{coyotes} Coyotes rally, beat Oilers in overtime

Chemistry.com Chemistry.com

GLENDALE Ariz. - Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle has endured a few sleepless nights in the days leading up to the selection of the United States' roster for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He used Tuesday night to make a final impression.

Yandle scored two goals, including the game-winner with 6.5 seconds left in overtime, and set up the game-tying goal by Mikkel Boedker with 1:10 left in regulation as the Coyotes roared by from another multi-goal deficit and beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 Tuesday night.

"I've lost a bit of sleep thinking about this. I really want to be a part of Team USA and I think I've shown I've played my best to show what I can bring to the team," said Yandle, who has 27 points in 39 games.

"Antoine Vermette said the other day, 'It's your last day to showcase.' I don't know how much of the team has been picked or whatever it is. All I can do is hope I get the call now. It would be such an honor."

The Coyotes have played a franchise-record six straight overtime games, winning for just the second time during that run. But their dominance of Edmonton continues: Phoenix is 14-1-2 in its past 17 games against the Oilers, including 3-0-0 this season.

After Phoenix killed a penalty in overtime, Yandle took the puck from Edmonton's Jordan Eberle in his own zone, raced down the ice and with the puck on edge and Anton Belov on his back, he floated a shot over ex-Coyote Ilya Bryzgalov to ring in the New Year on a happy note for an overflow crowd of 17,416 at Jobing.com Arena.

"I don't know if it worked out for my benefit to have to beat that puck down the whole way. When you get that close to the net you just want to get anything at it and I was able to get it in the air," said Yandle, who was robbed on two other occasions when he tested Bryzgalov low to the glove side. "We know what a good goalie Bryz is from his time here. He made huge saves for them and he kept their team in there early when we were all over the net."

Taylor Hall assisted on all three Edmonton goals, by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, David Perron and Justin Schultz. Bryzgalov had been 9-2-0 against the Coyotes with a 1.96 goals-against average and 2-0-0 since he left after the 2010-11 season. But his 40 saves wasn't enough this time.

"Bryz played so well for us tonight and for us to let him down like that it isn't great," Hall said. "We need to make sure when a goalie plays like that for us he ends up getting the win."

The Coyotes have 14 points this season in games where they have trailed by two or more goals, the most in the NHL. And three nights after rallying from 2-0 down in Anaheim to steal a point against the Ducks, Phoenix was back in a familiar hole down 3-1 in the second period to take the steam out of the New Year's Eve crowd.

"We would much rather win in regulation, that's for sure," said Phoenix coach Dave Tippett after his team won for just the second time in eight home games after a 9-0-1 start in Glendale. "We talk about scratching and clawing, doing everything you can to get points in the regular season. Some games are a little more character-building than others."

Struggling Phoenix goalie Mike Smith was chased after allowing three goals on 10 shots and has won three of his last 14 starts (3-6-5). Backup Thomas Greiss stopped all 15 shots he faced in relief, and was off the ice for a sixth attacker when Yandle returned a pass from Boedker to force overtime - again.

The Coyotes dominated the first period, but didn't have much to show for it. Phoenix had 10 shots in the first four minutes and 21 for the period, four shy of the franchise record. But Bryzgalov kept the Oilers in the game with a variety of saves.

"Terrible period," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "We stood around and watched them play."

Phoenix broke through at 10:59 when Yandle ran down his own errant pass, curled into the right circle and beat Bryzgalov over the blocker with a wrist shot. Yandle extended his point streak to three games.

The Coyotes kept firing away, but after going without a shot for more than 14 minutes, Edmonton got even on an innocent-looking play. Hall walked the puck out of the corner but lost it off his stick. Nugent-Hopkins picked it up and, with his back to the net, slid a backhander that trickled through Smith at 18:50 for his 11th goal.

Edmonton looked much sharper at the start of the second period. On the first shift, Hall found Perron behind Phoenix defenseman Connor Murphy and put a 100-foot pass right on his tape. Perron beat Smith cleanly with a wrist shot to the stick side for his 17th goal of the season and fourth in three games against the Coyotes.

Hall got his third point at 6:44 when he curled inside the Phoenix blue line and hit Schultz in the slot for a shot that beat Smith between the pads for his fourth goal -- and the Oilers had the Coyotes on their heels.

Smith, who had been 7-0-1 against the Oilers since coming to the Coyotes, was pulled for Greiss.

"The first period wasn't great at all but we managed to find our game and get the lead," Hall said. "Our line is playing well, We were in their end a lot. We did a lot of good things but it's all for nothing."

The Coyotes got within 3-2 at 12:05 when Bryzgalov came off the left post just enough for Tim Kennedy's shot from beyond to goal line to bank off his skate and squeeze inside the left post.

It stayed that way until the Coyotes pulled Greiss and scored with a sixth attacker for the second straight game. Boedker pushed the puck to Yandle, who carried the puck to the goal line before passing back to Boedker, who hit an open net for his 11th goal, matching his career high.

{coyotes} OILERS (13-24-4) at COYOTES (19-10-9)

OILERS (13-24-4) at COYOTES (19-10-9)

TV: SNET-EDM, FS-A

Last 10: Edmonton 3-6-1; Phoenix 3-2-5

Season series: This is the third of five games between these new Pacific Division rivals. The Phoenix Coyotes won the first two and are 13-2-2 overall against the Edmonton Oilers under coach Dave Tippett.

Big story: The Coyotes and Oilers will look to get a jump on their New Year's resolutions Tuesday at Jobing.com Arena. Phoenix kicks off a season-long six-game homestand, and Edmonton starts a three-game road swing.

The Coyotes are still in playoff position in eighth place in the Western Conference, but have fallen to fifth in the highly competitive Pacific with losses in six of seven. Phoenix has gone beyond regulation in five straight games, losing four.

The Oilers will be looking for at least a point in their fourth straight game.

Team Scope:

Oilers: Edmonton has endured an up-and-down season, with the downs lasting longer than the ups. Right now, the Oilers are trending upward with points in three straight. However, they have one road victory against a team currently holding a playoff spot, a 4-3 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 22, after 22 games in opponents' buildings.

Edmonton will play three straight road games against teams currently in playoff positions beginning Tuesday. The Oilers should bring some confidence to the road swing after outscoring their past three opponents 11-5 in going 2-0-1. Edmonton beat the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames before losing to the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in a shootout Saturday.

Former Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov made 35 saves Saturday, and Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist to help push the game to a shootout.

Nail Yakupov will be a healthy scratch for Edmonton on Tuesday, and Roman Horak will make his Oilers debut.

Coyotes: As the race to the postseason heats up, the games get tighter and two points are harder to grasp. This has been especially true for the Coyotes, who have played beyond 60 minutes for five straight games (1-0-4). The five-game stretch includes losses against the NHL's worst team, the Buffalo Sabres, and the League's best, the Anaheim Ducks.

"That's five games in a row in overtime [and] we have only got one extra point, so that's a little disappointing," coach Dave Tippett said.

Down 2-0 late in the third period against Anaheim on Saturday, the Coyotes scored twice in the final 4:34 to force overtime. It was the second time in two nights the Coyotes erased late deficits. On Friday, Radim Vrbata scored in the final minutes to help push the San Jose Sharks to the shootout.

"I like the way our guys hung in there and battled," Tippett said. "Like a number of times this year, we found a way to scratch points out of situations that looked a little bleak. We'll take the point and move on."

Who's hot: Hall has five points the past three games for Edmonton. … Coyotes leading scorer Mike Ribeiro scored the tying goal Saturday against Anaheim, and has three points (one goal) his past two games. Ribeiro had three points in the most-recent game against Edmonton.

Injury report: Oilers center Mark Arcobello (ribs) is closing in on a return after missing five games, but he's still day-to-day. Defenseman Corey Potter (groin), defenseman Philip Larsen (illness) and left wing Ryan Jones (head) are out. … Coyotes captain Shane Doan (illness) skated with the team Monday, but remains on injured reserve. Defenseman Rostislav Klesla (illness) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (lower body) remain out. The Coyotes recalled forward Chris Brown from Portland of the American Hockey League on Monday.

Crash My Party - Luke Bryan

Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan practiced with his teammates for a full hour Monday at Jobing.com Arena.

Doan last played Dec. 4 and has been out of the lineup with an illness that was diagnosed as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

There is currently no timetable for his return to the lineup.

When the diagnosis was first announced earlier this month, Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said Doan was taking medication and considered week-to-week.

Doan, in his 18th NHL season, has 12 goals and 23 points in 27 games.

Great news everyone for all your efforts. I was able to say a little prayer asking God to keep everyone safe while on the search.
Doesn't it give you a feeling of gratitude that you were all tuned in to a single frequency and that frequency was to find him.
Way to go WM7RC. Terry nk7t.

I wish to thank the 138 community volunteers, the HAM Radio operators,
the flying wing club and bicyclists that came out today to assist this
family with the search efforts for their son Jophrey. Because of your
numbers and dedication of a long day we were able to clear several miles
of desert, eliminate possible foot prints, search several abandoned
structures and houses, make contact with many businesses and residence
in the area. The family has now identified another possible shoe print
that has been located within the neighborhood. They are also working on
a mass flyer campaign and could use assistance in getting them posted in
high traffic areas. I am confident because of the love and care of this
community that he will return home soon. God bless you all.

Good news everyone. I just received a call from Jophrey's Dad and he was

{coyotes} Coyotes will vouch for Yandle's Olympic credentials

Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle has stated his case for a spot on the United States roster at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Since the previous NHL Olympic season in 2009-10, Yandle has 154 points in 166 regular-season games and 14 points in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Between the 2009-10 season and the current one he was a combined plus-32. He has played in two NHL All-Star Games and is a main reason the Coyotes reached the Western Conference Final in 2012.

Yandle stands fifth among active American-born NHL defensemen with 57 goals and 182 assists in 449 games. Only four American defensemen -- Paul Martin, Ryan Whitney (not currently on an NHL roster), Dustin Byfuglien and Ryan Suter, who leads all active American-born blueliners with 292 points in 629 games -- are ahead of Yandle.

The Boston native once again is leading Phoenix defensemen with 22 points in 36 games this season and is a main reason why the Coyotes, despite hovering around .500 the past month, still hold a playoff spot in the tight Western Conference standings entering their game Friday against the San Jose Sharks.

Yet for some reason Yandle apparently is not a lock to make the U.S. roster and his teammates can't understand why.

USA Hockey will announce its Olympic roster on Wednesday following the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic (1 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS).

"He's a tremendous player and he definitely deserves to be on that team," said Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, who is vying for a spot on the Canadian Olympic roster. "I'm glad I have him on my team because I wouldn't want to play against him more often than maybe in the Olympics or World Championship.

"He gets plenty of attention on our team. [Yandle] is just a special player. We're fortunate to have him and [defenseman Oliver] Ekman-Larsson. They're two guys that can really carry the puck and are unbelievable at moving their feet. Most teams are begging for one of those types of guys and we're very fortunate to have two. [Yandle] has been a big part of this team on the ice and in the dressing room where he's a big part of our leadership group. We love having him."

Coyotes coach Dave Tippett recently described Yandle as a dynamic player that has the ability to change the momentum of a game in an instant.

"There will be a game going on with not much happening and all of a sudden he can make something happen," Tippett said. "That dynamic element coming from your blue line in today's NHL is something you need to make yourselves successful. He's grown into a better two-way player. He was always a good offensive player but he does it on both ends now and he still has that element to change a game on one play and he's a very valuable player for us."

One player that has played a role not only in helping Yandle develop into a well-rounded defenseman but also a leader in the Coyotes dressing room is veteran defenseman Derek Morris. Morris has watched Yandle grow from a raw offensive talent and eager rookie to a solid two-way defenseman now doing some mentoring of his own with current Coyotes rookie defenseman Connor Murphy, who Yandle has been paired with for much of this season.

"I think [Yandle] came into the League … just happy to be there," Morris said. "One thing is that [Yandle] is a very respectful kid. He respects all the guys ahead of him and listens to what they have to say. Obviously there isn't much we can teach him offensively, but with little tricks of the trade that guys can teach him he's always willing to learn them. He's getting older now and he has a new kid playing with him and he's passing it on to him. I think he's one of the reasons our team is successful and is a leader in our room that makes it fun to come to the rink every day."

After mentoring Yandle for almost three full seasons (2006-09) Morris was dealt to the New York Rangers at the 2009 trade deadline and moved on the following season to the Boston Bruins. When he became a Coyote again, traded back to Phoenix at the 2010 trade deadline, he saw a much more mature and calmer defenseman in his former defense partner.

"Just how much more of a difference he made in a game," Morris said of Yandle. "When he first came into the League he'd make a difference but you wouldn't notice it as much. Now he's relied upon to make a difference every single night and he does. His consistency level is up. His defensive-zone play is way better than anybody gives him credit for. And while everybody thinks you need to be all bang and crash to be a solid defenseman, he reminds me of Nick Lidstrom because he has a great stick and when he pokes it away from you he's already going the other way on offense. The best offense is always a good defense, as they always say."

That's why Morris is really hoping USA Hockey realizes what a balanced defenseman they'd be getting were they to put him on the 2014 Olympic roster.

"I sure hope so," Morris said. "He's the reason our team has a chance to win every single game and he'd be a great addition to any team."

Morris was asked why he thought Yandle is on the bubble to make the U.S. team and not a lock with the likes of Suter or other more popular U.S.-born defensemen.

"It's a good question," Morris said. "Obviously where we are we don't get the media coverage a lot of teams do. But anyone that plays in the West will know who Yandle is. He's a very dynamic player and very exciting to play with and watch, but not against."

Should USA Hockey decide to put Yandle on their blue line, the 27-year old said he would be honored to represent his country on the grandest of international stages.

"It's special, for sure," Yandle said. "I don't know if it's because you get used to wearing your own NHL jersey -- and that's special too -- but the USA jersey is unique. You don't wear the red, white and blue every day, and when you do it's very special and a proud moment."

As described in my latest book "309thAMARG(MASDC IV)" available at www.amarc.info, 79-0182 is just a pile of wreckage and so where is it dumped would be a more apt question. As far as I am aware the wreckage is at the South end of Area 20 up against the fence, East of the MiGs.

{coyotes} Koivu's OT goal gives Ducks 10th straight win

ANAHEIM -- High-scoring games, low-scoring games, come-from-behind wins. The Anaheim Ducks' winning streak has taken on all forms, and the latest had Saku Koivu's veteran skill all over it.

Koivu's goal 51 seconds into overtime gave Anaheim a 3-2 win against the Phoenix Coyotes, and the Ducks extended a franchise record with their 10th consecutive win, the NHL's longest streak since the Pittsburgh Penguins won 15 in a row last March.

The Ducks remained the only team without a regulation loss at home (14-0-2).

Koivu tipped a shot by Ben Lovejoy, who took a pass from Cam Fowler at the top of the slot and snapped it on net. Koivu won a faceoff to start the possession that led to his second goal of the game, giving him 251 in his NHL career.

"Those tips there, they're more luck than anything else," Koivu said. "You try to get open and try to get your stick in there and try to get in front of the goaltender, and we got lucky on that one."

Anaheim, which trailed 2-0 in its previous game (against the Washington Capitals on Monday), took the opposite route to this win. Phoenix erased a 2-0 deficit with 4:34 left in regulation on goals by Martin Hanzal and Mike Ribeiro.

The Ducks regrouped and rode Koivu's line and goaltender Jonas Hiller, who tied a Ducks record with his eighth straight win (Viktor Fasth, Jan. 26-Feb. 16, 2013). Anaheim's last regulation loss was Nov. 26 (6-3 to the Dallas Stars), and coach Bruce Boudreau didn't downplay the significance of the streak.

"I think it's neat," Boudreau said. "Anytime you can get to be part of something that nobody else has done, I think it's a special occasion. I don't make light of it. I think No. 10 is magic when you get into streaks, because it doesn't happen very often."

Hiller made 23 saves, and each goal he allowed was forgivable.

The Coyotes pulled goalie Thomas Greiss for an extra attacker, and Mike Ribeiro got his stick on Keith Yandle's slap shot from the right side that made it through traffic at 19:16 to stun the announced standing-room crowd of 17,442.

Hanzal put a rolling puck into an open net after an odd dump-in carom at 4:34. Hiller came out to play the puck and got back to get the paddle of his stick on the shot but could not stop it. The goal was upheld by video review.

Greiss, starting in place of Mike Smith, made 38 saves against one of the League's best offensive teams. The bulk of his work came with 29 saves through two periods. He helped the Coyotes withstand two effective Ducks power plays in a 16-shot second by Anaheim because of roughing and tripping penalties by Yandle and Radim Vrbata, respectively.

"He saw a lot of shots and he made a lot of saves," Yandle said of Greiss. "If you look at all their goals, it was tough saves. Not a lot of guys would have that. He did his job. We have to find a way to help him out a little more."

So much of Anaheim's streak has been about its top line, but on this night the Ducks needed Koivu's shutdown line to alleviate the scoring pressure.

Andrew Cogliano made a deft redirect to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead 5:04 into the third period. Daniel Winnik's pass might have deflected off a Coyotes player before a streaking Cogliano got his stick on it; Greiss had little chance on the play.

Koivu's first goal came shorthanded to finish off a sharp first period by Anaheim, which showed no rust from a four-day break. Koivu cut across to the left circle and, unpressured, took a short backswing and fired near the wall to beat Greiss stick side at 17:08.

Koivu said he's in a good place after he missed 15 games this season with a concussion.

"I think [250 is] a good number, but when you play with guys like Teemu [Selanne] on your team, and he has almost 700 goals, you kind of forget that," Koivu said. "But it's nice. I guess I'm not known for scoring goals, and it's a fairly good number, and I'll take it.

"After the concussion, there were a few games that kind of took me to get, not so much physically, but just the mental part of the game, to feel comfortable, and now I'm starting to get some results, and it's a good sign."

Phoenix saw its four-game point streak end (1-0-3) and is 3-3-4 without captain Shane Doan, out with Rocky Mountain fever. The Coyotes played their fifth straight overtime game and were coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

"It was a real tough turnaround with days off and then playing two games in less than 24 hours, so I give our guys credit for hanging in there, and we managed to salvage a point," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said.

"That's five games in a row in overtime [and] we have only got one extra point, so that's a little disappointing."

Anaheim's power play fell to 0-for-20 over seven games after it went empty on three tries, although it had good puck movement and scoring chances. Its next chance will come Sunday at San Jose, but the Ducks allowed themselves to recognize 10 straight wins.

"The League is so competitive … we've been able to find ways to win games," Koivu said. "There's been a few that we've been down by a few goals but found ways to win the games and get the goals that we needed. Even though we know there's a lot of good things, we've got to find a bit more consistency when things are going well to push it a little more, but 10 wins is not easy and it's something that we can build on."

COYOTES (19-10-8) at DUCKS (27-7-5)

TV: KTVK, KDOC

Last 10: Phoenix 3-3-4; Anaheim 9-0-1

Season series: The Anaheim Ducks have won the first three of their five games against the Phoenix Coyotes, including two at Honda Center.

Big story: The NHL's hottest team comes home after sweeping a four-game swing through the East. A victory against Phoenix will give Anaheim the first 10-game winning streak in its history.

Team Scope:

Coyotes: Ten years after opening Jobing.com Arena with a loss to the Nashville Predators on Dec. 27, 2003, Phoenix did a little better Friday. The Coyotes didn't win, but the 4-3 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks did earn them a much-needed point, enough to move into Stanley Cup Playoff position in the Western Conference.

"We were up, we were down, we battled back, and when you get to the shootout anything can happen," said forward David Moss, who scored two of the Coyotes' goals. "We're playing a lot of close games and you'd like to get the two points, but we're right around it."

Ducks: Anaheim is playing tag with the Chicago Blackhawks in the race for the NHL's best record. Chicago has 60 points, one more than the Ducks, but Anaheim has a game in hand. Another advantage for the Ducks is the schedule: 26 of their remaining 43 games are at Honda Center, where they've taken home 28 of 30 possible points.

The Ducks' nine-game winning streak is two games longer than the previous franchise record.

"We've got to continue to improve, and get better," coach Bruce Boudreau told the media after practice Friday. "If we continue to improve and get better, we're going to be fine. But if we stay the same, then we're not going to be fine, because the last half of the year the better teams always get better. That's why the hockey in March and April is so much better than it is in October. Our focus is on getting better."

Who's hot: Coyotes forward Radim Vrbata has a goal in two of the past three games. … Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf has five points in the past two games and leads the team with 44.

Injury report: Phoenix forward Shane Doan (illness) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (hip) are out. … Anaheim defensemen Luca Sbisa (hand) and Sheldon Souray (wrist), and goaltender Viktor Fasth (lower body) are out.
