Chris Pronger, who hasn't played in the NHL since November of 2011, took a physical examination in Glendale, Arizona this week, according to Sportsnet's Damien Cox.
He is required to take one each season in order to remain on long-term injured reserve. As he has each year before, Pronger failed the exam.
Pronger was traded to the Arizona Coyotes from the Philadelphia Flyers in June despite not having played for three consecutive seasons. The trade helped the Coyotes reach and maintain the salary cap floor while Pronger remains on LTIR. Nicklas Grossman was also dealt to Arizona in the deal while Sam Gagner and two conditional draft picks went to Philadelphia.
The 40-year-old last played in 2011 when he took a stick to his eye and later suffered from concussion symptoms.
He has yet to file his retirement papers.
