{coyotes} 3 questions facing Utah Mammoth

1. Can Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther take another step?

Each forward made significant strides last season.

Cooley, the No. 3 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, had 65 points (25 goals, 40 assists) in his second season, up from 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists) as a rookie. Guenther, the No. 9 pick in 2021, had 60 points (27 goals, 33 assists) in his third season after having a combined 50 points (24 goals, 26 assists) in his first two.

They're part of a young core with Clayton Keller, who at age 27 has arrived as a top forward entering his 10th season. Keller had an NHL career-high 90 points (30 goals, 60 assists) last season, leading Utah and tied with Brandon Hagel (90 points; 35 goals, 55 assists) for 11th in the League.

Cooley, 21, and Guenther, 22, following Keller's trajectory could open a path to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"We've got a lot of young players who really had great years," general manager Bill Armstrong said. "There's not many NHL teams that can say they have the Cooleys and the Guenthers of the world, that young producing that amount of points. So, that's exciting."

2. How do they maintain the highs and minimize the lows?

Utah opened eyes in its inaugural season.

"I take it as a compliment when you run into the opposing GM going down the hallway and he's like, 'Oh, you guys are going to be good. You're not fun to play against,'" Armstrong said.

There were plenty of examples. The Mammoth battled for a 5-4 shootout win at the Washington Capitals on Feb. 9. On Feb. 27, they capped a three-game winning streak by defeating the Minnesota Wild 6-1. And Utah was 6-2-2 in its final 10 games.

But too much went the other way. There was a 7-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on March 18, a 5-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on March 24 and an 8-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 27.

The Mammoth can't afford to be that erratic again.

"I think, for us, when we're on, we're one of the top teams in the League," Cooley said. "When we're not, it's pretty ugly. So, I think finding consistency and finding ways to make sure we have it every night, finding ways to play the right way. Can't let games slip."

3. How does JJ Peterka fit with the core?

Peterka was acquired in a trade from the Buffalo Sabres on June 26 for defenseman Michael Kesselring and forward Josh Doan.

At 23 years old, he's another young forward Utah could slot into the top two lines. Last season, his fourth in the NHL, Peterka had a career-high 68 points (27 goals, 41 assists).

Fully meshing might take some time. Once he does, Peterka could be a necessary piece to a potentially dynamic offense.

"He'll take baby steps," Armstrong said, "getting here and learning to play our system and getting used to Utah, and everything about it and his new teammates. But he's a kid, he wants to win, he's a competitor."

{coyotes} Top prospects for Utah Mammoth

1. Caleb Desnoyers, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 4 pick in 2025 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Moncton (QMJHL): 56 GP, 35-49-84

Desnoyers (6-foot-2, 178 pounds) seems to be a perfect fit for the Mammoth, who have surrounded their skilled young playmakers with plenty of size. He just happens to have both.

The 18-year-old is coming off a breakout season, capped with 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in 19 postseason games to help Moncton win the Gilles-Courteau Trophy in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.

"He's got a little bit of everything that we want," Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said. "He's got the skill. He's got the high hockey IQ. And he's someone that led his team down the stretch to a championship as a 17-year-old. That's hard to do."

More progress will need to wait. Desnoyers is expected to be out 12 weeks after having wrist surgery in mid-August, forcing him to miss the start of the season.

It also hasn't been decided where he'll play. Desnoyers could go back to Moncton or could play NCAA hockey since he hasn't signed an NHL entry-level contract.

Projected NHL arrival: 2027-28

2. Tij Iginla, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 6 pick in 2024 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Kelowna (WHL): 21 GP, 14-18-32

Iginla (6-0, 182), the son of Hockey Hall of Fame forward Jarome Iginla, is looking to return from having double hip surgery. He had his right hip worked on in December before his left hip was done the next month.

The 19-year-old participated in Utah's development camp this offseason but wore a non-contact jersey. He said he expected to be back to full skating and contact within a month of the end of that camp.

Iginla signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Utah on July 11, 2024, before missing most of the ensuing training camp because of a lower-body injury. He now wants to make an impression at the upcoming camp in September.

"Just through the summer, just keep getting stronger, more powerful, all that stuff from a weight-room side of things," Iginla said on June 29. "Keep honing my skills on the ice and then just go into camp as ready as I can and try to give myself the best chance that I can to make the team."

Projected NHL arrival: Next season

3. Dmitriy Simashev, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 6 pick in 2023 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (KHL): 56 GP, 6-1-5

Simashev (6-4, 198) is a bruising, yet skilled defenseman that could quickly adapt to the NHL.

At 20 years old, he's accustomed to pro hockey with three seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Utah on May 28 after finishing his contract with Lokomotiv.

Simashev could start with Tucson of the American Hockey League but can earn a promotion this season.

"He might be the biggest (defenseman) I've ever drafted," Armstrong said. "He can cover ground. He's one of the best skaters. He works at his game. He's extremely good on the (defensive) side of the puck. And there's some room for him to grow offensively too."

Projected NHL arrival: This season

4. Daniil But, F

How acquired: Selected with No. 12 pick in 2023 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (KHL): 54 GP, 9-19-28

Simashev's teammate with Lokomotiv, But (6-5, 203) also signed a three-year, entry-level contract on May 28.

The 20-year-old is a towering forward, currently learning how to use his size while transitioning to North America. Adjusting shouldn't take long. Armstrong said But's style fits the NHL.

Whether that lands him a role in Utah will be determined at training camp.

Projected NHL arrival: This season

5. Maveric Lamoureux, D

How acquired: Selected with No. 29 pick in 2022 NHL Draft

2024-25 season: Utah (NHL): 15 GP, 1-2-3; Tucson (AHL): 42 GP, 2-11-13

Continuing with the theme of size, Lamoureux (6-6, 196) is another obviously large human.

The 21-year-old got a taste of the NHL early last season, playing his 15 games with the Mammoth from Oct. 24-Nov. 26. He scored his first NHL goal against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 30.

But Lamoureux sustained an upper-body injury in late November, ending the stint with Utah. He played the rest of his season in Tucson.

Another shot at the NHL could come soon, whether it's to start the season or after a recall.

Projected NHL arrival: This season

{coyotes} Inside look at Utah Mammoth

--
banners Puppybear.tv - Rakuten.ca - Amazon.com - Swagbucks - MyPoints - DailyRewards

The Utah Mammoth are developing -- as an organization, as a team, as a group of mostly young players.

Their inaugural season laid groundwork. The Mammoth (38-31-13) became part of the sports fabric in Utah but finished sixth in the Central Division.

This season, that won't be considered enough.

"We've got bigger aspirations of getting in (the Stanley Cup Playoffs)," general manager Bill Armstrong said, "and you're going to see that right away."

They already have some of the right pieces.

Clayton Keller, 27, led Utah with 90 points (30 goals, 60 assists) last season. Logan Cooley, 21, had 65 points (25 goals, 40 assists) in his second season. Dylan Guenther, 22, was fourth with 60 points (27 goals, 33 assists), behind 29-year-old forward Nick Schmaltz (63 points; 20 goals, 43 assists).

"I'm super excited about our group," said Keller, the Mammoth captain. "So confident in our guys, our prospects. We just have a great mold and mix of guys that all love being around each other. Everyone's like a family on our team."

But Utah averaged 2.93 goals last season, tied with the New Jersey Devils for 20th in the League.

"Everything can always be better," president of hockey operations Chris Armstrong said. "How can we be 10 percent better in every area? How can everybody, as individuals, get 10 percent better in this offseason?"

Bringing in forward JJ Peterka might help. The 23-year-old, who had an NHL career-high 68 points (27 goals, 41 assists) last season, was acquired in a trade from the Buffalo Sabres on June 26 and signed a five-year, $38.5 million contract.

"If you look at his points last year, he's roughly around what Cooley was," Bill Armstrong said. "So, he's got an opportunity to come in and have an impact on our top two lines. I think it's something that he can grow into."

Defenseman Nate Schmidt and forward Brandon Tanev could add a veteran presence. Schmidt signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract on July 1 after winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers. Tanev agreed to a three-year, $7.5 million contract the same day. Schmidt, 34, and Tanev, 33, would only be younger than defenseman Ian Cole, 36, on the Utah roster.

Goalie Vitek Vanecek signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract on July 1. He could battle with Connor Ingram, who was cleared by the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on Aug. 20, to back up Karel Vejmelka, the presumptive No. 1.

"I think, in the big picture, what we did today was tidy up the loose ends and make us a stronger team. I think you're going to see that come training camp," Bill Armstrong said on July 1. "Now, we've signed some free agents that are going to come in and push with our core. It's going to be probably the most competitive team we've had so far and it will be the most competitive camp we've ever had here. So, it's exciting times.

"People want to come here. They see the talent. They see what's going on in Utah. We always say, 'There's something special happening in Utah.' I think people in the free agency world can feel that."

Cooley, the youngest of the core forwards, is part of that feeling. But the No. 3 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft is entering the last of a three-year, entry-level contract. Guenther was in a similar position a year ago before signing an eight-year, $57.143 million contract on Sept. 20, 2024.

"It's a mutual thing that you get together with the player and the agent and get down to work," Bill Armstrong said. "There's a lot of comparables out there for a player like that, so we're looking forward to those talks. Obviously, he's a great young player in our organization. We've had success in getting the Dylan Guenther contract done.

"So, we'll definitely look at it and we'll update you as we move along in the summer. But there's certainly no rush at this point. There's other priorities. Not that Logan's not a huge priority, but it's just the way it rolls and we'll deal with it at some point in time in the summer."

To be fair, there are plenty of other young players to track.

Five more first-round picks could debut soon. Defenseman Dmitriy Simashev (No. 6) and forward Daniil But (No. 12) were selected in the 2023 NHL Draft. Forwards Tij Iginla (No. 6) and Cole Beaudoin (No. 24) were drafted in 2024. Forward Caleb Desnoyers was taken No. 4 in 2025.

The Mammoth aren't a finished product; far from it, probably. That doesn't mean they have to wait their turn.

"I embrace every stage because every stage brings a challenge, brings something to get you going," coach Andre Tourigny said. "You're chasing something, so there's challenge, important phases. It's an important stage. With that said, you do all of that for one reason -- to win. We want to win the Cup. That's what we want. Where are we in that stage? I will let you judge that."

{coyotes} Werenski, Patrick Kane invited to attend U.S. Olympic camp

Zach Werenski and Patrick Kane are among 44 NHL players invited to the United States' orientation camp that will decide its final 25-man roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 in February.

The camp will be held in Plymouth, Michigan, on Aug. 26 and 27.

Werenski was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, given to the NHL's top defenseman, after he had 82 points (23 goals, 59 assists) in 81 games last season for the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 28-year-old finished second in the voting behind Cale Makar (Colorado Avalanche).

Kane had 59 points (21 goals, 38 assists) in 72 games last season, his second with the Detroit Red Wings. The 36-year-old forward has 1,343 points (492 goals, 851 assists) in 1,302 regular-season games with the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and the Red Wings, and 138 points (53 goals, 85 assists) in 143 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He won the Cup three times with Chicago (2010, 2013, 2015).

The men's tournament will start with preliminary games Feb. 11, with the gold medal game scheduled for Feb. 22. This is the first time NHL players will participate in the Winter Olympics since Sochi in 2014.

In the Olympics, each team traditionally carries 14 forwards, eight defensemen and three goalies.

Six players were named to the U.S. roster June 16: Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews, Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel, Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk, Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes and Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy.

All 23 players who participated at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February will be at the camp with the exception of Matthew Tkachuk, who managed to help the Panthers win a second straight Stanley Cup championship despite sustaining a torn adductor muscle and sports hernia during the best-on-best tournament. The U.S. lost in overtime to Canada in the 4 Nations championship game on Feb. 20.

Among the invitees are three No. 1 picks in the NHL Draft, including Kane (2007), Matthews (2016) and Jack Hughes (2019).

Utah Mammoth prospect Caleb Desnoyers underwent wrist surgery and is expected to be out 12 weeks, the team announced on Thursday.

Desnoyers, 18, was selected fourth overall by the Mammoth in June's draft.

The 6-foot-2 centre played last season with the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League's Moncton Wildcats, finishing tied for fifth in league scoring with 35 goals and 84 points in 56 games.

He helped lead the Wildcats to the league's best record of 53-9-2 and went on to lead Moncton to a Gilles-Courteau Trophy as league champion and represented the QMJHL at the Memorial Cup.

Desnoyers finished second in playoff scoring with nine goals and 30 points in 19 games and won the Guy Lafleur Trophy as the QMJHL playoff MVP.

The Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., native was named as captain of the Wildcats in June, but has not made a decision about a possible jump to the NCAA or returning to the QMJHL.

Utah drafted Desnoyers after finishing last season with a 38-31-13 record and moving up 10 spots in the draft lottery in order to select him fourth overall.
