Season series: The Arizona Coyotes and Washington Capitals split two games last season, with Arizona winning in a shootout. Capitals forwards Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom each had one assist over the two games. Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle had four assists.
Coyotes team scope: Arizona became the first team to lose to the Carolina Hurricanes this season, 3-0 on Saturday, and has lost the first three of this four-game road trip by a combined score of 12-4. Goaltender Devan Dubnyk is likely to start with Mike Smith having lost those three games. After this, the Coyotes play three of their next four at home, but that is followed by six of seven on the road, where they are 0-4-1.
Capitals team scope: Ovechkin ended a career-high five-game pointless streak with an assist Saturday in a 4-3 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning. After starting 3-0-2, Washington is 1-4-0 coinciding with Ovechkin's drought. Goaltender Braden Holtby lost Saturday; Justin Peters could be back in net for the second time since Oct. 18. Forward Eric Fehr returned and scored his first goal of the season after sitting out Wednesday.
