GLENDALE, Ariz. – Oliver-Ekman Larsson scored on the power play with 14 seconds left in overtime, and goalie Devan Dubnyk stopped the final 18 shots he faced after a shaky start to allow the Arizona Coyotes to rally to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Saturday.

The Coyotes had 40 shots, and they need every last one of them to win. Tyler Toffoli’s hooking penalty with 1:19 in overtime set the stage, and Antoine Vermette set up Ekman-Larsson before the defenseman used a Shane Doan screen and picked out the top corner over the glove of Kings goalie Jonathan Quick for the winner.

Ekman-Larsson had a career-high eight shots in the game.

Tanner Pearson and Jeff Carter each scored to give the Kings a 2-0 lead 12:57 into the game. Arizona allowed five Los Angeles shots over the next 27 minutes and tied the game before the second intermission.

Vermette tipped home a Keith Yandle shot on a power play in the final minute of the first period, and Mikkel Boedker tied the game on a breakaway set up by Yandle midway through the second period. Yandle assisted on all three Arizona goals.

The Coyotes appeared to take the lead with 2:47 left in regulation when a scramble for a Boedker rebound in front of the crease wound up in the net. But Doan was penalized for interference against Carter, negating the goal.

The Kings came hard on the ensuing power play, but Dubnyk stood tall and then stoned Toffoli with 11 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Quick made 37 saves for the Kings. Dubnyk finished with 25 saves.

Dubnyk made his Coyotes debut in goal after Mike Smith allowed six goals on 27 shots in a 6-2 season-opening loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. He struggled early as Los Angeles pounced on Arizona turnovers to take a quick lead.

A collision between defense partners Yandle and Michael Stone foiled a clearing attempt before Pearson took the puck off the stick of Coyotes forward Lauri Korpikoski and beat Dubnyk with a wrist shot to the high far corner at 1:32. It was the first goal of the season for Pearson, who had two goals and three points in two games against the Coyotes last season.

The Kings made it 2-0 moments after an Arizona power play had ended when Carter gobbled up a Stone clearing attempt and squeezed a wrist shot between Dubnyk’s blocker arm and body at 12:57. It was the sixth first-period goal the Coyotes have allowed through two games.

Dubnyk came up big later in the period with a sprawling save on a Carter breakaway, and Arizona capitalized on a Pearson hooking penalty to cut the Los Angeles lead in half in the final minute.

Yandle made a great play to smother a Matt Greene clearing attempt and teed up a shot that Vermette deflected by Quick at 19:21. It was the first goal of the season for Vermette, who led the Coyotes with 24 last season.

The Coyotes dominated the second period. They outshot the Kings 14-3 and evened the score when Yandle caught the Kings on a clunky line change and hit Boedker in stride with a breakaway pass. Boedker beat Quick high to the blocker side at 10:50 for his second goal in as many games to make it 2-2.
