{coyotes} Coyotes get permission to interview Todd Nelson: report

The Arizona Coyotes have been granted permission by the Detroit Red Wings to interview Todd Nelson for their coaching vacancy, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

Dave Tippett agreed to leave as Coyotes coach after eight seasons on June 22.

Nelson, 48, has spent the past two seasons as coach of Grand Rapids, the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate. He took over for Jeff Blashill, who was named Detroit coach on June 9, 2015.

Grand Rapids won the 2017 Calder Cup in Nelson's second season, defeating Syracuse in six games. Nelson has been a coach in the AHL for seven seasons, making the Calder Cup Playoffs six times.

Nelson became the third person to win the Calder Cup as a player, assistant and coach, joining Bob Woods and Mike Stothers.

The Edmonton Oilers hired Nelson to coach their AHL affiliate in Oklahoma City on July 15, 2010. He spent five seasons in Oklahoma City before being promoted to Oilers coach on Dec. 15, 2014, after Dallas Eakins was fired. Edmonton went 17-25-9 in 51 games under Nelson.
