{coyotes} Sharks top Coyotes in shootout

Stanley Cup Classics - NHL Stanley Cup

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Logan Couture and Patrick Marleau scored in the shootout and the San Jose Sharks snapped a five-game losing streak on the road with a 4-3 win against the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday night.

San Jose goalie Antti Niemi made 34 saves in regulation and overtime and two more in the shootout, stopping Radim Vrbata and Oliver Ekman-Larsson after Mikkel Boedker opened the shootout with a goal.

Phoenix fell to 1-3-2 at home following a 9-0-2 start.

The game was played on the 10th birthday of Jobing.com Arena. The Coyotes lost 3-1 to the Nashville Predators on Dec. 27, 2003.

David Moss had two goals, his fourth and fifth of the season, and Vrbata added his 11th for Phoenix. The Coyotes were outshot 101-53 in two meetings against the Sharks in San Jose this season. They held a 37-31 edge in shots this time, but couldn't hold a pair of leads in regulation. Mike Smith made 28 saves for the Coyotes.

Red-hot Joe Pavelski, Marleau and Brent Burns matched those goals for the Sharks, who have collected five of six possible points in three games against Phoenix.

Phoenix had scored only one goal in four of its past five games and lost all of them (0-2-2). But the Coyotes got an offensive boost early against the Sharks.

Moss ran down and intercepted a week outlet pass from San Jose's Matt Nieto. He whirled and, in one motion, put a wrist shot over Niemi's glove at 7:43 of the opening period. San Jose outshot Phoenix 12-11 in the period, but the Coyotes had the better scoring chances and left with the lead.

The Sharks started the second period with a penalty kill and a great scoring chance. Smith got a lot of Justin Braun shot between the circles but the rebound fell off him and ticked off the near post. Marleau got a swat at the rebound and sent it along the goal line and off the far post, allowing the Coyotes to keep their lead.

But the Sharks kept up the pressure, and Pavelski got them even at 9:56.

Burns held in an Ekman-Larsson clearing attempt and teammate Joe Thornton set up Pavelski for a shot from the left circle that picked the far corner over Smith's glove. Pavelski has goals in three straight games and seven in the past eight to give him 16 for the season.

Moss put Phoenix ahead again at 11:04, deflecting a wobbly David Schlemko shot from the point and skipping it by Niemi. Moss had two goals in two periods after scoring three in the first 36 games of the season, but the lead didn't last long.

Derek Morris put Phoenix on the penalty kill four seconds after Moss' goal and the Shark capitalized. Tommy Wingels carried the puck into the Phoenix zone and found Marleau between two Coyotes in the slot. Marleau whipped the puck between Smith's pads with five seconds left in the power play at 13:13 for his team-best 17th goal to tie the game after two.

The Sharks took their first lead at 10:10 of the third period when Pavelski grabbed a Phoenix turnover behind the net and threaded a pass to the slot. Burns put Phoenix's Antoine Vermette on his back and lifted the puck over Smith for his 11th goal to make it 3-2.

But with Wingels in the box for interference, the Coyotes got a power-play goal of their own. Ribeiro found Vrbata in the left circle and he picked the right corner over Niemi's glove with 6:25 remaining to tie the game for a third time.

Thanks to those club members who participated in the search

It is estimated that as many as 70 people came out to form up and search for thirteen year old Jophrey of Mesa AZ.  The Mesa ARC successfully provided communications and net control for this rapidly assembled and mostly untrained search team of amateur volunteers.

Members of the Superstition Search and Rescue participated in the search and will follow up on leads discovered.  The Mesa ARC remains on call for communications if necessary.

Although we meet and work in the field several times a year, in the event that we are needed, this is the first time the Club has been activated for an emergency and I am very proud of our members for the professionalism they exhibited both in the field and on the air.

Breaking Bad, The Final Season - Breaking Bad

SHARKS (23-8-6) at COYOTES (19-10-7)

TV: CSN-CA, KTVK

Last 10: San Jose 4-5-1; Phoenix 4-3-3

Season series: This is the third of four games. The teams have split their first two games, with the Phoenix Coyotes winning 3-2 in a shootout against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center in the most recent game Nov. 2. The teams will not play again until April 12, which marks the final game this season for San Jose.

Big story: The Coyotes are in fifth place in the Pacific Division with 45 points, seven behind third-place San Jose. The teams have been heading in opposite directions since the middle of the month, with the Sharks 3-1-0 and Phoenix 1-1-2 since Dec. 17.

Team Scope:

Sharks: San Jose has won four of six games following a slump that saw it drop four straight in early December, but is dealing with the news that rookie forward Tomas Hertl will miss more than a month due to a right-knee injury that will require surgery. Hertl, who leads all rookies with 15 goals and 25 points, sustained the injury on a knee-on-knee collision with Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown last Thursday.

San Jose has won both games it's played without Hertl in shootouts, 3-2 against Dallas on Saturday and 5-4 against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

Coach Todd McLellan will experiment with different line combinations in Hertl's absence.

"We'll shuffle people around over the next little bit until we find comfortable combinations again," he said before the Colorado game. "We're still not at where we need to be and where we were, so despite beating Dallas and coming from behind, we still have work to do and we're trying to find the right way of getting it done."

Coyotes: Phoenix is 10-3-2 at Jobing.com Arena, where they'll play seven of their next eight. The return to home ice might help the Coyotes rediscover their scoring touch; they have scored 53 goals in 15 home games (3.53 per game) compared to 54 goals in 21 road games (2.57).

A 2-1 overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Monday dropped the Coyotes to 2-2-2 over their past six games. They scored 14 goals in the six games, with six of those coming in a 6-3 win against the New York Islanders on Dec. 12.

Goalie Mike Smith, who made 48 saves in the Nov. 2 shootout win against San Jose, was embarrassed by his team's performance against the Sabres, who dressed 18 players after the flu hit the team.

"That was embarrassing as far as I'm concerned," he said. "You go on a Christmas break, you have three days off, and you come out like that? I think that's a bunch of garbage as far as far as I'm concerned."

Who's hot: Sharks center Joe Pavelski has three goals his past four games, including the game-tying goal against Colorado with 20 seconds left in regulation. Center Joe Thornton, who leads the NHL with 35 assists, has six assists his past five games. … Coyotes forward Antoine Vermette scored a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime, against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. He has 12 goals. Smith is 1-2-2 his past five games despite a .937 save percentage.

Injury report: In addition to Hertl, San Jose will be without forwards Adam Burish (lower body) and Raffi Torres (knee), who are on injured reserve. … Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek (hip) and forward Shane Doan (illness) are on IR.

{coyotes} Strange goal by Pysyk gives Sabres OT victory

Merry Christmas, Baby - Rod Stewart

BUFFALO -- Mark Pysyk's first goal of the season at 3:47 of overtime gave the Buffalo Sabres a 2-1 win against the Phoenix Coyotes at First Niagara Center on Monday.

Pysyk, who was recalled from the American Hockey League on Monday afternoon, was credited with the game-winning goal when Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal knocked a loose puck out of the air and into goalie Mike Smith's hockey pants.

Smith slid backward into the net to prevent a rebound opportunity not knowing the puck was in his equipment. A review of the play confirmed the puck crossed the line.

Sabres forward Tyler Ennis tied the game with 5:59 remaining in the third period. Ennis got a pass from Zemgus Girgensons after he stole it from Coyotes defenseman Michael Stone and broke in on Smith. Ennis deked and put the puck past Smith for his eighth goal of the season.

The Coyotes led 1-0 on a goal by Hanzal early in the second period. He deflected a point shot from defenseman Connor Murphy past Sabres goalie Ryan Miller at 19 seconds. The play was reviewed to see if Hanzal tipped it with a high stick, but the call on the ice stood. It was Hanzal's 10th goal of the season.

The Sabres lost forward Drew Stafford at 11:16 of the second period when he was given a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct. Stafford hit Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson on a play in the corner. Ekman-Larsson was pursuing the puck when Stafford swung his elbow back and caught Ekman-Larsson in the face and put him down on the ice. Ekman-Larsson wasn't injured and remained in the game.

The Sabres were shorthanded to start the game. They dressed 18 players (16 skaters, two goalies) because of a flu outbreak; four of the five scratches involved players out with illness. It was the first time since Jan. 7, 1981 they've skated with that few players.

Miller made 36 saves; Smith stopped 30.

The teams return to action on Friday. The Sabres go on the road to play the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Coyotes head home to play the San Jose Sharks.

COYOTES (19-10-6) at SABRES (9-24-3)

TV: FS-A PLUS, MSG-B, BELL TV

Last 10: Phoenix 4-4-2; Buffalo 4-4-2

Season series: This is the first of two games between the Phoenix Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres. They face off for the first time since Nov. 19, 2011, when Mike Smith stopped 43 shots, Radim Vrbata scored a pair of goals and Paul Bissonnette had the game-winner as Phoenix won 4-2 in Buffalo.

Big story: Currently the No. 9 seed in the Western Conference, the Coyotes are after an important two points Monday and can't afford to overlook a Sabres team that despite having the fewest points in the NHL has made strides of late and won consecutive games before dropping the back end of a home-and-home Saturday to the Boston Bruins.

Team Scope:

Coyotes: This is the finale of a four-game road trip for Phoenix, which snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a come-from-behind 4-3 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators. The Coyotes had scored just a single goal in each of those defeats, but found an offensive spark in the form of Antoine Vermette.

The veteran forward, a longtime Senator, recorded a hat trick as the Coyotes erased a two-goal deficit. Vermette's power-play goal with 2:13 left in regulation knotted the score and he struck again at 2:23 of the extra period. Vrbata also scored and Smith made 37 saves.

"When you're in a little bit of a slide it's a character win when you're down," defenseman Keith Yandle said. "Everyone did a good job getting into it and trying to get the win. There was a lot of desperation in the third when we were trying to find ourselves a goal and get back into the game. When it's crunch time it amps up a little bit but it's fun."

Sabres: Not only did Buffalo's 4-2 win against Boston at First Niagara Center on Thursday give the Sabres consecutive victories for only the second time this season, it was a huge statement knocking off the top team in the Atlantic Division.

Going for the sweep Saturday in Boston and a three-game winning streak, the Sabres were undone by an inability to convert on six power-play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 for 1:49 midway through the second period and another two-man advantage in the third negated by a Buffalo penalty.

"It's disappointing," forward Ville Leino told the Buffalo News, "because we've been playing so good and we didn't give our best."

Who's hot: Mikkel Boedker has three goals and three assists in the past six games for the Coyotes. … Matt Moulson has two goals and one assist in the past four games for the Sabres.

Injury report: Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek (lower body) and forward Shane Doan (illness) are on injured reserve. … Buffalo forward Cody Hodgson (upper body) is day-to-day. Forward Cody McCormick (upper body) is on injured reserve.
