The Utah Mammoth have signed prospect Gabe Smith to a three-year, entry-level contract on Friday.

Smith, 18, was drafted 103rd overall by the Mammoth in 2024 and recorded 20 goals and 39 points in 52 games for the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League's Moncton Wildcats last season.

He added six goals and 22 points in 19 playoff games, helping the Wildcats to a Gilles-Courteau Trophy as QMJHL champions.

"We are very pleased to sign Gabe to an entry-level contract," Mammoth general manager Bill Armstrong said in a statement. "Gabe has had a strong season and brings a great amount of toughness, size, and offensive upside to the organization. He has earned this deal and we look forward to his continued development."

The 6-foot-4 forward has been a key producer for Moncton at the Memorial Cup, recording two goals and two assists in their 6-2 win over the Rimouski Oceanic on Wednesday and advancing his team into the semifinals.

Moncton will take on the Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights in the Memorial Cup semifinals on Friday with the winner to challenge the Western Hockey League champion Medicine Hat Tigers in the final.

A former first-round selection is on his way to join the Utah Mammoth.

Forward Daniil But has agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract, the team announced on Wednesday.

"We are very pleased to sign Daniil to an NHL contract," said Bill Armstrong, general manager of the Mammoth in a statement. "Daniil is a highly skilled forward with a great shot and playmaking skills who is coming off a career season. We are looking forward to seeing him in a Mammoth sweater."

The 20-year-old was selected 12th overall in the 2023 draft by the Mammoth, who were still the Arizona Coyotes at the time.

But spent the 2024-25 season with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL, logging 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists) in 54 appearances. He set new career highs in assists, points and average ice time (11:47). The six-foot-six, 216-pound forward also helped Lokomotiv capture its first Gagarin Cup championship this year.

His move to Utah will reunite But with top prospect Dmitri Simashev, who Utah also signed to an entry-level deal on Wednesday. The pair spent time as teammates previously while in Lomotiv's system.

A native of Yaroslavl, Russia, But has represented his home country at multiple international tournaments, including a gold medal run at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Dmitri Simashev has been brought into the Utah Mammoth fold.

The team announced a three-year, entry-level deal for the 20-year-old defenceman on Wednesday.

A native of Kostroma, Russia, Simashev was the sixth overall pick of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

"We are thrilled to sign Dmitri to an NHL contract," general manager Bill Armstrong said in a statement. "Dmitri has established himself as one of the top defenseman prospects in the NHL and we look forward to watching him play for the Mammoth for many years to come."

Simashev appeared in 56 regular-season games for the Kontinental Hockey League's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, as well as 21 playoff games as the team captured its first ever Gagarin Cup.

{coyotes} Daly: No playoff format changes discussed in CBA talks; progress made on LTIR

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

While talks continue between the NHL and National Hockey League Players' Association on a new collective bargaining agreement, changes to the league's playoff format have not been discussed.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun in The Athletic(opens in a new tab) that the division-based seeding has not been raised as an issue by either side.

"Yeah, so the way I would answer that is at any point in time on any issue, there can be discussions between the NHL and the NHLPA, but I will say that with respect to this particular issue, it hasn't even been raised or discussed as part of our (CBA) discussions with the Players' Association," Daly said. "Look, we have our own view with respect to the merits to the current system. There does not appear to be agitation on the players' side about that format."

The NHL has used its current playoff format since 2013-14, with each of the four division winners drawing a wild-card team in the first round of the postseason and the winner of that series advancing to face the winner between the second and third-place finishers in their division.

This season, the Carolina Hurricanes drew the New Jersey Devils in the first round after finishing second in the Metropolitan Division. On paper Carolina, who finished fourth in the Eastern Conference, drew an easier matchup than the Toronto Maple Leafs who finished second in the conference and first in the Atlantic Division. The Maple Leafs played the Ottawa Senators, who finished sixth in the East with 97 points, six more than the Devils who were tied with the Montreal Canadiens for the least points among playoff qualifiers.

In the Western Conference, the Dallas Stars finished third in the Western Conference but drew the Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division bracket despite Colorado having the fifth-best record in the conference. Based a on a one-through-eight seeding in the conference, the Stars would have faced the Edmonton Oilers, who now await them in the Western Conference Final.

The Oilers have met - and eliminated - the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the playoffs in each of the past four years.

Playoff LTIR changes on the table

Daly did confirm to LeBrun that changes continue to be discussed on changing the removal of the salary cap in the playoffs, which teams have used to bring players back from long-term injured reserve after using their cap space at the trade deadline.

"Nothing's done until it's done, but I would tell you that I think we've made progress toward getting to a good resolution on that issue." Daly said.

Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk, Edmonton Oilers winger Evander Kane, Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog and Dallas Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen are the among the players who have returned this postseason after being on LTIR at the trade deadline.

{coyotes} NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says league encouraged by status of CBA talks with players

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — The NHL is encouraged by the status of collective bargaining talks, Commissioner Gary Bettman said Friday, adding that he's optimistic a deal will be done long before the September 2026 expiration of the current deal between the league and its players.

Talks began in earnest earlier this year and given the current state of the game — revenues soaring, the sport booming and some additional momentum that came out of the 4 Nations Face-Off event in February — there was no reason to think the sides would encounter major snags.

"Sooner rather than later?" Bettman said, responding to a question about when he'd like to see a deal done. "I mean, we have plenty of time. We have the rest of this season and all of next season. But I don't envision it taking a year to get done.

"To the contrary, I think it'll get done sooner rather later," Bettman continued. "I don't have a timetable to give you. But I do think things are progressing nicely."

The current CBA does not expire until Sept. 15, 2026. There has been optimism that a new deal between the NHL and the NHL Players Association could be reached in the coming months, and Bettman's comments Friday before watching the Florida-Toronto Eastern Conference semifinal game did nothing to suggest otherwise.

The fact that there's a pleasant tone around talks of the negotiations is a major deviation from what has tripped the NHL up at times in the past, with some CBA talks ending with work stoppages — including one that cost the league an entire season.

The league and union have already agreed on and revealed salary cap figures for each of the next three seasons, with the ceiling going up by record amounts every year.

"We're talking and we're getting together on a pretty regular basis," Bettman said. "I think the conversations are constructive. I think ultimately they'll be productive. And I think in terms of the relationship that the NHL has with the NHLPA, my relationship with (NHLPA head) Marty Walsh is in a very good place. And so, I remain very positive and optimistic that we're going to come together and get this done."

Playoff viewership

With three Canadian teams among the eight still alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Bettman said the league is pleased with it is seeing numbers-wise and interest-wise.

He pointed to these playoffs as the latest sign of competitive balance in the league.

"Our buildings are all full and it's great to see the fan reaction," Bettman said. "The ebb and flow of which teams get in and how many Canadian teams or how many U.S. Teams, it is what it is. ... You look at the first round and I don't think there's anything comparable to it in sports, certainly in terms of the playoffs We're in a good place."

{coyotes} Utah Mammoth unveiled as permanent brand identity after 4 rounds of surveys, fan vote

Utah Mammoth.

That is the permanent brand identity of Utah's NHL franchise after a 13-month process that included four rounds of surveys and more than 850,000 votes, the team announced Wednesday.

Mammoth was the fans' clear favorite in the final round of voting, according to the team. The name -- deliberately singular, in an all-for-one spirit -- honors an animal that lived in Utah during the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago.

The primary logo, called the "Mountain Mammoth," includes the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains on the crown, the outline of the state of Utah in one of the peaks and tusks curving up to form a "U." The rallying cry is "Tusks Up."

The Mountain Mammoth charges across the front of the home jersey, while an updated "U-T-A-H" steps down the front of the away jersey.

The colors will be the same used by the Utah Hockey Club during the team's inaugural 2024-25 season: Rock Black, Mountain Blue and Salt White.

https://media.d3.nhle.com/image/private/t_ratio16_9-size40/dpr_2.0/f_png/prd/qgijqeqcmd2ouolnrxf2.png

Owners Ryan and Ashley Smith will hold a press conference with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at 1 p.m. ET Wednesday at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

"From Day 1, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate today's launch with the entire state," the Smiths said in a statement. "The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from and the unstoppable force we're building together."

The NHL established a new franchise in Utah on April 18, 2024, and Utah purchased the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes.

The branding process of a professional sports team usually takes at least 18 months from design to trademark clearance. On a compressed timeline, Utah adopted the temporary identity of the Utah Hockey Club while working on the permanent identity with the design firm Doubleday & Cartwright.

Fans voted on names and logos. In the end, Utah Mammoth stomped the other finalists: Utah Hockey Club and Utah Outlaws.

"When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented -- going through four rounds of community voting, including getting feedback not only on potential names but also on potential logos," the Smiths said. "We love the passion of the people of Utah and the way they showed up for the team during its inaugural season and the energy they brought to voting on its permanent identity."

Paleontologists have found mammoth bones "at various spots in the state, some so well-preserved that they still contained tatters of DNA," according to an article on the Natural History Museum of Utah website.

That gives the Mammoth historical significance, while details provide a sense of place, according to the team.

The "Mountain Mammoth" primary logo also sits on the shoulders of the away jersey. A new "Utah Badge" secondary logo sits on the shoulders of the home jersey, featuring the outline of the state of Utah, the stairstep "U-T-A-H" from the inaugural uniforms, and a hockey stick. A tusk cuts through the "U" in another secondary logo on both sets of pants.

https://media.d3.nhle.com/image/private/t_ratio16_9-size40/dpr_2.0/f_png/prd/lvoknrhnxhtpwzes7wlb.png

The new identity honors and updates the inaugural one. It uses a new custom-designed typeface, Mammoth Sans, featuring a 10-degree forward slant to mirror Utah's mountainous terrain and angled crossbars on the "A" and "H" to link to the inaugural lettering system.

The uniforms keep the same striping design and color scheme -- black at home, white on the road -- but the players' numbers will be in Mammoth Sans. Inside the collar of both jerseys, it will say, "EST. 2024."

A limited selection of first-round Mammoth merchandise will go on sale at the team store at Delta Center at 2 p.m. ET, including hats, hoodies and T-shirts. Items will be available next week at NHLShop.com.

Home jerseys will be ready for the prospects at the 2025 Upper Deck NHL Draft at L.A. Live's Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Utah holds the No. 4 pick in the first round June 27 (7 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, TVAS) after winning the second draw and moving up 10 spots in the NHL Draft Lottery on Monday. Rounds 2-7 will be June 28 (Noon ET; NHLN, ESPN+, SN, SN1).

Jerseys will be available to the public when the rest of the NHL's jerseys are released before the 2025-26 season.

{coyotes} Moving up 4th in the NHL draft in the lottery adds to the Utah Hockey Club’s exciting summer

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

When the Utah Hockey Club selected Tij Iginla with the sixth pick and took 10 other players in the first draft since the team moved to Salt Lake City, fans were excited, thinking they would be in the NHL right away.

General manager Bill Armstrong tried to temper expectations, telling them, "No, it takes some time." After an unexpected victory off the ice Monday night in the draft lottery, the expectations for the club's future are Rocky Mountain high once again.

Utah won the second random draw of lottery balls to move up from the 14th pick to No. 4, adding to an already momentous summer that could feature a free agent spending spree with tons of salary cap space and an owner not afraid to spend money, the first phase of massive arena renovations taking place and the full-time name getting unveiled before next season.

"It's a game-changer for us," Armstrong said on a post-lottery video call with reporters. "These are exciting times for Utah. ... Just great stuff for the franchise. I can't express in words on the excitement of when that happened and the opportunity in front of us."

Armstrong has over $22 million in room, and with Ryan Smith's ownership group in charge, there's every indication Utah can spend to the annually increasing cap. That was never the case under a procession of penny-pinching owners over the past decade as the Arizona Coyotes.

Utah committed $80 million-plus in player salaries this past season, and Smith Entertainment Group along with the city are investing plenty to upgrade downtown Delta Center and increase the capacity of full-ice views to over 16,000 for hockey in an arena initially designed and built primarily for basketball for the NBA's Jazz.

"We are excited for the challenge as we kick off this never-before-done renovation project," Ryan and wife Ashley Smith said last week. "This transformation will create the most compelling, welcoming and exciting experience for hockey fans, while also allowing us to maintain the steep vertical seating for basketball that has made Delta Center such a dynamic venue."

And, possibly soon, a venue for playoff hockey. Utah was in the race until the final few weeks of the season before finishing seven points out of the second and final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

"We were a pretty good team that chased it down the stretch playing meaningful games and chasing a playoff spot," Armstrong said. "We're getting to that point where we're becoming a really good team that's going to have a chance to get into the playoffs."

Not counting the expanded pandemic playoffs in 2020, this organization has not qualified since 2012. The building blocks to end that decade-plus drought are there, from captain Clayton Keller and 2022 No. 3 pick and budding star Logan Cooley to two-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev — acquired at the draft last year — and top goaltender Karel Vejmelka.

And after drafting a league-high 42 players over the past four years, there might be a temptation to use the fourth pick for immediate help, like someone who is established but still young and entering or in his prime.

"That's something that obviously we'll always talk about," Armstrong said. "We'll never shut that door. That's always been an avenue for us to get players, and we're at the position right now as a team where we're trying to make that next step, so we'll always look at that. That's part of the process."

The final step in the naming process is happening, too. The finalists have been narrowed down to Mammoth, Outlaws and Utah Hockey Club, complete with a permanent logo and new jerseys.

If the branding process goes as swimmingly as the first year with Smith's group in charge, the results on the business side could even exceed the hockey progress.

"They made a lot of promises, and they exceeded them with what they accomplished in a short period of time," Commissioner Gary Bettman said last week at a meeting of Associated Press Sports Editors in New York. "What they accomplished is a testament to Ryan and everybody out there. They dreamed big and they accomplished everything they needed to do, and we're thrilled to have them in the league. It's been an incredibly positive experience, and the players love it, too."

More high-quality players are coming next year and into the future, though Armstrong cautioned that the lottery doesn't speed up the building process and, "One pick's not going to change our franchise." But that doesn't dull the internal excitement.

"You've got a chance to get a real game-changer," Armstrong said. "We're going to have the opportunity to pick a real good player high in the draft and take a big swing here."

{coyotes} Report: NHL to hold international event in place of 2026 All-Star Weekend

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The NHL is planning an international event at UBS Arena next February in lieu of the previously announced All-Star Weekend at the home of the New York Islanders, a person with knowledge of the situation said Monday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced its plans for the weekend before the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

Commissioner Gary Bettman has said on multiple occasions recently that the league has been rethinking what to do about the event after the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off international tournament earlier this year. The thought was always to use New York as a jumping off point for Milan, with players leaving from there to participate in the Olympics for the first time since 2014.

"We know we've set the bar high, which should be a good thing, not a problem," Bettman said last week at a meeting of Associated Press Sports Editors in New York. "We're going to make sure we do something. ... We'll have an event at UBS before we go to the Olympics. But then we'll do something that's more focused on a major hockey event for the following year."

At his news conference wrapping up the general managers' annual spring meeting last month, Bettman said: "We're reevaluating how we want to do things because I think we've raised the bar about as high as you can for an all-star game in any sport. And so we want to make sure whatever we do is up to the standards that we've created."

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday she wrote a letter to Bettman expressing her disappointment about the decision to hold a Winter Olympics kickoff event in place of All-Star Weekend, adding it was made without consulting with the state and requesting the league "bring a hockey event with equal or greater economic activity and cultural value to the region in 2027."

That could quite easily be an All-Star Weekend or something of the sort at UBS Arena, since nothing else has been confirmed as of now. The 4 Nations tournament featuring teams representing the U.S., Canada, Sweden and Finland drawing sellout crowds and stellar ratings has the NHL considering different options for midseason festivities and even made the NBA contemplate doing something involving international play.
