Former Edmonton Oilers coach Ralph Krueger was named coach of Team Europe for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey on Wednesday.
Team Europe will draw players from those European countries outside of the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden.
Earlier Wednesday, German Ice Hockey Federation president Franz Reindl was named president/team leader for Team Europe and former NHL player and Slovakia team captain Miroslav Satan was named general manager.
The 2016 World Cup of Hockey will be held Sept. 17 to Oct. 1, 2016, at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Team Europe will be in Group A, along with Team Canada, Team Czech Republic and Team USA. Team Finland, Team Russia, Team Sweden and Team North America will be in Group B.
Krueger spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers and was promoted to replace Tom Renney as coach for the 2012-13 season. The Oilers went 19-22-7 and their 45 points placed them 12th in the Western Conference.
While his NHL coaching tenure was brief, Krueger has been a successful coach in Europe. He coached Switzerland at the World Championship 12 times and in the Olympics three times. He won a gold medal at a consultant for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
