COYOTES (3-5-1) at HURRICANES (0-6-2)

TV: FS-A+, FS-CR

Season series: This is the first of two games between the Arizona Coyotes and Carolina Hurricanes this season. They split two games in 2013-14, with each winning in the other's arena. Eric Staal had two goals and two assists to lead the Hurricanes, and Rob Klinkhammer (two goals) and Shane Doan (one goal, one assist) each had two points for the Coyotes.

Coyotes team scope: Arizona finished October in last place in the Western Conference with seven points, but coach Dave Tippett feels there is reason for optimism. "It's early in the year. I think there's lots of upside in this group," he said Friday, according to AZCentral.com." You've got to recognize if you're doing things right, playing the way we can as a team, eventually your bounces or your wins will come along. If you look at [goalie Mike Smith], that's three of the last four games he's played very well. Our power play continues to find opportunities for us." Smith allowed two goals in a 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday, two days after the Tampa Bay Lightning scored six on him in the Coyotes' 7-3 loss to open their four-game road trip. Arizona's power play was second in the NHL at 26.5 percent entering Friday.

Hurricanes team scope: Forward Alexander Semin could be a healthy scratch; he did not participate on line rushes with any of the top four lines at practice Friday. "Right now, he's not in the lineup," coach Bill Peters said, according to the Hurricanes website. "We've got a couple guys back from injury so we've got the ability to take some guys out." Carolina lists forwards Nathan Gerbe, who has missed the past four games, and Patrick Dwyer, who has missed the past six, as probable for the game Saturday. Each has been out with a lower-body injury. Semin, who has not scored and is minus-7 in eight games, was benched in the third period of a 4-1 road loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. The Hurricanes have been struggling at both ends of the ice during their eight-game losing streak to open the season. They are 28th in the NHL in goals (1.88 per game) and last in goals against (3.88 per game), but should get help in both categories from Staal, who had an assist in the loss to the Canucks, his first game since he sustained an upper-body injury Oct. 11 vs. the New York Islanders.

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers got their payback against the Arizona Coyotes.

Scottie Upshall scored on a breakaway with 9:04 left in regulation to give the Panthers a 2-1 victory Thursday night. It was their first game at BB&T Center since Oct. 13 after wrapping up a 2-0-2 road trip that concluded with a 2-1 overtime loss against the Coyotes on Saturday.

Brandon Pirri also scored for the Panthers, who won at home for the first time in three tries this season. The goal was the third in as many games for Pirri, who was a healthy scratch for the Panthers' first three games of the season.

Roberto Luongo made 32 saves.

Martin Hanzal scored for the Coyotes, who are 0-2-0 on their four-game road trip. Arizona, which lost 7-3 against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, closes out the trip with games against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday and the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

Arizona has lost five of six; its only victory during that stretch was the game against Florida. The Coyotes had their four-game winning streak against the Panthers snapped.

Mike Smith made 24 stops for the Coyotes. Smith came into the game with a 4-0-0 record and a 1.06 goals-against average in his previous four games against Florida.

Upshall scored five seconds after he finished serving his second penalty of the third period. After Derek MacKenzie blocked an Arizona one-timer from the point, he stole a pass and fed Tomas Kopecky just outside the Florida zone. Kopecky spotted Upshall skating behind defenseman Michael Stone after leaving the box and fed him a perfect pass at the Arizona blue line. Upshall then beat Smith after deking to his backhand and sliding the puck between the goalie's legs.

Smith stopped Tomas Fleischmann on another breakaway with two minutes left to keep the score 2-1.

The Coyotes opened the scoring at 17:37 of the first period the same way they finished things Saturday night, with an Ekman-Larsson wrist shot on the power play. He beat Luongo cleanly in Glendale; this time his shot from the right dot went off the stick of Hanzal and into the net.

Defenseman Keith Yandle had the second assist on the goal, giving him eight assists in eight career games against Florida.

Pirri tied it at 5:37 of the second with one second left in a Panthers power play. With Yandle in the box for roughing, Jussi Jokinen faked a shot from the left wing before sliding the puck to the slot to Pirri, who beat Smith with a one-timer to the stick side.

Pirri also hit the post twice, in the first period on a wrist shot and in the second when he tipped defenseman Aaron Ekblad's shot from the point.

{coyotes} Smith's hustle, goal lifts Predators to road win

1989 - Taylor Swift / PRISM - Katy Perry / ARTPOP - Lady Gaga

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers will be playing at home Thursday for the first time in 17 days. Their recent four-game, nine-day road trip was largely a success, although it ended with an overtime loss Saturday.

As fate would have it, the Panthers' first game at BB&T Center since Oct. 13 will be against the team that defeated them four nights ago, the Arizona Coyotes.

"That game on Saturday is still not sitting well with us," defenseman Erik Gudbranson said of the Panthers' 2-1 loss at Glendale, Ariz. "Obviously the best possible situation is to face them again and get back at them and give them a good game. For us, it's really good. We're excited to play them. We're anxious to play them and we should have a good one."

Florida went 2-0-2 on its road trip, with two games decided in overtime, another in a shootout and the fourth a 1-0 victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 17 to start the trip.

"It was a good road trip overall and [we get] a little rematch against the Coyotes tonight [and I'm] looking forward to it," center Nick Bjugstad said. "It didn't end the way we wanted it to end the other night, but I thought we played well overall. Everyone played pretty well on that road trip."

The Coyotes defeated the Panthers on defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson's power-play goal. Arizona was 2-for-8 on the power play and Florida failed on their only two power-play opportunities.

The Panthers, who had three days off before the start of their road trip and four afterward, have played seven games, the lowest total in the NHL.

"It's been a good thing for us," Gudbranson said. "We've been able to work on our systems in practice, having good practice time and I think we've rallied around that obviously. Having that practice [time], being able to come together during those times is huge, all be on the same page and be able to put a good product out on the ice. It's been to our advantage for sure."

The Coyotes, who did not hold a morning skate Thursday, will be looking to rebound after a 7-3 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.

Arizona has lost four of five, its only victory during that stretch being the game against Florida. The Coyotes have gone 6-0-1 in the teams' past seven meetings and have a four-game winning streak against the Panthers.

"They've come home from a road trip, they've been sitting there waiting," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said of the Panthers. "We know them from playing them a couple of games ago. It was a real competitive game. Our power play came through for us, so we expect the same [Thursday]."

Goalie Mike Smith, who was pulled in the third period Tuesday after giving up six goals on 33 shots, is expected to start for the Coyotes. He is 4-0 with a 1.06 goals-against average in his last four games against Florida.

Here are the projected lineups:

COYOTES

Lauri Korpikoski - Antoine Vermette - Mikkel Boedker

Sam Gagner - Martin Hanzal - Shane Doan

Brandon McMillan - Justin Hodgman - B.J. Crombeen

Rob Klinkhammer - Kyle Chipchura - Martin Erat

Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Zbynek Michalek

Keith Yandle - Michael Stone

David Schlemko - Connor Murphy

Devan Dubnyk

Scratched: Chris Summers, Joe Vitale

PANTHERS

Willie Mitchell - Dmitry Kulikov

Brian Campbell - Aaron Ekblad

Dylan Olsen - Erik Gudbranson

Roberto Luongo

Al Montoya

Scratches: Colby Robak, Jimmy Hayes

Injuries: Dave Bolland (lower body)

Status report: Bolland (lower body) will miss his fourth consecutive game. Gallant said Bolland was day-to-day and wouldn't rule him out of the Panthers' next game, Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers. ... Upshall was the only healthy Panthers player not to take part in the optional morning skate, prompting Luongo joking that it was an "Upshall-nal." ... Moss (upper body) will miss his third consecutive game. He's listed as week-to-week. ... Hodgman, who scored against the Panthers on Saturday in his NHL debut, will be back in the lineup after being a healthy scratch against Tampa Bay. ... Tippett said he was reuniting Ekman-Larsson and Michalek as a defense pairing in the hopes of "stabilizing" Ekman-Larsson, who has a team-worst minus-11 rating.

Who's hot: After being a healthy scratch in Florida's first four games, Pirri scored in each of the past two games. ... Boyes has four points in his past four games after beginning the season with no points in the first three. ... Ekman-Larsson has a two-game point streak and had a point in six of the Coyotes' eight games.

TV: FS-A, FS-F

Season series: The Florida Panthers and Arizona Coyotes conclude their season series by facing each other for the second time in six days. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's power-play goal 2:20 into overtime gave the Coyotes a 2-1 win at Gila River Arena on Oct. 25. Since joining the Coyotes in 2011-12, goalie Mike Smith has allowed a single goal in each of his four starts against the Panthers.

Coyotes team scope: A full complement of players was on the ice for practice Wednesday, with the top line of Martin Hanzal, Martin Erat and Rob Klinkhammer back together, according to azcentral.com. Ekman-Larsson and Zbynek Michalek were reunited on defense. Smith would seem the logical starter Thursday given his past success against Florida, but his struggles against the rest of the NHL continued in his most recent start Tuesday. He gave up six goals on 33 shots and was pulled in the third period of a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, when Arizona started a four-game road trip. Smith's goals-against average jumped to 4.29 and his save percentage dropped to .858. The Coyotes team goals-against average of 3.88 was tied for last in the NHL with the Carolina Hurricanes entering games Wednesday.

Panthers team scope: Center Dave Bolland didn't skate Wednesday and is expected to miss a fourth straight game, according to the Miami Herald. Defenseman Aaron Ekblad is set to play in his eighth NHL game, and general manager Dale Tallon left little doubt in an interview Wednesday with NHL.com that the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft is likely to spend the entire season with Florida. "One of the reasons our defense has been good is because of Aaron's play," Tallon said. "He's played like a real pro. He's been as good a player as we've had and it's been terrific watching him." The Panthers will have had four days off since their loss to the Coyotes, which completed a four-game road trip. "It was a good trip, I think the guys feel real good about themselves," coach Gerard Gallant said. "Now we just have to make sure we take care of business at home for the next couple of games."

{coyotes} Kucherov hat trick leads Lightning past Coyotes

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC
1989 - Taylor Swift / Nick & Knight / My Everything - Ariana Grande

TAMPA -- Nikita Kucherov's first career hat trick helped the Tampa Bay Lightning defeat the Arizona Coyotes 7-3 on Tuesday at Amalie Arena.

Brian Boyle had two goals, Tyler Johnson had four assists, and Matthew Carle and Valtteri Filppula each scored once for the Lightning (6-3-1), who opened their four-game homestand on a positive note following a 3-2-0 road trip.

Kucherov gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead at 7:46 of the first period when he redirected a long slap shot from defenseman Radko Gudas between Coyotes goalie Mike Smith's pads.

The 21-year-old, who was drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round (No. 58) in 2011, lifted a backhand shot over a sprawling Smith to give the Lightning a 3-0 lead 3:20 into the second period.

Kucherov completed the hat trick when he took a centering pass from Johnson and sent a one-timer past Smith for a 5-2 Lightning lead at 8:23 of the third period. Eric Brewer had the second assist on the goal, which was Kucherov's fourth.

Arizona (3-4-1) pulled within two goals twice in the second period. Shane Doan scored his first goal of the season when he sent a rebound past Lightning goalie Ben Bishop following a point shot by Michael Stone to close the gap to 3-1 with 5:53 left in the second period.

After Boyle's first goal gave the Lightning a 4-1 lead, Martin Erat made it 4-2 with 1:08 left in the second when his wraparound shot deflected off Bishop's skate into the back of the net.

B.J.Crombeen scored a third-period goal for the Coyotes. Smith made 27 saves before he was pulled in the third period; backup Devan Dubnyk surrendered Carle's goal on one of the two shots he faced in 10:34.

Bishop made 22 saves for the Lightning, who will host the Flyers on Thursday. The Coyotes will visit the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

Season series: The Arizona Coyotes went 2-0-0 against the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. Martin Hanzal's goal and three assists, and Connor Murphy's first NHL goal, sparked Arizona to a 6-3 win on Nov. 16, 2013. Radim Vrbata's shootout goal lifted the Coyotes past the Lightning 4-3 on March 10.

Coyotes team scope: Arizona begins a five-game road trip after snapping an 0-2-1 slide Saturday with a 2-1 overtime win against the Florida Panthers. Center Justin Hodgman made his NHL debut and tied the game in the third period to set up Oliver Ekman-Larsson's game winner in the extra period. Goalie Mike Smith made 23 saves and has allowed two goals in his past two games after giving up 16 in his first three. Hanzal (lower body) has missed the past three games but made the trip and could return Tuesday, according to the Coyotes website. Right wing Dave Moss (upper body) is expected to be out at least a week.

Lightning team scope: Despite a 7-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, the Lightning earned six of a possible 10 points during their five-game road trip. "Overall, we're pretty happy with how we played in the five games in general," associate coach Rick Bowness told the Lightning website. Forwards Alex Killhorn (upper body) and J.T. Brown (upper body) each practiced Monday and are expected to play. "Felt pretty good [Monday]," Brown said. "Obviously, it's a little bit faster than riding the bike, tempo-wise, but it was good. I didn't think it was something that would be long term, but at the same time, you've got to worry about taking the right steps and making sure everything's safe." Tampa Bay remains without forwards Ryan Callahan (lower body) and Brett Connolly (lower body), and defenseman Victor Hedman (broken finger). The Lightning reassigned forwards Mike Blunden and Jonathan Marchessault to the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.

A 'heads up' for those interested......
Air Atlanta B747-441 TF-AMX is enroute to Tuscon from Brussels with ETA 2148UTC/1448MST.
It will clear immigration etc. then continue to Goodyear with STA just after 5pm MST if there are no problems encountered on the transit though TUS.
It is wearing Saudi Arabian Airlines livery though it's possible the titles will have been removed before it left Jeddah on Oct26th.

{coyotes} Paul 'BizNasty' Bissonnette to sign with Coyotes AHL affiliate

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC

NHL forward and social media celebrity Paul Bissonnette has been looking for work since his contract expired with the Arizona Coyotes after last season. He tried out with the St. Louis Blues, but didn't make the cut and has remained a free agent. The veteran better known as BizNasty will be back to work soon, though.

Just days after it was announced that Bissonnette had signed with the Cardiff Devils in Wales, the EIHL club announced that the NHL enforcer was no longer coming as he had signed an AHL deal. According to Craig Morgan of Fox Sports Arizona, that deal is with the Coyotes' American Hockey League affiliate.

It's interesting that Bissonnette will be back within the Coyotes organization, even if it's only on an AHL deal. Perhaps the announced deal Bissonnette had with Cardiff triggered the team to find a way to keep him close just in case.

After spending the last five seasons as the enforcer for the Coyotes, Bissonnette was not replaced as many teams have moved away from the designated fighter role.

Since he's on an AHL contract, Bissonnette is not eligible to be called up to the NHL team like other players would be, but if the Coyotes wanted him to come back, it would be a lot easier to make it happen than if he were in Wales.

Cardiff, which was the team Bissonnette played for during the NHL lockout in 2012, says there's no hard feelings despite losing out on a player that gained popularity with the local fans during his first stint with the club.

"I just heard from Paul (Sunday) prior to our game and he explained that he has been offered a deal in the American Hockey League that he hopes will lead to an NHL deal later this season," said Devils director Todd Kelman in a statement (via the Score). "I told him that I was happy for him that he is getting a chance to get back to the NHL and as much as we are disappointed, we wish him success."

Bissonnette has appeared in 202 NHL games. He has 22 career points and 340 penalty minutes.

{coyotes} Arizona's Hodgman makes most of first game

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Justin Hodgman figures he was in Belarus this time last year, or maybe it was Russia. Perhaps it was someplace else, he's not sure.

When you've had a dot-the-globe career like his, sometimes the when and where get a little fuzzy.

Besides, pinpointing the details of the journey aren't important now that Hodgman has reached the destination.

And not only did he get to the NHL after playing for nine teams in six minor and European leagues, the 26-year-old made a big splash, scoring a goal in his debut to help the Arizona Coyotes earn a much-needed win.

''I didn't want to take my jersey off,'' Hodgman said after Arizona's 2-1 overtime victory over Florida Saturday night. ''It's been a long journey.''

Longer than most, a testament to his determination.

Born in Brampton, Ontario, Hodgman had the same dream as nearly every Canadian kid with a pair of skates: To play in the NHL.

After four seasons of juniors with the Eerie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, Hodgman signed with the Chicago Blackhawks as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and was later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Despite his combination of skill and grit, Hodgman never could break into the NHL, building a resume that read like a hockey eye chart: IHL, ECHL, AHL, FHL, KHL.

The final three years of that run were spent overseas, one season in the Finish Liiga (FHL) and two in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Sensing his window to the NHL was closing, Hodgman headed back to North American earlier this for what figured to be one last shot.

''There were some tough times for sure, being over there, but I just made the decision that I was going to come back and give it a go,'' Hodgman said. ''I figured this might be my last shot with my age getting up there.''

Hodgman signed a two-way contract with the Coyotes during the offseason and had a solid preseason, leading the team in scoring with four goals and five points in five games.

That earned him a spot on Arizona's initial 23-man roster.

But his journey wasn't quite complete.

With a glut of forwards already on the roster, Hodgman was a healthy scratch his first two games as an NHL player and was sent down to Portland of the AHL, his seventh different league.

But after a brief stint with the Pirates, Hodgman was called up by the Coyotes on Friday after Dave Moss suffered an upper-body injury against Minnesota the night before.

This time, Hodgman was in the lineup, not watching from a suite in street clothes.

And he made the most of the opportunity.

Charged up by dual national anthems - the Canadian anthem was played to honor victims of the shootings in Ottawa last week - Hodgman had a jump to his step from the first shift, buzzing around the ice. He played a solid two-way game through the first two periods and capped his night perfectly in the third, scoring the tying goal midway through the third period on a one-timer off a feed from Lauri Korpikoski.

''That's why you play the game, to be an NHL player and score an NHL goal,'' Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. ''And to get one in his first game at his age is pretty special.''

The moment wasn't lost on Hodgman. Not after everything he's been through.

The years in the minors, the season in Finland, the treks across Russia - all worth it.

Hodgman had earned this the hard way and the joy was hard to contain, evident by the huge grin still splashed across his face long after his first NHL game had ended.

''It's been a long journey, but there've been longer, guys that have taken a little longer,'' Hodgman said. ''But 26, it's been a while, it's been a long road, but it was worth it.''

{coyotes} Ekman-Larsson strikes in OT, Coyotes top Panthers

Wal-Mart.com USA, LLC

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Oliver Ekman-Larsson has scored two goals this season. He's made them count, with each coming in overtime.

Ekman-Larsson's latest overtime goal lifted the Arizona Coyotes to a 2-1 win against the Florida Panthers on Saturday at Gila River Arena.

The Panthers gave the Coyotes eight power plays in the game, and the Coyotes capitalized on two of the final three. The last one came when Florida forward Aleksander Barkov hit Shane Doan in the face with his stick 1:25 into overtime, and it cost the Panthers.

Keith Yandle and Sam Gagner set up Ekman-Larsson, who beat Florida goalie Roberto Luongo with a perfectly placed shot to the far top corner for the win.

Ekman-Larsson scored in overtime Oct. 11 against the Los Angeles Kings to give Arizona a 3-2 victory.

Goalie Mike Smith made 23 saves and snapped a three-game losing streak with the win. Luongo made 39 saves for the Coyotes, but the shorthanded situations finally caught up to the Panthers, who went 2-0-2 on their four-game road trip but missed a chance to get seven points on a four-game road trip for the first time in franchise history.

After two scoreless periods, Florida center Brandon Pirri scored 1:47 into the third period for a 1-0 lead.

Rookie Justin Hodgman answered for Arizona with a goal in his first NHL game at 9:51 on the sixth of the Coyotes' eight power-play chances.

Florida got on the board following a turnover by Yandle behind the Coyotes net. Jussi Jokinen took the puck away and chipped it to Tomas Fleischmann, who found Pirri streaking down the slot. Pirri went from forehand to backhand and beat Smith for his second goal.

But back-to-back tripping penalties against Sean Bergenheim gave Arizona more time on the power play. It was after the second one that Hodgman, a 26-year-old who played the past three seasons in Russia, made his NHL debut a memorable one.

Lauri Korpikoski deflected a Yandle shot from the point. Luongo stopped the puck, but the rebound went back to Korpikoski, who pushed the puck to an unmarked Hodgman to fire it into a nearly open net at 9:51.

Hodgman had five points in five preseason games for Arizona to lead the team, but he was sent down to the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League after sitting as a healthy scratch the first two games. He was recalled with Martin Hanzal and David Moss out with injuries.

The goal snapped a scoreless drought of 127:09 for the Coyotes, who were shut out by the Minnesota Wild on Thursday and hadn't scored since Martin Erat's goal at 7:42 of the third period of a 4-3 shootout loss against the Nashville Predators on Oct. 21.

The Panthers and Coyotes had combined for seven first-period goals in 12 total games entering Saturday. They had 23 total shots in the first period, but neither team scored.

The Panthers had their best chance when Scottie Upshall set up Nick Bjugstad for a wide-open shot in the slot. Bjugstad hit the crossbar so hard he rocked the net backward but the puck bounced away. Arizona's Antoine Vermette beat Luongo with a shot in tight a few minutes later, but Pirri swept the puck away before it reached the goal line.

The Coyotes appeared to take a 1-0 lead 2:10 into the first period when B.J. Crombeen batted a Brandon McMillan rebound into the net. But video review found Crombeen's stick was over the crossbar, and the goal was waved off.

Luongo made one of his best saves of the night minutes later, robbing Ekman-Larsson in the slot with the handle of his stick on a power-play chance.
