A U.S. federal mediator met with the NHL Players' Association this morning and will do so again later today before recommending if more labour talks with the NHL should take place.
If the mediator concludes that a deal is close, then he will suggest the meeting between the two sides.
Both the NHL and NHLPA met separately in Woodbridge, N.J. on Wednesday with mediators Scot L. Beckenbaugh and John Sweeney. However, the two sides did not meet with each other directly.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that a few players remain, but some have also left the New York-New Jersey area on Thursday.
"We did several different caucus meeting rooms, and really there's nothing new to report," said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly following the afternoon session on Wednesday. "We don't have a conclusion to the process."
"There were discussions of the various issues involved and how far apart we are and where we go from here. I can't tell you that any progress was made," added NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr.
The lockout is now into its 89th day, with all regular season games cancelled through Dec. 30.
