{coyotes} Goaltender Mike Smith acquired by Flames from Coyotes

Goaltender Mike Smith was acquired by the Calgary Flames in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday for goaltender Chad Johnson, college defenseman Brandon Hickey and a conditional second- or third-round draft pick in either the 2018 or 2019 NHL Draft.

Smith, 35, was 19-26-9 with a 2.92 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in 55 starts with the Coyotes this season. He has two years remaining on a six-year, $34 million contract (average annual value $5.67 million), according to CapFriendly.com.

If Calgary qualifies for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2017, the Coyotes will get the Flames' second-round choice in 2018 or 2019 NHL Draft (at Calgary's option). If Calgary doesn't qualify, the Coyotes will receive the Flames' third-round choice in 2018.

Smith had been linked to trade rumors, though general manager John Chayka recently told azcentral.com, "We're not looking to move him unless something makes sense that we can make our team better or build our team in a way that we think improves our club."

Smith's best season was in 2011-12, when he was 38-18-10 with a 2.21 GAA and .930 save percentage for the then-Phoenix Coyotes and helped them reach the Western Conference Final before losing to the Los Angeles Kings.

He is 195-198-60 in 474 games (438 starts) in 11 NHL seasons with the Coyotes, Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Flames general manager Brad Treliving has experience working with Smith; he was assistant GM of the Coyotes from 2003-14.

Johnson, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, was 18-15-1 with a 2.59 GAA and .910 save percentage in 36 games for the Flames this season, splitting time with Brian Elliott. He is 68-45-12 in 137 games (124 starts) during seven NHL seasons with the Flames, New York Rangers, Coyotes, Boston Bruins, New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres.

Hickey, Calgary's third-round pick (No. 64) in the 2014 NHL Draft, has spent the past three seasons at Boston University. He had 15 points (four goals,11 assists) in 35 games this season.
