The NHL on Monday unveiled Records.NHL.com, the new home for official League records and history, including team and individual regular-season and Stanley Cup Playoff records, milestones, trophy and NHL Draft histories and more. The site's features are augmented by historic photography and video vignettes of classic moments in NHL history.
The site, which is dynamically updated multiple times per day, represents the next phase in the NHL's development of its historical statistical database. The NHL engaged in a multiyear project ahead of its 2017 Centennial celebration to compile game-by-game statistics from every game in NHL history, providing a complete statistical history of the League for the first time.
With Records.NHL.com, more of that history is available to fans, media and broadcasters than ever before.
The site replaces the NHL Official Guide & Record Book, an annual printed almanac of the League.
The site expands on the book's offerings, organizing records into logical and sortable categories, and presenting expanded lists of record holders. Unlike the book, it will update with each game's results to present the most current information.
"It can offer dynamic updating, whereas a book is a snapshot that is taken at the end of one season for the beginning of the next," said Dan Diamond, the former publisher of the Guide & Record Book. "Once the first games are played, players' statistical panels continue to evolve.
"That, in turn, ripples through the record book. One of the popular features in the printed Guide has been top-100s, top-100 all-time scorers ... These will be dynamically updated."
Links to player pages, box scores and team histories also offer greater depth with thousands of listings.
Without the space limitations of a printed book, record listings can be expanded from a handful of entries to hundreds or thousands. Many listings are also sortable, by date or record-holder's team, for example, to make the content more user-friendly.
"This would be a splendid upgrade for fans to be able to follow their interests down to a very fine-grain level," Diamond said.
"Our goal with Records.NHL.com is to continue to bring NHL fans closer to the game's history," said Russell Levine, the NHL's vice president of Statistics and Information. "Much of this material has never been available on NHL platforms before, and we are thrilled to continue to capitalize on the work that was done ahead of the Centennial."
Future enhancements to the site, which is available on desktop and mobile web, will include additional records and record categories, more photos and historic video, as well as search functionality. But for the first time, the NHL has all its official records dynamically tracked in one place.
"I think the book has served its double audience, that is the professional audience -- reporters and broadcasters and scouts and managers -- and fans as well who would buy it in bookstores or on line," Diamond said. "It has been a thrill and an honor to be involved in something that means a lot to people."
Other features of the site include:
-- All-time aggregated standings for regular season and playoffs, for all current and defunct franchises.
-- Extensive franchise history pages with sortable year-by-year records, all-time records against opponents, team and individual superlatives, all-time NHL Draft selections, current rosters, and all-time captains, coaches, general managers and retired numbers.
-- Historic photography of Stanley Cup winners, as well as extensive use of NHL historic team logos.
-- Sortable pick-by-pick history of the NHL Draft since 1963.
-- A register of NHL special events including All-Star games, outdoor games, regular-season games outside North America, Hockeyville and China Games.
-- Almanac-type information on yearly attendance, major rule changes, playoff formats, current officials, the Board of Governors and more.
