RE: [cactuswings 3079] Re: Victorville List for 16/9/2014

All,

I agree with some of this, however spotting is an individuals hobby, with no laws or dos and don'ts set out in a set of rules.

How an individual spots, records what they see is their own choice, not for others to argue or disagree with.

I dot spot, but do not take re regs as I think this is a waste of time, you have seen a plane end of, I do not care what numbers are painted on it or what color it's painted in. My best friend takes re regs, and even takes the same reg again if the aircraft is in a new color scheme.

Mike obviously wanted a bit of help trying to identify some aircraft at VCV. I know it can be hard to identify aircraft here as I have been numerous times.

This is a hobby guys and sometimes we judge others too quickly and compare what we do with what they do.

There are no rules in spotting so cut Mike a break please.

The plane spotting police will not take us away if we get a few things wrong in our logs.

Regards

Simon

Hi Chris.

I agree with you 1 thousand per cent !!!!

It is great to know there are still proper spotters out there.

Keep up the proper way of spotting.

Cheers.

re: the above, several points:

Nigel Prevett (Assistant Editor of Aviation letter) and I spent around $250 getting to Apple Valley Airport,  and renting a Cessna to fly over VCV to do it properly. Our images took several days to fully interpret with IDs, schemes, etc. Most of these data were published in AL.  But my point here goes further that that, ANY list is really only good for the day it was done, and even then a/c leave and arrive at VCV frequently.  So even if you get a recent list, you will REALLY never know EXACTLY what you have seen. This a bit like fr24, it is an excellent tool, except sometimes it is wrong or incomplete.

Then things get reported that are not accurate which can lead to them becoming part of pseudo-permanent data bases.  There is really no substitute for a note book, a pen, and  a pair of binoculars, combined with an image where one can read the registration.

I, intended, in no way, to be insulting (or vitriolic) to you personally, but some of these new modern methods lead to errors, and the rest of us, some like me, having been spotting for 50 years, suffer.

Thank you for your kind attention in this matter.

Hi Everyone,

I visited Victorville on Tuesday 16/9/14 and I was wondering if anyone could supply me with a complete list of all the stored aircraft, present at the airfield that day.

Best wishes,
