Gateway Airport is one of those several airports in the U.S. that have an IATA (for those not familiar International Air Transportation Association) code that is different from the FAA identifier.
AZA is what the passenger see for their tickets and luggage while IWA(KIWA) is what the FAA sees for flight plans, etc....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix%E2%80%93Mesa_Gateway_Airport
Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport is assigned IWA by the FAA and AZA by the IATA[6] (which assigned IWA to Yuzhny Airport in Ivanovo, Russia[7]). The airport's former IATA code was CHD.[8]
Others include Carlsbad, CA (FAA: CRQ, IATA: CLD), St. Augustine, FL (FAA: SGJ, IATA: UST), Marquette, MI (FAA: SAW, IATA: MQT), Boulder City (FAA: BVU, IATA: BLD).
In the wake of Southwest landing at the wrong Branson, MO airport, I learned that your airline ticket and bags go to BKG and not BBG..... ICAO: KBBG FAA LID: BBG IATA: BKG
In our own neck of the woods, Manassas, Virginia is ICAO/FAA (K)HEF while the IATA code is MNZ.
Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, North Carolina is ICAO/FAA (K)MEB while the IATA code is MXE. This caused confusion not too long ago on another message board since "MEB" is Melbourne, Australia while MXE is the Modena VOR near PHL. When I see MXE, I think of Modena VOR before I think of the airport which are 354 miles apart.
When I think of Phoenix Gateway, I reference what ATC and pilots need to know...(K)IWA..:).

Tobias,IWA is the actual airport code, but AZA is used by the airlines. MD80 N305FA is a Falcon Air used for the DOJ. The mysterious white C130 is probably International Air Response's N119TG. The Safi Airways at GYR is YA-TTC. Our full GYR log is here: http://www.visitingphx.com/gyrdata.html

A dawn visit to Gateway nabbed the airplanes that I’d targeted - the new Intel ERJ shuttles. Below is a complete log minus the six Allegiant MD-80s. For the last time, is it IWA or AZA?1!!

It was early and the pickings were slim. The E concourse is under renovation and Spirit and many/most US Airways departures currently operate from the little island terminal accessed via an underground tunnel, the former home of Delta Connection.

Again, a very quick visit! The international visitors are always the most interesting but the Mexicans (Volaris and Aeromexico Connect) are elusive! This time of year Canadians dominate.

There seemed to be more aircraft here than I ever remember seeing, and a number of aircraft had been moved around on the field. A full log follows, not every aircraft was in the full colors of the noted operator. Also, with spring training about to start in earnest, we’re just about at the end of the time when you can discreetly wander through the Indians/Reds practice facility to get a closer look at the stored narrowbodies. Just sayin’!!!

A convenient stop at Scottsdale between appointments netted three commercial grade aircraft. The (very) nearby Phoenix Open no doubt increased the number of jets here but not by as much as I might have expected. As I’ve noted before, the radio piped into the terminal waiting area is a lovely touch by the way.
