[cactuswings 2169] LOG - Las Vegas Area via LGB/VCV

SEA (4/4/2013)
There was a bit of interest at Sea-Tac on a murky midday.

Alaska Skywest     CR7           #218

…plus what I believe was the PAE-based Honeywell Convair 580 seen departing.

LGB (4/4/2013)
What an amazing airport!  Between the iconic Fly DC Jets sign, the C17 production, the Gulfstream facility, and the so-California new terminal (you can have a coffee outdoors in the sunshine behind security!), the airport reeks of aviation history.  I only had a minute to look around on arrival and a full log follows.

…plus lots of Gulfstream heavy bizjets and quite a few C-17s as well.

VCV (4/5/2013)
I was lucky enough to get a full behind-the-scenes look at the amazing airport at Victorville, the former George AFB.  There are a number of interesting facilities at the airport including a paint shop, a couple of airplane storage companies, an MRO, a training center, etc.  My time was brief but thorough, I asked for a few stops on our way through the birdfarm but within reason.  I noted mainly registrations and not liveries or airplane conditions so pardon any inconsistencies.  The only area where I didn't get a close-quarters look was the distant ramp with ex-Qantas 747s, Cargo 360 A310s, a Deta DC-10, an ex-KLM MD-11, and a Saudi L-1011 bizjet (amongst others).  Oh well.  What follows then is my full log, note that many FedEx aircraft had the "FE" painted out of their regs.

VGT (4/6/2013)

I made a first visit to North Las Vegas since 2008 and things looked dim (just a couple of aircraft parked at the Vision terminal) until I found Citizen Avenue which lead to the control tower and a gaggle of stored gems.  Incidentally, this airport is Dornier heaven with nearly 100% of the log - WOW!!!

At terminal
Vision              228  N402VA  "Vision of a Lifetime"
Vision              228  N409VA

Stored near control tower
Martinaire          228  N117DN

Martinaire          228  N265MC  missing parts, engineless
Martinaire          228  N269VA  "N69MC" on other side, due to mix/matched parts
Martinaire          228  N408VA  missing parts, engineless
Vision              328  N328VA  missing parts

LAS (4/6/2013)
It had been a long time since I'd driven around McCarran and I took the opportunity on this visit.  I found that the business jet & EG&G/Janet areas were pretty well locked down and getting tail numbers was a more frustrating exercise than I'd expected.  There were a few gems but it was hard work!  There were a lot of Allegiant aircraft parked up on the cargo ramp and I was able to read off many (not all) of them - one MD-80 was in the midst of an engine replacement.  Some of the aircraft at the international terminal can also be read off from parking areas near the cargo ramp.  Lastly, there is an observation area along the south runway which is perfect for monitoring movements.  A log of the interesting aircraft seen follows.

Aeromexico           73G          #DRA
Allegiant            752  N904NV
British Airways      772          #IT
Southwest            73G  N289CT  continues to follow me!
United Express       CR7  N763SK  CO c/s
Virgin Atlantic      744          #IP
Volaris              320  XAVOF
                     736  N119BD  a mispole for N319BD?
                     74L  VQBMS
                     767  N804MS

…plus four other EG&G 737-600s, a Copa 737, an Omni 767, and a BBJ in blue/white stripe colors (like the 747 and the 767).

HSH (4/7/2013)

I took a quick trip over to Henderson not expecting much, especially not a rumored elusive, hangared, and "up to who knows what" DHC-8.  I was thrilled on arrival to see half of Maverick Airways' fixed wing fleet of (3) B.1900Ds and (3) Caravans on the ramp.  The aircraft were beautifully polished, these guys clearly care about the appearance of their aircraft.  No DHC-8 was seen.

Maverick              BE1  N567MA
Maverick              BE1  N690MA
Maverick              CNA  N701MA

LAS (4/7/2013)
An evening departure from overly swanky Terminal 3 (airport managers, you're chasing away business!) meant that a few non-U.S. aircraft went in the logbook.  Those and a few others are noted below.

British Airways       744             #NLZ
Copa                  73H  HP1713CMP  #494
United                752             #5422, CO c/s
WestJet               73G  CFCNW
WestJet               73G  CGWSY
WestJet               73G             #253
WestJet               73H  CGKWA      #823

…plus a Thomas Cook A330 seen on departure earlier in the day and an American 737 in the controversial new colors.
