{coyotes} Coyotes to name Bill Armstrong as new general manager

The Arizona Coyotes will name Bill Armstrong the team's next general manager, Sportsnet's Elliotte Freidman reports.

Armstrong has worked in various roles with the St. Louis Blues for 16 years and most recently served as assistant general manager with the club. He replaces John Chayka, who parted ways with Arizona in July.

Andy Strickland, who covers the Blues for Fox Sports Midwest, reports Armstrong will sign a five-year contract with the Coyotes that will pay him more than $1 million a season.

The Blues hired Armstrong to be an amateur scout in 2004 after his playing career ended in 1999 and in 2010 he was promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting. He added Assistant General Manager to his title in 2018.

The Coyotes and Chayka parted ways shortly before the NHL resumed play this summer with both sides throwing angry shots at each other in statements announcing the parting. Commissioner Gary Bettman is still expected to make a ruling on some of the contract legalities involved in the split.

Steve Sullivan was promoted to interim general manager in place of Chayka but it's unclear for now whether he will remain with the organization. Sullivan was one of several candidates to interview for the full-time job, including broadcasters Pierre McGuire and Kevin Weekes, and former Los Angeles Kings assistant general manager Mike Futa.
