{coyotes} Keller scores twice in Coyotes' 5-2 win over Sabres

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Facing a game they could not afford to lose, the Arizona Coyotes found themselves in a two-goal deficit before the opening period was even halfway over.

Rather than light into his team at the first intermission, coach Rick Tocchet remained calm, made a few slight adjustments. His team responded with one of its best periods of the season and went on to a resounding must-have win.

Clayton Keller had two goals and an assist, Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots after a shaky start and the Coyotes rallied to beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 Saturday night.

''The last thing you want to do is go in that room and make guys nervous by getting upset,'' said Tocchet, who won his 100th game with Arizona. ''I honestly thought the last 10 (minutes) we were OK. A couple mistakes and it's in your net, and then a couple of guys got us back in the game.''

Raanta gave up goals to Marcus Johansson and Jeff Skinner less than a minute apart early in the first period. He was sharp the rest of the way and the Coyotes picked up the pressure, scoring five straight goals to move into a three-way tie for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

Jordan Oesterle had a goal and an assist, Phil Kessel also scored and Oliver Ekman-Larsson added a full-ice, short-handed empty-netter to cap the comeback win.

''It just shows we're mentally strong, we don't give up,'' said Raanta, who's wife gave birth to their second child, Lukas, on Monday. ''Every game is crucial and we really needed these two points.''

Buffalo got off to the fast start, but lost momentum in the second period, when the Coyotes scored three goals. Arizona clamped down defensively after Keller's first goal, pushing the Sabres to the outside, where Raanta could easily track their shots.

Jonas Johansson stopped 26 shots for Buffalo, which has lost three straight to start a four-game road trip and four of six overall.

''It unraveled,'' Sabres coach Ralph Krueger said. ''There was some fatigue in the minds or something because we lost our game for five or six minutes there and couldn't get it back.''

The Coyotes had three days off after losing 2-1 to Florida on Tuesday.

The Sabres had a short turnaround, playing their 12th back-to-back of the season after losing 4-2 at Vegas on Friday night. Carter Hutton gave up three goals on 27 shots and Jonas Johansson got the start against the Coyotes.

He was sharp as Arizona had the early jump, then Buffalo got the early two-goal lead.

Marcus Johansson scored midway through the first period, one-timing a pass from Dominik Kahun following a turnover by Arizona defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin behind the goal.

Skinner scored 44 seconds later on a redirect of a backhanded shot by Wayne Simmonds,

The Coyotes took their turn scoring rapid-fire goals early in the second period.

Oesterle got the first one, one-timing a nifty pass from Keller from behind the goal past Johansson's glove side. Kessel tied it 57 seconds later, punching in a rebound after a mad scramble in the crease.

Keller put the Coyotes up midway through the second, punching a rebound between Johansson's pads after Buffalo's goalie had a turnover behind his own goal.

Keller made it a two-goal lead midway through the third period with his 17th of the season, keeping it on a 2-on-1 and beating Johansson between the pads.

''They got a little bit of momentum, we didn't respond and they sort of shut it down,'' Skinner said. ''We showed flashes in the third of maybe creating some chances, but I don't think we sustained enough pressure to get another one.

NOTES: Buffalo LW Victor Olofsson limped off the ice in the second period and did not return. ... The assist by Simmonds on Skinner's goal was his first point since being acquired from New Jersey in a trade-deadline deal. ... Arizona is 9-2-3 at home since Dec. 31. ... Kahun's assist was his second point in two games since being traded to Buffalo by Pittsburgh. ... Coyotes D Jason Demers returned after missing 12 games with a lower-body injury.''

{coyotes} Bobrovsky stops 36 shots in Panthers' 2-1 win over Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 36 shots, Mike Hoffman scored for the third straight game and the Florida Panthers spoiled Darcy Kuemper's return with a 2-1 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

Florida allowed 10 total goals in back-to-back losses to the Kings and Golden Knights before arriving in the desert, but played a much tighter defensive game against the Coyotes.

''Today was a team win. They blocked shots, they finished checks, they back checked,'' Bobrovsky said. ''It was smart defense, smart puck management.''

Kuemper was solid in his return after missing 28 games with a lower-body injury, stopping 23 shots. He gave up a goal to Frank Vatrano in the second period and Hoffman's 25th of the season on a power play in the third.

Brad Richardson scored for Arizona, which missed on numerous good scoring chances to lose for the third time in four games.

''We didn't capitalize. That's it,'' Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. ''We had a lot of chances, they didn't have much and we didn't score. That's the game.''

The NHL's highest-scoring team early in the season, Florida has struggled since the All-Star break, slipping to 11th in the Eastern Conference. General manager Dave Tallon opted to shake things up a little at the trade deadline, sending center Vincent Trocheck to Carolina for Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark and a pair of prospects.

The Coyotes took the opposite approach, opting to stand pat while sitting eighth in the Western Conference.

Arizona did get a big boost with the return of Kuemper, who had been out since Dec. 19.

Still the NHL's save percentage leader, Kuemper was sharp early in his return, turning away a couple of good chances in the first period.

''I felt better as the game went on,'' Kuemper said. ''The more shots you face, the more you just start playing again. I felt good.''

Bobrovsky made some tough early saves, stopping Taylor Hall and Nick Schmaltz from close range early. Richardson beat him late in the first period, scoring a short-handed goal from the slot on a rebound of his own shot.

The Panthers turned up the pressure in the second period and Vatrano beat Kuemper to the stick side on a shot through traffic from the top of the right circle.

Borovsky made two rapid-fire saves on Conor Garland and Oliver Ekman-Larsson in the final minute to send the game to the third period tied 1-all.

Both goalies made difficult saves early in the third period and Kuemper made a sliding stop on Hoffman during a power play midway through.

Hoffman scored seconds later, though, beating Kuemper glove side from the left circle on a feed from Jonathan Huberdeau along the backboards.

''Sergei did a great job for us, we were able to clear pucks in front of him, did a good job on breakouts,'' Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad said. ''It was a full five-man unit by the Ds and our wingers locked down the points and did a good job of forcing everything to the outside.''

NOTES: Coyotes D Jakob Chychrun missed his third straight game with a lower-body injury. ... Panthers D Mike Matheson returned after missing three games with an illness. ... Richardson's short-handed goal was Arizona's fourth of the season. ... Ekblad had an assist on Vatrano's goal, his eighth in seven games.

{coyotes} Kuemper to start for Coyotes against Panthers

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Darcy Kuemper will start for the Arizona Coyotes against the Florida Panthers at Gila River Arena on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET; SNE, SNP, SNO (JIP), FS-A, FS-A PLUS, FS-F, NHL.TV).

The goalie has been out since sustaining a lower-body injury against the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 19. He went through a full practice Monday. He is 15-8-2 with a 2.17 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and two shutouts in 25 games.

"He's been our best our best player, for the last year, year and a half," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "Now we got our best player back. Goaltending hasn't been our problem, but this just strengthens our goaltending."

The Coyotes (31-26-8) are 11-13-4 since Kuemper was injured, with Antti Raanta (14-14-3, 2.65 GAA) getting most of the playing time. Arizona is tied with the Calgary Flames for the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference, and two points behind the Vancouver Canucks for third place in the Pacific Division.

Kuemper was close to returning until he had a setback during the morning skate Feb. 10 at the Montreal Cannadiens. He played on a conditioning assignment at Tucson of the American Hockey League on Saturday, making 26 saves on 28 shots against Stockton.

"It's mental when you're hurt, a lot of mental games in your head where you just can't get over the hump and I think that's one of them," Tocchet said. "It's been trying mentally but he's made it back and now hopefully it's all good stuff for him from here on in.

"It's like making a trade at the trade deadline, we got our starter back. But we've gotten some really good goaltending."

Kuemper was chosen for the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis on Jan. 25 but was unable to play because of his injury.

{coyotes} Keller, Garland each score 2, power Coyotes past Lightning

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) --

The Arizona Coyotes had good reason to be lacking energy Saturday night, playing their fourth game in six days and their league-high 65th game of the season against one of the NHL's hottest teams.

They responded with their highest scoring game of the campaign.

Clayton Keller and Conor Garland each had two goals and an assist and Arizona beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3.

Derek Stepan scored with 1:14 to play.' data-reactid="35">Keller's goal on a breakaway at 11:51 of the third period gave Arizona a two-goal advantage. Garland added a power-play goal at 14:28, and Derek Stepan scored with 1:14 to play.

Carl Soderberg and Brad Richardson scored and Taylor Hall had two assists. Antti Raanta made 27 saves. Arizona lost a two-goal lead during a wild second period, but picked up its third straight win at home with four unanswered goals and moved back into wild card position in the Western Conference.

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said he didn't want his team to be embarrassed by the high-scoring Lightning after Arizona lost 1-0 at St. Louis two night earlier.

"To me, it was just a complete effort from everybody. I just felt that we stuck to the game plan," Tocchet said. "Our team is frustrating because when we stick to the game plan we can be a good team. We had that lead and then we started getting out of our comfort zone again and made a couple mistakes, but then we regained it. I really liked our third period because we kept pressing, we didn't back up and that's the way you have to win in this league."

Anthony Cirelli, Ondrej Palat and Brayden Point scored and Cameron Gaunce had two assists for the Lightning, who lost their second straight after their franchise-record 11-game winning streak came to an end. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 34 shots.

The Lightning have lost back-to-back games for the first time since November 16 and 19.

"It's extremely disappointing. We're a much better team than them," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said.

Arizona evened the score at 1 with 2:24 to play in the period. Garland gathered in the rebound of Ilya Lyubushkin's shot and scored from the opposite side. It was Garland's team-leading 21st of the season.

Seventy seconds later, Alex Goligoski dropped the puck off for Keller, who zipped a high wrist shot past Vasilevskiy for a 2-1 Coyotes lead after one period.

"I think the last five games, I've been getting some chances and a lot of zone time," Keller said. "I just have to keep working, keep shooting the puck and doing the right things away from the rink and good things start to happen."

The Coyotes took advantage of an early second-period power play. As it wound down, Garland moved in on goal and turned around a defender enough to backhand a pass into the middle, where Soderberg was waiting and scored at 5:51.

The teams combined for three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 19 seconds of the second.

The Lightning made it 3-2 at 8:45 of the second on Palat's rebound of a shot by Gaunce that Raanta saved initially. Moments later, Point put in a loose puck for his 22nd goal, set up by the efforts of Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov, tying the score at 3-all.

The Coyotes responded quickly. Hall overpowered Lightning defenseman Braydon Coburn to force a turnover, then passed out from the boards while on his knees to Richardson, who scored his fifth of the season.

"We've been battling injuries for a long time now and I think we've done a great job overcoming that," Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman said. "Bottom line is that we have to play better and not give up this many goals and be better as a team."

NOTES: Coyotes G Darcy Kuemper, an All-Star this season, was assigned to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL for conditioning purposes and played there Saturday. He's missed more than two months with a lower body injury, and could play as soon as the Coyotes' next game. … The Coyotes were without two other key contributors, D Jakob Chychrun and F Christian Fischer, out with lower body injuries. Chychrun could miss the next few games, coach Rick Tocchet said. … Lightning D Erik Cernak left the game in the second period with a lower body injury and didn't return. … 2019 National League MVP Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers attended the game, hearing a mixture of boos and cheers despite wearing a Coyotes jersey and being from nearby Chandler, Arizona.

{coyotes} Kuemper could play Tuesday for Coyotes against Panthers

Darcy Kuemper could return for the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday when they host the Florida Panthers at Gila River Arena.

"He's a possibility for the next game, so that's good news," Tocchet said of the goalie before the Coyotes hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday (8 p.m. ET; FS-A PLUS, SUN, NHL.TV). "We'll get a practice in with him. He's got to get a good, full practice in. He'll get one Monday for sure, and then we'll talk about Tuesday for him. Maybe there's a possibility he'll play."

Kuemper, who hasn't played since Dec. 19 because of a lower-body injury, was sent to Tucson of the American Hockey League on Saturday for conditioning purposes. Tucson plays Stockton on Saturday.

Kuemper is 15-8-2 with a 2.17 goals-against average, a .929 save percentage and two shutouts in 25 games this season. He was close to returning before he had a setback during the morning skate prior to the game at the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 10.

The Coyotes (30-26-8) are 10-13-4 since Kuemper was injured. They are tied with the Calgary Flames for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference and are two points behind the Vancouver Canucks for third in the Pacific Division.

{coyotes} Jordan Binnington blanks Coyotes as Blues post 1-0 win

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Ryan O'Reilly scored and Jordan Binnington made 14 saves to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 1-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday night.

Binnington recorded his second consecutive shutout and the eighth of his career. He had allowed at least three goals in eight straight starts prior to his shutout performances.

Antti Raanta stopped 45 of the Blues' season-high 46 shots on goal and fell to 13-14-13.

O'Reilly scored on the Blues' 43rd shot, a backhander with 8 minutes remaining in the third period that caromed off the goal post, hit Raanta in the back, and bounced into the goal. The goal was O'Reilly's 11th of the season and just his third at home.

St. Louis outshot Arizona 28-12 through the first two periods, including 19-4 in the second.

David Perron appeared to have scored his team-leading 24th goal of the season on a slap shot from the left faceoff circle 9:52 into the second period. However, Arizona coach Rick Tocchet successfully challenged that Jaden Schwartz entered the zone offside, negating the goal.

Arizona was unable to convert on a 53-second, two-man advantage 9:38 into the first period, when Oskar Sundqvist was called for slashing with Justin Faulk already in the penalty box.

NOTES:

Blues D Marco Scandella made his debut with the team after being acquired Tuesday from Montreal for a pair of draft picks. … St. Louis is 15-2-10 in one-goal games. … Arizona was shut out for the fifth time this season. … Arizona allowed at least 40 shots on goal for the fourth time this season.

{coyotes} Dallas Stars' Rick Bowness: Jamie Benn hit on Oliver Ekman-Larsson 'looks a lot worse than it is'

Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn will not receive any supplemental discipline after receiving a five-minute major and a game misconduct on Wednesday night for boarding Arizona Coyotes defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

"Player Safety viewed it as a 50-50 puck chase, not a typical boarding suspension where one player was tracking another," TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun wrote on Twitter Thursday. "They felt it was definitely worth the boarding major which Benn got in-game, but felt it didn't rise to the level of supplemental discipline."

The incident occurred in the second period when Benn drilled Ekman-Larsson from behind, sending his face into the glass. Ekman-Larsson did not play another shift in the second period, but was able to return to the game in the third period.

Stars interim head coach Rick Bowness argued after his team's 3-2 win that the hit looked worse than it was.

"That's a tough call," Bowness said, per The Athletic. "Two guys are going for the puck and one guy turns into the boards and they are going to bang. It probably looks a lot worse than it is. I hope the guy is OK, and he finished the game so he must be OK. It's one of those, sometimes you put a referee in a tough position. I think that's one of those."

Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said Ekman-Larsson hurt his neck on the hit before being able to return.

"Yeah, his neck was pretty bad," Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet said. "He was out for a while. It was just more of his neck being pretty sore."

Prior to his ejection, Benn was held pointless in 4:20 of ice time.

In 59 games so far this season, Benn has 18 goals and 14 assists.

{coyotes} Raanta stops 25 shots in Coyotes' 2-1 win over Islanders

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Antti Raanta stopped 25 shots, Conor Garland scored his team-leading 20th goal and the Arizona Coyotes beat the New York Islanders 2-1 on Monday.

The Coyotes followed one of their best games of the season against Washington with another solid performance two days later.

Raanta was sharp for the second straight game after a shaky performance against Ottawa. Clayton Keller scored his first goal in nine games in the first period, and Garland became Arizona's first 20-goal scorer of the season with a one-timer in the third.

The Islanders got off to a shaky start on their four-game Western Conference trip, getting shut out by Nashville and Vegas.

New York failed on numerous good chances against the Coyotes before Anthony Beauviller scored the Islanders' first goal in 166 minutes in the third period. Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots.

The Coyotes had one of their best all-around games Saturday night, holding Alex Ovechkin at 698 career goals in a 3-1 victory over Washington.

Arizona was buzzing early against the Islanders, creating multiple chances before Keller scored in the opening five minutes. His shot from the slot caromed off New York defenseman Nick Leddy past Varlamov.

Raanta, who stopped 36 shots against the Capitals, made a series of tough saves when the Islanders turned up the pressure, particularly during a power play late in the first.

Devon Toews nearly slipped one past Raanta early in the second on a sharp-angle shot. The puck went under Raanta's pads, off the toe of his skate and hit the post. A video review showed the puck tumble along the line, but not all the way over it.

Garland put the Coyotes up 2-0 early in the third, one-timing a nifty no-look pass from Christian Dvorak.

Beauvillier scored New York's first goal of the road trip shortly after, redirecting Andy Greene's shot past Raanta's glove side.

Raanta made a series of tough saves down the stretch to clinch it.

NOTES: The Coyotes have killed off 18 straight penalties after holding New York scoreless in three attempts with the man advantage. ... Greene was in the top defensive pairing with Ryan Pulock after being acquired in a trade from New Jersey on Sunday. ... Dvorak has matched his career high at 37 points. ... The Islanders had a seven-game points streak (5-1-2) against Arizona snapped.
