{coyotes} NHL-leading Rangers get 50th win, Quick sets US record in 8-5 victory over Coyotes

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Alexis Lafreniere had three goals and two assists, Jonathan Quick broke the victory record for U.S.-born goalies and the NHL-leading New York Rangers reached 50 wins, beating the Arizona Coyotes 8-5 on Saturday.

Jonathan Quick stopped 27 shots in moving past Ryan Miller with his 392nd victory.

Artemi Panarin had an empty-net goal with 2:25 left, his 44th of the season, and had three assists to give him 63. Lafreniere got the hat trick with an empty-netter with 14 seconds left. He has 25 goals, a career high for the 2020 first overall pick.

"What an amazing career for him," Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said about Quick, who broke into the league in 2007-08.

The 38-year-old spent 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. He won two Stanley Cups and was the Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP in 2011-12.

"It's a fun team to be a part of," Quick said about the Rangers. "These guys work hard every day, they push each other.

"We've been finding different ways to win throughout the year. We have that confidence and the ability. They tied it up and the game could go either way and we find a way to win."

As for Lafreniere, Laviolette said, "He continues to play really well. His line was dangerous the entire game."

"We've done a pretty good job of coming together this year. It was back and forth a little bit but they've got a good young team. We came out in the third period and we did the job."

Tied at 3 in the third period, the Rangers scored three times in the first 10 minutes to seemingly break it open. Chris Kreider, Zac Jones and Barclay Goodrow had the goals in the third, with Goodrow's short-handed strike the eventual deciding goal.

Arizona cut it to 6-5 before the empty-net goals sealed the win.

The Rangers, with 104 points, won their fifth straight and finished March 10-3-1. New York is 20-4-1 since February.

Ryan Lindgren had a goal and two assists for the Rangers.

Matias Maccelli, Clayton Keller, Nick Bjugstad, Lawson Crouse and Logan Cooley scored for Arizona. Keller has a season-high eight-game points streak. He has 31 goals. Bjugstad has goals in four straight games.

Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves for Arizona, which has lost six in a row over three seasons to the Rangers.

"We played good defense but we had major breakdowns, critical mistakes. That's frustrating," said Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny, whose team is 4-2 on a seven-game homestand. "There's a lot of positives. We want more. We scored five goals against a really good team."

Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba returned after missing 11 games because of a lower body injury. The Rangers captain last played March 4.

{coyotes} Logan Cooley has 1st NHL hat trick, Coyotes stop Predators' points streak at 18 with 8-4 win

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Logan Cooley had his first NHL hat trick, Clayton Keller added a goal and three assists and the Arizona Coyotes snapped the Nashville Predators' point streak at 18 games with an 8-4 victory Thursday night.

Nashville had been 16-0-2 since its last loss Feb. 15 at home against Dallas. It was the longest points streak in Predators history and the longest in the NHL this season.

Arizona won its second straight and went 3-0-1 against the Predators this season. Connor Ingram made 30 saves for the Coyotes.

Cooley, a 19-year-old rookie, had the first multi-goal game of his career and has 16 goals for the season. He scored an unassisted empty-netter to finish it off.

Jack McBain, Nick Bjugstad, Nick Schmaltz and Matias Maccelli also scored for the Coyotes. Josh Doan had two assists after scoring twice in his NHL debut Tuesday night.

After former Coyote Jason Zucker scored the first two goals of the game for Nashville, McBain and Cooley tied it up in the first period. Keller's goal, his 31st, came on a power play after Nashville was penalized for having too many men on the ice. Keller extended his points streak to seven games. He leads the Coyotes in goals and assists (36).

Juuse Saros was pulled after two periods and six goals allowed. He made 22 saves before being replaced by Kevin Lankinen. The Predators pulled him for a sixth attacker, but Maccelli scored into the empty net with 6:03 left to make it 7-3.

Gustav Nyqvist and Filip Forsberg scored the other goals for the Predators. Forsberg's, his 41st, came on a power play.

Zucker had nine goals in 51 games with Arizona when he was traded to the Predators on March 8 for a sixth-round draft pick.

{coyotes} Coyotes eliminated after 2nd-half slump, lack of scoring

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Arizona Coyotes failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

Arizona (30-37-5) was eliminated when the Vegas Golden Knights gained a point in a 5-4 overtime loss at the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

The Coyotes have qualified for the postseason once since they reached the Western Conference Final in 2012. They lost to the Colorado Avalanche in five games in the best-of-7 Eastern Conference First Round in 2020 after defeating the Predators in four games in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers.

Here is a look at what happened in the 2023-24 season for the Coyotes and why things could be better next season.

The skinny

Potential unrestricted free agents: Liam O'Brien, F; Joshua Brown, D; Travis Dermott, D

Potential restricted free agents: Barrett Hayton, F; Sean Durzi, D; Juuso Valimaki, D; Michael Kesselring, D; J.J. Moser, D

Potential 2024 Draft picks: 13

What went wrong

Dry spell: On New Year's Day, Arizona held the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference with a 19-14-2 record and a manageable eight points behind the Dallas Stars for third in the Central Division, giving fans reasons to be excited. Since Feb. 5, the Coyotes are tied with the San Jose Sharks for the most losses in the NHL (7-15-2), rank 30th in points percentage (.333) and have dropped 21 points back of the second wild card. Arizona lost 14 straight games (0-12-2) from Jan. 24-Feb. 29, including not winning a game in February (0-9-2).

Offensive omission: Clayton Keller has scored at least 30 goals for a second straight season, but the 25-year-old forward needs  help if the Coyotes wish to take positive steps. Keller has 63 points (30 goals, 33 assists) in 68 games, 11 more than the next closest teammate, forward Nick Schmaltz (52 points; 20 goals, 32 assists). Keller has 15 more points than forward Matias Maccelli (48 points; 12 goals, 36 assists), and 22 more than center Nick Bjugstad (41 points; 19 goals, 22 assists). Arizona is averaging 2.93 goals per game, 22nd in the NHL, and are 24th with a minus-23 goal differential.

Road weary: The Coyotes are 19-17-0 at Mullett Arena, their temporary home on the campus of Arizona State University, but have struggled mightily on the road (11-20-5). Their 11 road wins are tied with the Ottawa Senators for the fourth-fewest in the NHL, and they rank last in road winning percentage in one-goal games (.167).

Reasons for optimism

Cooley is a keeper: Logan Cooley, the No. 3 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, has had an impressive rookie season. The 19-year-old center is fifth among NHL rookies with 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists) in 72 games. He's averaging 15:49 of ice time and ranks eighth among first-year forwards with 26 takeaways. Few will forget the highlight-reel goal Cooley scored in his first NHL action for the Coyotes against the Los Angeles Kings in Melbourne, Australia, when he eluded three defenders with a spin-o-rama move before pulling the puck back to his forehand for a goal in a 5-3 win as part of the 2023 Global Series -- Melbourne on Sept. 23.

The draft: Arizona has invested in picks to fuel its rebuild. It had 12 last year, including two in the first round (defenseman Dmitriy Simashev, No. 6; forward Daniil But, No. 12), and has 13 in the 2024 NHL Draft, including seven in the opening three rounds. The Coyotes have their own first-round pick this year, which could be the No. 1 selection and the right to select projected top forward prospect Macklin Celebrini of Boston University. Arizona has never picked No. 1; it has selected at No. 3 on three occasions.

Youngsters on the rise: Arizona's future appears bright with the players it already has in the lineup and its pipeline. Maccelli, 23, has already set an NHL career high in goals (12), and 20-year-old forward Dylan Guenther, the No. 9 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, has 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) in 35 games. Defenseman Michael Kesselring, 24, has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists), 93 hits, 45 blocked shots and has averaged 15:16 of ice time in 55 games as a rookie. Forward Josh Doan, 22, scored twice in his NHL debut, a 6-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, after being recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League. He was Tucson's top scorer this season with 46 points (26 goals, 20 assists) in 62 games. A second-round pick (No. 37) in the 2021 draft, he's the son of Coyotes franchise scoring leader and longtime captain Shane Doan. Forward Conor Geekie, the No. 11 pick in the 2022 draft, has 99 points (43 goals) in 55 games with Wenatchee (26 games) and Swift Current (29) of the Western Hockey League.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Josh Doan had two goals including the go-ahead score in his first NHL game and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Nick Bjugstad, Nick Schmaltz, Dylan Guenther and Matias Maccelli also scored as Arizona pulled away with four goals in the third period. Doan deflected a shot by Maccelli past Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins with 8:29 left in the third for the go-ahead score. Karel Vejmelka stopped 24 shots for the Coyotes.

The son of longtime Coyotes captain Shane Doan, Josh Doan scored an unassisted goal in the second period to put Arizona ahead 2-1, backhanding the puck past Merzlikins at close range.

Doan, from nearby Scottsdale, is the first Arizona native to play for the franchise. The 22-year-old played collegiately at Arizona State. He was called up Monday from Tucson of the AHL, where he led the Roadrunners with 26 goals and 20 assists in 62 games.

Schmaltz and Guenther's goals were short-handed. Schmaltz's was his 20th of the season.

Boone Jenner and Zach Werenski scored for Columbus, which has lost five straight. Merzlikins had 29 saves for the Blue Jackets, who haven't won since March 16.

A minute after Doan's first goal, Michael Kesselring was penalized for tripping and with 38.8 seconds left in the period, Werenski scored on the power play for Columbus to tie it. Werenski assisted on Jenner's goal and Johnny Gaudreau assisted on both.

The Coyotes were officially eliminated from postseason play on Tuesday when eighth-place Vegas picked up a point in a 5-4 overtime loss at Nashville. The Blue Jackets were ousted from the playoff race Sunday.

Clayton Keller's five-game goal streak come to an end. It's the franchise's longest streak since Daniel Briere had six in January 2001. Keller did have an assist on Maccelli's goal.

The Blue Jackets had a goal taken off the board in the final minute of the first period when Alexandre Texier was penalized for high sticking before scoring in front of the net.

There were fights in each period. Two minutes into the game, Mathieu Olivier and Liam O'Brien squared off near center ice. Each got five minutes for fighting. Erik Gudbrandson and Arizona's Josh Brown fought in the second period and with 1:21 to go, the Coyotes' Michael Carcone and the Blue Jackets' James Malatesta - also making his NHL debut - exchanged punches.

{coyotes} Miro Heiskanen breaks late tie, Stars hold off Coyotes 4-2 for 4th straight victory

--

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Miro Heiskanen broke a tie with 5:28 left and the Dallas Stars won their fourth consecutive game, beating the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 on Sunday night.

Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Matt Duchene also scored, with Duchene getting an empty-netter with 1:30 to play. Duchene also had two assists to help the Stars keep pace with Colorado for the Central Division lead. The Avalanche also won Sunday, giving each team 97 points.

Jake Oettinger made 26 saves for Dallas.

Clayton Keller scored his 30th goal for Arizona. It's his fifth straight game with a goal, a career best, and he joined Keith Tkachuk (1996-99) and Jeremy Roenick (1999-2001) as Coyotes with consecutive 30-goal seasons.

Nick Bjugstad also scored for the Coyotes.

Arizona had a two-man advantage in the third period when the score was still tied, but Dallas killed it off and completed a season sweep of the Coyotes, having won both previous meetings in Dallas, including Wednesday's 5-2 victory. Dallas has won nine of its last 11 games.

"It was a huge kill. We got a ton of momentum off that kill," Stars coach Peter DeBoer. "That was vintage Jake."

Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny agreed.

"You don't score, you give momentum to the other team, and they scored not long after," Tourigny said. "Absolutely it was a turning point."

"I like our effort, I like our performance, I hate the result. They worked extremely hard and it's frustrating for them."

Connor Ingram stopped 31 shots for Arizona, which had a three-game home winning streak halted. The Coyotes are 6-6 overall in March after going 0-for-February on the back end of a 14-game winless streak.

Benn opened the scoring 4:21 into the game, with the Dallas captain getting his 16th goal of the season. Keller tied it late in the period, beating Oettinger from the left side.

Tyler Seguin gave Dallas a 2-1 lead 2:19 into the second period.

In the third period, just after an Arizona power play ended, Bjugstad poked a rebound past Oettinger to tie it again.

Cameron Crotty made his NHL debut for the Coyotes. The 24-year-old defenseman, called up early Sunday, played 10 minutes, recording two of Arizona's 20 blocked shots. J.J. Moser led the team with four.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Dylan Guenther scored on a breakaway at 4:12 of overtime to give the Arizona Coyotes a 2-1 victory over Seattle on Friday night, the Kraken's seventh straight loss.

Guenther put a wrist shot over former Arizona State goalie Joey Daccord's glove.

Clayton Keller tied it for Arizona with 1:08 left in the regulation with his 29th goal. He tipped in a shot from Nick Bjugstad.

Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves for the Coyotes in the first of seven straight home games. They have split their last four games but have lost 19 of 25.

Kraken rookie Ryker Evans scored his first career goal to open the scoring at 7:40 of the third period, beating Vejmelka with a wrist shot from a severe angle in the left circle. He had seven assists in his previous 23 games.

The Kraken gave up two goals in the final 1:20 in a 3-1 loss at Vegas on Thursday night.

Daccord made 19 saves at 4,400-seat Mullett Arena on the Arizona State campus. Daccord played for the Sun Devils before Mullett opened.

Arizona forward Michael Carcone had an apparent tying goal disallowed midway through the third. A video review showed that Carcone kicked the puck into the net from right out in front.

The Kraken, 29th in the NHL in scoring, have only 10 goals in the last seven games.
