Re: [cactuswings 3959] REQ.INFO for San Bernadino AIirport.

The DL MD-90's at SBD (and ATL) that are missing their engines are in long-term storage while the engines are overhauled in New Zealand.  At last check there were only two scheduled to be parted-out to help keep the rest of the fleet alive long-term. The others are currently not showing in the system as being retired and are scheduled to return to the fleet.

I'll have to go back through some notes from a few months back to see which were the two (at that point) that were known to be the parts donors that won't be coming back.

Side notes:
The DL MD-88's at SBD, on the other hand, won't be coming back.  At this point, the determining factor for an MD-88 leaving the fleet is how close it is to being due for a heavy check.  This explains why those that have been parked over the last few months haven't been in any particular order with regard to registration nunbers.  It's all about timing for them these days.

There should be somewhere around 55 -88's that will remain in the fleet beyond 2020, and those are the birds that can last that long before they come up on their next heavy check.  Many of them have already had ADS-B and GPS installed, which is a requirement after January 2020, of course.  Those that remain are also being kept closer and closer to home (ATL or DTW) as time goes on. Currently it's around 700 miles, and that's dropping to 500 miles by the end of this year.

Several of the MD-90's have also had ADS-B installed, which is nothing more than a modified version of the same hardware used in the MD-88.  They're a slightly easier install as the -90's already have GPS.
