PHILADELPHIA -- Oliver Ekman-Larsson's power-play goal in the final seconds of the second period snapped a 1-1 tie and pushed the visiting Phoenix Coyotes to a 2-1 victory Friday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Rob Klinkhammer also scored for the Coyotes, and Thomas Greiss stopped 36 of 37 shots in his first start of the season.
The win gave the Coyotes a sweep of their first back-to-back set of games this season; they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 Thursday. It's the first time the Coyotes have won both ends of a back-to-back set since April 6-7, 2012, the final two games of the 2011-12 season.
Maxime Talbot scored for Philadelphia, and Steve Mason made 29 saves in his third consecutive start.
The Flyers, playing their second game under new coach Craig Berube, appeared to steal the momentum late in the second period when Zac Rinaldo jumped on a loose puck in the high slot and threw a puck that was going wide until it hit Talbot's right skate and went past Greiss with 2:31 remaining.
But with 25.8 seconds to go in the period, Rinaldo was called for high-sticking when he hit Mike Ribeiro in the face. The Flyers won the faceoff but couldn't clear the zone, and Ribeiro ended up with the puck along the wall on the left side of the Philadelphia zone. He sent a pass across to Ekman-Larsson, who made beautiful move to drag the puck around Talbot, enter the right circle and fire a hard wrister that Mason got his glove on but couldn't stop from finding the back of the net.
The Flyers played most of the game without top-line left wing Scott Hartnell, who left with a lower-body injury at 7:31 of the first period. They also lost second-line center Vincent Lecavalier to a lower-body injury. He played 13 shifts totaling 12:43 in the first two periods but did not come out to start the third.
The Flyers will have move quickly to reconfigure their lineup; they play at the Red Wings on Saturday.
Even without Hartnell and Lecavalier, the Flyers had opportunities to get back into the game but went 0-for-4 on the power play, including a chance in the third period when Rostislav Klesla was called for boarding at 6:54.
Before the game, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said one of the things he liked from his team Thursday was the forwards' presence in front of the opposing net, and that's where Klinkhammer found himself 2:41 into the game. Derek Morris held a loose puck in at the blue line and floated a shot on goal that hit Klinkhammer's shoulder and dropped low between Mason's skates for his first goal of the season.
The Flyers had a couple of nice chances to tie the game, each thanks to their penalty kill. Adam Hall poked the puck away from Lauri Korpikoski at the Philadelphia blue line and broke in alone, with Koripikoski's only play being to hook down Hall. He was awarded a penalty shot at 9:17, but as the Philadelphia forward skated in and tried to deke, the puck rolled off his stick and Greiss was able to smother it.
On a Coyotes power play later in the first, Claude Giroux caused two turnovers in the Phoenix end and drew a penalty on Ekman-Larsson. The Flyers ended up with a 56-second power play but were unable to manage a shot on goal.
Philadelphia got on the board when the line of Sean Couturier, Talbot and Rinaldo pinned Phoenix deep in its zone. Couturier tried for a wraparound, but the puck got kicked into the middle of the zone, above the hashmarks. Rinaldo spun and fired in one motion. The puck hit Talbot's right skate just to the right of the Phoenix goal and went under Greiss at 17:29 of the second to tie the game 1-1.
