TORONTO -- The National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association have agreed to make wearing visors mandatory for players who enter the League beginning in the 2013-14 season.
The announcement came following a meeting of the League's Competition Committee at the NHL offices here Tuesday.
Current players can decide on their own if they choose to wear a visor. It's the same procedure the League used when implementing mandatory helmet usage in 1980.
The NHL and the NHLPA also announced a joint committee would be formed as early as next week to study potential changes to equipment for skaters and goaltenders. Also, the NHL said it would experiment with shallower nets and hybrid icing during the preseason. Starting next season, all high-sticking double-minor penalties would be subject to review.
All of the proposed changes are subject to approval by the NHL's Board of Governors in late June.
