CAPITALS (55-16-6) at COYOTES (34-36-7)
TV: 10 p.m. ET; CSN-DC, FS-A, NHL.TV
Season series: Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist for the Washington Capitals in a 3-2 victory against the Arizona Coyotes at Verizon Center on Feb. 22. Braden Holtby made 25 saves for Washington, allowing goals by Kevin Connauton and Connor Murphy.
Capitals team scope: Holtby is within one of the NHL single-season record for victories after making 17 saves in a 4-2 win at the Colorado Avalanche on Friday. "We're going to do our best to help him out," said Ovechkin, who scored his League-leading 45th goal during a three-goal second period. "It's a lifetime opportunity and we're going to do our best." Holtby is 4-0-1 in his past five starts and 7-1-2 in his past 10, but he could get the night off if coach Barry Trotz decides to play Philipp Grubauer in the second of a back-to-back. Center Nicklas Backstrom (upper body) could return after missing the game in Denver.
Coyotes team scope: This is the final home game of the season for Arizona, which plays its final four games on the road. The Coyotes were eliminated from playoff contention when they lost 4-1 to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. "I think it's just important that every player, including myself, finish going into the summer feeling good about where their game is at; building confidence whether it's on a personal level or as a team," goaltender Mike Smith, who will start, told the Arizona Republic. Arizona recalled forward Laurent Dauphin from Springfield of the American Hockey League on Friday; center Martin Hanzal left the game Thursday with an upper-body injury. Hanzal and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who sat out Thursday because of illness, are day-to-day.
