rookie forward Nathan Walker becomes the first Australian national to play in an NHL regular-season game and scores a goal at 18:05 of the second period.

{coyotes} Coyotes' Keller hoping to build on stellar rookie season

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Clayton Keller had a superb start and finish to his rookie season with the Arizona Coyotes, becoming a finalist for the Calder Trophy. In between, he went through a long scoring drought.

Keller's goal for his sophomore season: More consistency.

Already one of the NHL's top young players, Keller is hoping to take the next step in his career by mirroring the preparation of players like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Patrick Kane - with an assist from his coach, Rick Tocchet.

''You try to watch guys like that and see how they create success,'' Keller said. ''Toc's a good friend of Crosby's and he's always bringing drills that Crosby does, little things before practice to help us. It's good to have that relationship with Toc to be able to ask questions about this player or that player.''

Arizona used the seventh overall pick of the 2016 NHL draft to select Keller out of Boston University. The 2016 draft was headlined by Auston Matthews, who immediately became one of the NHL's biggest stars with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and high-scoring Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine.

Keller may have been a steal at No. 7, if that's even possible.

Though small at 5-foor-10, 170 pounds, Keller is quick, shifty and sees the ice well. He got his rookie season off to a great start, scoring in his first NHL game and piling up 11 goals in Arizona's first 16 games. Keller was the Coyotes leader in goals and points at the end of 2017.

Once the calendar flipped, Keller's production dropped off. He had three goals and 12 points through the first two months of 2018, appearing to hit the rookie wall.

But Keller found his form again late in the season, finishing with 23 goals and 38 assists to break Arizona's rookie records.

''Any NHL player - the guy is turning 20 years old - consistency is key,'' Tocchet said. ''I'm not saying he's inconsistent, but the great ones have a bad night and usually the next night they bounce back. That's one of the things he's probably going to learn.''

Tocchet has tried to help Keller gain consistency by sharing some of the things he learned from Mario Lemieux and Crosby.

Tocchet won a Stanley Cup while playing with Lemieux and was on the bench when Crosby led the Penguins to two titles. Both were skilled players, but also had the work ethic to become the best in their sport.

''I was very lucky to be around some of the best players in the world,'' Tocchet said. ''I played with Mario Lemieux, coached Sidney Crosby and there's a reason why they're the best. They work hard. They do what it takes.''

Keller doesn't lack the work ethic. He usually shows up early for practice to work on his game and is what Tocchet calls a ''hockey nerd'' who is always watching the game, tons of film, asking questions.

Keller expects to get more attention from opponents this season and to get banged around a little more as teams try to slow him down. He spent the summer adding strength and muscle while implementing some of the drills culled from Crosby.

''I feel really good. I feel a lot stronger,'' Keller said. ''It should help me through this full 82 and be ready for every game.''

{coyotes} Stars control Coyotes 3-0 in Montgomery's NHL coaching debut

DALLAS (AP) Jim Montgomery didn't pause very long to savor a win in his NHL coaching debut.

The Dallas Stars coach isn't even sure it counts.

''First of all, players win games,'' Montgomery said after Devin Shore, Alexander Radulov and John Klingberg scored less than two minutes apart in the second period of a 3-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.

''I don't know why coaches have records. I really think players win championships, and I've always believed that. I think coaches help give them opportunities to do that.''

Ben Bishop stopped all 30 shots for his first season-opening shutout and the 25th of his career. Bishop has a four-game winning streak on opening night.

Shore broke a scoreless tie by putting in a rebound as he was going to his knees. Radulov beat backtracking former Dallas defenseman Alex Goligoski one-on-one in a battle for the puck as they skated up the ice and slipped it between Antii Raanta's pads 27 seconds later.

A little more than a minute after that, Klingberg skated alone up the right side in 4-on-4 and beat Raanta inside the far post.

''A couple of big `yeahs' by me behind the bench on every one of them,'' Montgomery said. ''So, it was a great flurry by us.''

Defenseman Connor Carrick, acquired in a trade with Toronto three days before the opener, assisted on the first two goals.

Jamie Benn also had two assists in the Stars' eighth straight win over the Coyotes - all in regulation by a combined score of 30-13. It was Dallas' 11th consecutive home win over Arizona, a streak dating to February 2012.

The Coyotes - who opened last season with 10 straight losses, nine in regulation - hit the post twice when the game was scoreless.

Clayton Keller did it in the first period, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson in the second less than a minute before Shore's goal sparked the Dallas flurry.

''We hit the post, and then ...,'' second-year coach Rick Tocchet said. ''It's the first game of the year, but it's something you can't let happen. We have to play quicker and initiate.''

Montgomery, who played his final game with Dallas in 2002, was making his debut less than two years after winning an NCAA championship at Denver. He is one of three current NHL coaches who made the jump from college.

General manager Jim Nill chose Montgomery as the club's third coach in three seasons after one year under Ken Hitchcock, who led the Stars to their only Stanley Cup title in 1999 but missed the playoffs in his return 15 years after he was fired.

''It's nice to not have to make him wait for it,'' Bishop said of Montgomery's first win. ''There's a lot of firsts in here tonight. Monty's obviously one of them. Hopefully we can get him a lot more.''

Missing several injured forwards they figure to count on for scoring, the Coyotes outshot the Stars 30-25 but didn't generate many good chances in the final period. Raanta stopped 22 shots.

''It's a new season. It feels way different,'' Goligoski said. ''Every year there's new faces in here. I don't think (last year's start) is on anyone's mind.''

Bishop finished a season-opening shutout after getting injured when he was working on one in his Dallas debut last season. He had stopped all 19 shots for a 1-0 lead over Vegas when Bishop took a puck to the mask early in the third period and left the game. The Golden Knights rallied for a 2-1 win.

''Can't start thinking I'm feeling good because that's like the worst thing you could probably think to yourself,'' Bishop said. ''Did a good job of clearing the front when there was a couple of ones that squeaked by.''

NOTES: Stars D Stephen Jones started the season on injured reserve. He was dealing with headaches during the preseason. He says they might be related to concussions sustained last season. ... Coyotes D Jordan Oesterle went to the locker room in the second period after a hard check from Tyler Pitlick but returned to the game. ... Stars F Tyler Seguin was scoreless in his first game since signing a $78.8 million, eight-year contract extension.

{coyotes} Vrbata retires from hockey after 16 NHL seasons

Radim Vrbata retired from professional hockey after 16 NHL seasons Monday.

The 37-year-old forward had 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 42 games with the Florida Panthers last season.

Selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the seventh round (No. 212) of the 1999 NHL Draft, Vrbata had 623 points (284 goals, 339 assists) in 1,057 games with the Panthers, Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vancouver Canucks.

"I want to thank the fans and all seven organizations that I played for ... and all the management and coaches who took a chance on me and gave me the opportunity to play in the NHL for 16 years," Vrbata said in a statement issued by his agent. "I consider myself extremely fortunate to have played over 1,000 NHL games and I am very grateful to have been part of the NHL for so long."

Vrbata scored at least 20 goals in a season six times, including an NHL career high 35 with the Coyotes in 2011-12, and played in the 2015 NHL All-Star Game. He's third among players drafted in 1999 with 284 goals, behind Daniel Sedin (393) and Henrik Zetterberg (337), and fourth in games played and points.
