Imagine missing your call at the NHL Draft because you were in line for a hot dog.
Thankfully, Derek Morris' brother was on hand to help out. Originally aired February 8, 2002, Morris shares that story and more, including the Chris Chelios hockey card you could find in his shoulder pads.
Raised in Edmonton Alberta, Morris was drafted 13th overall in 1996 by his hometown provincial rival – the Calgary Flames.
Then and now
Morris skated in over 1,100 games while notching 424 points over his NHL career – a total that ranks among the top-scoring blueliners to ever play in the league.
Though he got a taste of Stanley Cup playoffs action, Morris never won the Stanley Cup – but he tasted international success with Team Canada as a World Champion in 2004.
After his playing days, Morris retired to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he is a varsity assistant coach at Chaparral High School with the Firebirds hockey team.
