{coyotes} Coyotes plan open competition for top lines

Ultimate Rock Ballads

This summer, after the Phoenix Coyotes missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2009, general manager Don Maloney said his two main priorities were to sign coach Dave Tippett and goaltender Mike Smith to contract extensions.

Maloney successfully did both, but that did little to bolster a Coyotes offense that finished 21st in the NHL and a power play that ranked last in the Western Conference last season.

Signing free-agent playmaking center Mike Ribeiro to a four-year, $22 million contract helped in that effort, but Maloney maintains the team still has holes on its top two lines. For now, the hope is that training camp will provide an open audition for those skilled spots. And whoever wins that competition could get a chance to star on a team looking to return to the postseason.

"We made a concerted effort to leave three open scoring spots available. Hopefully somebody will seize the opportunity and take it," Maloney told NHL.com. "I really feel we have the third and fourth line covered. Where do we find a little more skill? Where do we find help on our power play? Where do we find help in the shootout? We're not closing our minds to anything."

That means a number of Coyotes prospects could be called upon to fill those offensive holes. Maloney has a few young players in mind.

Like Lucas Lessio, who finished his Ontario Hockey League career last season with the Oshawa Generals and went on to total four points in eight regular-season and playoff games with the Coyotes' American Hockey League affiliate, the Portland Pirates. Or Chris Brown, who led all first-year AHL players last season with 29 goals. Or Henrik Samuelsson, the team's 2012 first-round pick and the son of former Coyotes assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson.

Even 18-year-old Max Domi, whom the Coyotes selected 12th in the 2013 NHL Draft, will get an opportunity to fill a forward spot.

"He has excellent speed and a creative mind. How can we not give him every opportunity to make the team?" Maloney said. "It's hard to play an 82-game season in the NHL at a young age. [We] need more skill in the top two lines and somebody who can make plays and bring some speed. Max has it all, other than the fact that he's still 18. We're not going to say no. Max will have every opportunity to make this club."

The need for an infusion of talent up front is no secret in the desert; the team's leading scorer last season was defenseman Keith Yandle, and four Phoenix forwards -- Radim Vrbata, Shane Doan, Mikkel Boedker and Martin Hanzal -- averaged more than half a point per game. What's more, there wasn't a single Coyotes forward ranked among the NHL's top 100 scorers last season.

Under Maloney's leadership, the Coyotes have managed to stockpile an intriguing collection of prospects. Now that the team appears done looking to add to its roster through free agency, it could be time for those prospects to step up and take advantage of their opportunity.

"I feel we're going to get a good push at training camp from a couple of younger players," Maloney said. "Whoever wants to step up, we like that push."

indeed...16 signals on the "bypass".  Once and only once I got through town without stopping!

You'll be happy to know that a "bypass of the bypass" is under construction.

That would be an insanely expensive repair/replacement job and neither
of these old birds is worth that expense anymore.  On top of that, I
don't know that the FAA would approve of it.

At nearly 93,000 hours - the Saudi bird is finished.

Chopping the tail off of a 747 as the first step in the scrapping
process is fairly common.  There of photos of other 747s around the
world that went through the same thing as the first step in their
scrapping process.

If they don't remove the tail first and start at the front, the
aircraft will rock back on the tail when the center of gravity shifts
(due to weight disappearing up front) and they would have to get it
back down to the ground (and keep it there) to safely continue the
process.  This is also the reason behind strapping the nose gear to
the ground (and the use of tail stands) when loading/unloading 747
freighters through the aft cargo door...  There are plenty of pictures
around the web of 747s sitting on their tails on cargo ramps around
the world due to someone screwing up.

Hope this helps.

{coyotes} NHL wants to further scale back size of goalie equipment

Europe-Flight/Hotel Combo

Of the many things to come out of the most recent Competition Committee's rules summit was the proposal to reduce the size of goalie pads by 10 percent, something recently agreed upon by the NHLPA. It didn't draw much attention behind some of the other changes such as the grandfather clause coming into effect for shields moving forward but it was relatively significant.

But it might not have been significant enough. Kevin Woodley of InGoal Mag says the NHL is interested in going even further.

That wasn't enough for the NHL, which in early June also asked that new measurement be enforced separately rather than continuing as one of part of the formula for each goalie's entire pad height. The NHL also originally asked for tighter restrictions on the width and contouring of kneepads, something the NHLPA planned to pass off to a Competition Committee sub-committee that is scheduled to meet for the first time over the next week to 10 days -- likely too late for the upcoming season.

According to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, after meeting last Thursday in New York the NHL Players' Association is still going to consider the additional goaltending equipment reduction requests for this season.

"We have the Players' Association commitment to going back to the goaltender group on kneepads and some of the other additions that Kay Whitmore has in mind to do," Daly said prior to taking part in a Town Hall-style event with Vancouver Canucks season ticket holders this week. "It is an ongoing process. We are going to get some movement this year with respect to goaltending equipment, but it's going to continue to be a work in progress."

What we're talking about here ends up being just a couple of inches here and there but when you add it all up it matters. Just consider how the puck seems to go through goaltenders at times as if it were bypassing them with osmosis, take away a few inches from the pads and the chances go up. It's all about scoring, specifically finding ways to get more of it.

The goalies will have concerns -- they say over injury which is certainly true but the cynic in me says it's also about protecting their numbers -- but the NHL seems to want to get this done. When you look at this picture of Corey Crawford that was making the rounds during the playoffs, perhaps you can understand why. Doesn't this just look a bit extreme? That's not to single out Crawford, others have extreme pads too, that's just an example.

{coyotes} Bettman: We must continue joint focus on safety

SwissOutpost.com

Amongst the bustle of dozens of staff, the confident struts of paddle-wielding NHL players, and the aged bricks of Toronto's Steam Whistle brewery stood someone few would have expected to see at the NHLPA's Smashfest: Commissioner Gary Bettman.

Only eight months ago the PA and the league were in the midst of their agonizingly prolonged labour dispute, but with a new 10-year labour deal in place, the time has come for both sides to begin working jointly on solving issues pertinent to the game. None of which are bigger than head trauma.

Although he wanted to downplay his appearance at an NHLPA event and did not stray too far from the VIP area, Bettman spoke to sportsnet.ca about the fundraiser's end goal.

"Player safety is of paramount importance," Bettman said. "We were the first sports league to have a working concussion study group with the players and the trainers. We were the first sports league to do baseline testing. We were the first sports league to have protocols for diagnosis and return to play decisions. We were the first sports league to have a department of player safety, and the list goes on and on."

Despite the rule changes instituted by the league since 2010, there remains doubt as to what has actually been accomplished. Most recently is a report by Dr. Cusamano, a neurosurgeon at Toronto's St. Michael's hospital, who claims that the number of concussions has in fact not decreased.

"I follow all the literature on the subject," Bettman said. "There has yet to be unanimity of agreement on what the state of medicine is, which is why we continue to spend tremendous time, money and effort to focus on this issue.

"This is a work in progress because the medicine continues to evolve."

Organized by Dominic Moore, Smashfest is a charity ping-pong tournament created to raise funds for concussion research. Numerous players, including Martin St. Louis, Phil Kessel, David Clarkson and Kevin Westgarth, attended the second annual event Thursday.

"Great to see (Bettman) supporting a great charity event at Smashfest. Maybe we can get a dunk tank or something and make a little more money off of it," quipped Westgarth, a tough Hurricanes winger who was heavily involved in the labour negotiations. "We want to bridge the gaps in our relationship, and hopefully (Bettman's support for concussion research) can go a long way to doing that."

The physical nature of hockey will naturally lead to concussions, Westgarth conceded, but that frequency and severity of head injuries is something worth trying to reduce.

"It's an incredibly important topic to our membership in the PA. We're going to do everything we can to make sure concussions are as small an issue as possible and that guys get treated properly and have long lives after their very short careers."

The future of hockey may rely on both the league and players' ability to jointly tackle the issue of head trauma. The task of reducing concussions dwarfs the two sides' earlier disagreements over contract length and salary caps.

"There's no question that to get anything done we need to both be on board," Westgarth said. "The league is going to have their issues, the players are going to have their issues, and at the end of the day our goals are the same — to keep players safe and to make sure we have an incredible product on the ice, without risking people's livelihood and health."

Bettman insisted both sides are working together, not only on the concussion issue but also on a relationship so fractured last winter.

"I believe we have a constructive, cordial, cooperative and professional relationship that gets stronger by the day," Bettman said.

Good afternoon,

thanks all for defusing the idiotic stories coupled to an airframe simply being scrapped. Which by the way I did not think anything else of myself.
But somebody sent me the aerial Google picture with the question if I could identify this airframe for him because of the strange stories he read, and I could not find anything else on the net but mentioned picture.
But of course you CactusWingers had the answer ready, which I forwarded to him with a picture of a whole row of tailless airliners at a scrapping yard, just to show how common tailless airliners are nowadays.

Cheers,

Ab

Interesting...  Here's the ferry flight to Wilmington:

Looks like it was still operating for Air Atlanta Icelandic when it
was flown to Wilmington in February 2012...  Were they operating it
for Saudi Arabian at the time?

A quick Google search does find several stories online about this
aircraft... Nearly all of them appear to be on some of the more
'interesting' web sites out there. Here's one that includes a
screenshot from Google Maps:
http://intellihub.com/2013/07/05/wilmington-airpark-saudi-arabian-747-ripped-in-half-sitting-on-tarmac/

Looks like most of these sites are involved in paranoid fear mongering
(seems fitting after reading the story at the link above), and they,
along with some guy from YouTube that started this story, wouldn't
know a half-scrapped aircraft if someone dumped one in their yard.
Apparently, the guy on YouTube took his conspiracy theory video about
this aircraft down once a few people told him that it is simply being
scrapped.

> I thought having seen something about this airframe from another member but I cannot find it.

I just searched the Cactus Wings Google Group forum using a few
different phrases and can't find any mention of this aircraft on the
Cactus Wings group. I can't easily find any pics or registration
number information online, either.

Maybe someone else knows more about this? I suppose there may be some
details in the forums on airliners.net, but someone else will have to
find them. I've made a point of not uploading to them in years (like
many other self-respecting photographers) and outright refuse to hang
out with the kids in their forums.
