Donald Fehr spoke on Saturday about the current state of the NHL lockout as the stalemate reached its 84th day.
The executive director of the NHL Players' Association addressed a meeting of Canadian Auto Workers union delegates in Toronto.
The comments were Fehr's first since the NHL-NHLPA talks broke up on a sour note in New York late Thursday after the league rejected the Players' latest offer.
No new talks are scheduled between the two sides.
As Fehr was speaking, Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler tweeted, "Under Don's leadership we are confident that a deal will be finalized with the League assuming we have a willing partner. Don's leadership of the PA has never been stronger."
The league has cancelled games through Dec. 14. It's expected that the remainder of December's games will be taken off the schedule, possibly on Monday.
"I have no reason, nor any intention, of reaching out to the union right now," said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly in an email to The Associated Press on Friday. "I have no new ideas. Maybe they do. We are happy to listen.
