{coyotes} Chychrun to miss start of training camp for Coyotes: report

Jakob Chychrun will not skate with the Arizona Coyotes for their first-on ice session of training camp Friday, The Athletic reported.

The 20-year-old defenseman injured his knee against the Calgary Flames on April 3 and had surgery the following week. He was cleared to skate Aug. 8 and will continue his rehab skating.

"We're not going to take on risk when it comes to returning to play," Coyotes general manager John Chayka told the website Wednesday. "He's back skating now and he will continue to progress along that timeline, but at the same time, there is no rush. It is going to go as quickly or slowly as it's going to go."

Chychrun also had knee surgery in August 2017 and missed the first 29 games last season.

"There's no date in my mind," Chayka said. "If I set a date, either he's going to continue to blow past it as he has his whole life with this stuff, or there might be a small setback, or we might get together as a group and say it's progressing well but let's hold him back in this area or that area to avoid risk."

Chychrun had 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) and averaged 20:15 of ice time in 50 games for the Coyotes last season. The No. 16 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, Chychrun has 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 118 NHL games.

"I'm ready to go," Chychrun said. "It's just a matter of when the team is comfortable with me being ready to go, but I'm not going to be upset with them taking their time."
