The condition of Phoenix Coyotes forward Brett MacLean reportedly is improving one day after he suffered a "cardiac emergency" during a pickup hockey game.

"He's conscious and he's speaking," MacLean's agent, Anton Thun, told the Toronto Globe and Mail on Wednesday. "They anticipate taking him out of intensive care [Wednesday night] and running tests to determine why he collapsed."

Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said the 23-year-old received CPR on Monday night at the rink in Owen Sound, Ont. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance, then transported by air ambulance to Knight University Hospital in London, where he was admitted to cardiac ICU.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Brett and his family," Maloney said in a statement Tuesday. "We request that everyone please respect their privacy at this time. We will provide an update on Brett's status when information is available."

MacLean was a second-round pick by Phoenix in the 2007 NHL Draft and played 13 games for the Coyotes in 2010-11. Winnipeg claimed him off waivers last Oct. 5, then waived him 23 days later. Phoenix reclaimed MacLean and assigned him to Portland of the AHL, where he scored 25 goals.

MacLean has two goals and five points in 18 NHL games with the Coyotes and Jets.
