{coyotes} Dec. 1: NHL debuts in United States

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: Dec. 1

1924: The NHL makes its debut in the United States when the Boston Bruins play their first game, a 2-1 victory against the Montreal Maroons at Boston Arena.

Fred Harris and Carson Cooper score in the second period for Boston after Montreal takes the lead when Chuck Dinsmore beats Hec Fowler midway through the first period.

The opening-night victory is one of the few highlights for the Bruins in their first NHL season; they finish last in the six-team league with a record of 6-24-0. But Boston finishes over .500 in its second season and wins the Stanley Cup in 1929.

MORE MOMENTS

1940: "Brotherly love" takes on a whole new meaning when the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the New York Rangers 4-1 at Chicago Stadium. The game features four sets of brothers: New York's Lynn and Muzz Patrick, and Neil and Mac Colville play against Chicago's brother combinations of Max and Doug Bentley, and Bob and Bill Carse.

1960: Gordie Howe has two third-period assists for the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 home loss to the Bruins, moving him past the career record of 1,091 points (regular season and playoffs) set by Maurice Richard.

1988: Bernie Nicholls sets team records with six assists and eight points in the Los Angeles Kings' 9-3 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Nicholls' big night overshadows a five-assist performance by Wayne Gretzky and a hat trick by Dave Taylor.

1996: Gretzky becomes the first (and still only) player in NHL history to reach the 3,000-point plateau (including Stanley Cup Playoffs) when he has a goal and an assist in the Rangers' 6-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden. Gretzky finishes his career with 2,857 regular-season points and 260 in the playoffs, a total of 3,117.

Wayne Gretzky of the New York Rangers.

1997: The Montreal Canadiens become the first team in NHL history to play 5,000 games when they step onto the ice against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Molson Centre (now Bell Centre). The Penguins spoil the festivities by winning 1-0.

2014: Arizona Coyotes' rookie Tobias Rieder scores shorthanded goals 58 seconds apart in the second period of a 5-2 victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place. Rieder becomes the first rookie in NHL history to score two shorthanded goals in less than 60 seconds. He beats Viktor Fasth on a breakaway 36 seconds into the second period, then scores again at 1:34.

Arizona Coyotes defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson has left Tuesday's game against the San Jose Sharks and will not return after suffering an upper-body injury.

{coyotes} Burns' OT goal leads Sharks past Coyotes 2-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Brent Burns scored a power-play goal 19 seconds into overtime and the San Jose Sharks wrapped up a successful homestand with a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

Chris Tierney also scored and Martin Jones made 18 saves. San Jose won four of five games on the homestand and improved to 8-3 overall at the Shark Tank this season.

Max Domi scored the lone goal for the Coyotes, who lost their fifth straight in San Jose. Mike Smith made 40 saves but had no chance on Burns' one-timer in overtime.

Martin Hanzal was called for high-sticking Melker Karlsson with 0.3 seconds left in regulation and the Sharks did not take long to capitalize in the extra period.

San Jose set up quickly in the offensive zone and Joe Pavelski fed Burns at the top of the faceoff circle for the big shot that beat Smith for his ninth goal of the season.

Despite a heavy advantage in shots for the Sharks, the Coyotes jumped on top midway through the second when Domi took a cross-ice pass from Radim Vrbata and beat Jones with a shot to the short side for his fourth goal of the season.

Alex Goligoski then hit a goalpost on the following shift for Arizona before San Jose found its stride again and tied the game late in the period when Tierney skated out from the corner and jammed a puck past Smith from in close. Mikkel Boedker got his first assist of the season on the goal, ending a 12-game points drought.

Both teams came close in a scoreless first period. Patrick Marleau appeared to strike first for San Jose with a wicked backhander only to have the goal waved off for offside after a replay review.

A few minutes later, Hanzal tipped a shot from Vrbata on the power and the puck deflected off both posts and rolled along the goal line before being cleared by Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

NOTES: Coyotes D Oliver Ekman-Larsson left the game after the second period with an upper-body injury. ... San Jose had 12 straight shots on goal during one stretch in the first period. ... Karlsson returned to the Sharks' lineup for the first time since Nov. 12 after being sidelined by a lower-body injury. ... The Coyotes scratched 18-year-old defenseman Jakob Chychrun for the fifth time in seven games.

UP NEXT

Coyotes: Host the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Sharks: Visit Los Angeles on Wednesday.

{coyotes} COYOTES (8-10-2) at SHARKS (12-9-1)

COYOTES (8-10-2) at SHARKS (12-9-1)

10 p.m. ET; FS-A, CSN-CA, NHL.TV

Coyotes team scope

Goaltender Mike Smith will start Tuesday when the Arizona Coyotes will go for their third straight victory. The Coyotes also will try for their third win against the San Jose Sharks this season; Smith made 41 saves in Arizona's 3-2 overtime victory on Nov. 19 at Gila River Arena, and was out with a leg injury in the Coyotes' 3-2 win on Nov. 1, also at home. Smith is 11-7-2 with four shutouts, a 2.09 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage in 21 career games against San Jose. He has more shutouts and a higher save percentage against the Sharks than any other NHL team. "It's a team you've got to be ready to play against as a goalie or you can get exposed pretty quickly, especially at this arena," Smith said. "I can't really explain the numbers. I think it's just a team that I know I have to be at my best against in order to give our team a chance to win." Arizona, which began the season 1-5-0, have won three of their past four games, including back-to-back games against the Edmonton Oilers. "Limit our mistakes, play the right way and work hard," Coyotes forward Jamie McGinn, a former Shark, said of Arizona's winning formula.

Sharks team scope

Forward Melker Karlsson, an energizer and key penalty killer for San Jose, will return to the lineup against Arizona after missing seven games with an injury to his left ankle. "He's a big part of our penalty kill, which has stumbled a little bit the last few games," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. "He helps in a lot of different areas." Karlsson was injured blocking a shot against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 12. He had an assist in San Jose's loss to Arizona on Nov. 1, but missed the rematch on Nov. 19. "They're a fast team," Karlsson said of the Coyotes. "When they get behind our [defensemen], they're hard to stop." Marc-Edouard Vlasic, the Sharks' top shutdown defenseman, will be in the lineup after missing the third period of a 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday with an undisclosed injury. Defenseman Brenden Dillon also will play after missing the game against Anaheim with an illness. Martin Jones will make his third start against Arizona this season; he has allowed three goals in each of the first two games on a combined 56 shots. The Sharks had a combined 82 shots in those losses. "We've outshot them the last two games by quite a wide margin but haven't gotten results," DeBoer said.

Coyotes projected lineup

Max Domi -- Martin Hanzal -- Radim Vrbata

Jamie McGinn -- Christian Dvorak -- Anthony Duclair

Tobias Rieder -- Jordan Martinook -- Shane Doan

Lawson Crouse -- Laurent Dauphin -- Ryan White

Oliver Ekman-Larsson -- Connor Murphy

Alex Goligoski -- Anthony DeAngelo

Michael Stone -- Luke Schenn

Mike Smith

Justin Peters

Scratched: Kevin Connauton, Jakob Chychrun

Injured: Brad Richardson (leg), Louis Domingue (lower body)

Sharks projected lineup

Patrick Marleau -- Joe Thornton -- Joe Pavelski

Joonas Donskoi -- Logan Couture -- Joel Ward

Mikkel Boedker -- Chris Tierney -- Kevin Labanc

Melker Karlsson -- Ryan Carpenter -- Micheal Haley

Paul Martin -- Brent Burns

Marc-Edouard Vlasic -- Justin Braun

Brenden Dillon -- David Schlemko

Martin Jones

Aaron Dell

Scratched: Dylan DeMelo, Matt Nieto

Injured: Tomas Hertl (lower body), Tommy Wingels (lower body)

Status update

Wingels will miss his second straight game. ... Boedker was benched in the third period against Anaheim, but he's expected to remain in the lineup on the third line. ... Domingue will miss his third straight game and is on injured reserve, but he was on the ice Tuesday morning, and Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said he wouldn't be surprised if Domingue is able to serve as Smith's backup Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings. ... Chychrun, the 20th pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, will be a healthy scratch for the fourth straight game. "We'd kind of hoped he be back in before now, but we won a couple games so we're going with the same lineup," Tippett said.

Who's hot

Pavelski has six points (two goals, four assists) in a six-game point streak. … Burns has six points (two goals, four assists) in his past four games. ... Couture has three goals in his past four games, all on the power play. DeAngelo has one goal and three assists in his past five games.

RE: [cactuswings 3723] LOG/REQ: Victorville-VCV 17th November 2016

Can see the top of the wings in a couple of the photos. One in particular clearly shows where the markings were painted out.

Thanks,

Roy

From your photos of the ANA 767's, can you see the tops of the wings?

They don't normally paint those markings out and are often the only way to identify them.

Just a thought....

Most of the fleet has been disposed of here so I presume their identities have been assumed from previous reports.
