Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney plans for his team to get younger next season, which means Max Domi could get a shot to shine in the NHL.

Domi, who turned 19 in March, was selected 12th overall in last summer’s NHL Draft, and many believe he’s ready to make the jump to the pros.

“He’ll get a real, long look,” Maloney told Sportsnet 590 The Fan Thursday. “Max is strong, talented; we’re going to need talent in our lineup. He’ll get a long look [in training camp] in September.”

The son of longtime Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Tie Domi was passed over for a spot on the Canadian world junior team in December but tore up the OHL with his London Knights. He finished the season with 93 points in 61 games.

Domi’s tremendous offensive upside is something that could bolster a Coyotes roster that finished 19th in goals for and one where no player scored more than 51 points.

Mikkel Boedker, at age 24, was the youngest forward to play more than 26 games for the Coyotes this season.

“We’ve got some work to do,” Maloney said. “We have to turn our roster over a little bit. We plan to open up some positions for some younger people that bring more energy. I felt the speed of our team this year was lacking.”

The Coyotes lost seven of their final eight regular-season games and missed the playoffs by two points. Maloney pointed to a late-season injury to goaltender Mike Smith as a major contributing factor but didn’t use it as an excuse.

“This was a frustrating year for us in Phoenix. I thought we were good enough to be a playoff team,” Maloney said. “That’s two years in a row for us that we’ve missed… We’re not the highest-spending team, [but] I really think we have a great coaching staff. And with a coaching staff and goaltending and chemistry, you should have enough to get to the playoffs.”

Maloney, who played 13 seasons in the NHL from 1978 to 1991, has been the GM of the Coyotes since 2007 and signed a long-term contract extension last March.
