{coyotes} Meszaros scores twice again, Sabres top Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Defenseman Andrej Meszaros scored two goals for the second straight game and the Buffalo Sabres ended a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Monday.

Connor Murphy scored 1:17 into the game for the Coyotes, who defeated the Sabres 4-3 in overtime in Buffalo five days ago. But Sabres goalie Anders Lindback shut Arizona out from there and finished with 28 saves.

With Buffalo clinging to a 2-1 lead, Lindback got the toe of his skate on an Oliver Ekman-Larsson power-play shot with four minutes left.

Brian Gionta added a shorthanded, empty-net goal with 1:49 left to give Buffalo a regulation win on the road for the fifth time this season. Rasmus Ristolainen scored an empty-net goal with 43 seconds left.

The Coyotes (23-46-8) continue to struggle at home, where they are 0-7-1 in the past eight games and 1-15-2 in the past 18. Goalie Mike Smith was solid and made 32 saves, but Arizona still fell short.

Buffalo (21-47-8) has two wins in its past 14 games, both on the road. The Sabres haven't won since March 17, a 2-1 overtime victory against the Boston Bruins.

With Coyotes forward David Moss camped in the Sabres crease, Sam Gagner fed Murphy for a shot from the point. Moss lifted his skate and the puck went between his legs and deflected off a screened Lindback and into the net at 1:17. Murphy's fourth goal of the season was his first in 26 games.

Buffalo dominated the rest of the period, putting 12 shots on goal. But Smith saved them all, robbing center Cody Hodgson twice, once on a rebound of a Zach Bogosian shot and again with the pad while Hodgson was all alone in front of the crease with 1:35 left.

The second period belonged to the Sabres and Meszaros, who had three goals in the first 52 games of the season but is suddenly scoring in bunches; he scored twice in a 5-3 loss against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

Buffalo used an early high-sticking penalty to Jordan Szwarz to even the game. With Mikhail Grigorenko battling Craig Cunningham in front of the Coyotes net, Meszaros put a shot through traffic and over Smith's shoulder at 4:27.

Smith made strong saves on Nicolas Deslauriers and Nikita Zadorov to keep the game even before Meszaros struck again at 13:36.

Deslauriers dug the puck out of the corner and slid it to Meszaros. With Zac Delpe screening in front, Meszaros put a low shot into the far corner for his second straight two-goal game to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead.

{coyotes} Insurance company agrees to postpone litigation against NHL

LinkShare_336x280 LinkShare_336x280

Amazon.ca - Ana Ivanovic - Angelina Jolie - Ashton Kutcher

One of the National Hockey League's main insurance providers sued the league last year, alleging NHL officials concealed the long-term effects of concussions and failed to warn players of the risks.

Now, according to documents fiiled in New York State Supreme Court that were obtained by TSN, TIG Insurance Co. and the NHL have agreed to stay, or postpone, the litigation for the time being, anticipating that the league may face more concussion-related lawsuits.

The NHL already faces a number of lawsuits filed by former players who accused the league of concealing the risk of severe brain injuries. The suits, which have been consolidated and are being heard in a Minnesota court, followed the National Football League's decision in August 2013 to pay $765 million to settle litigation over concussions.

TIG issued liability policies to the NHL and its partners for various periods from 1989 to 2001, according to court documents.

TIG asked the court to rule that its duty to defend the league may be limited because the NHL allegedly failed to comply with the conditions of the policies, which don't provide coverage for intentional wrongdoing or bodily injury that was "expected or intended."

A group of former NHL players including Joe Murphy, Bernie Nicholls and Gary Leeman charge that the NHL did not do enough to protect them from head injuries before it created a committee to study head trauma in 1997. Even after that, the players charge the committee's findings were not adequately shared with players.

News of the stayed lawsuit comes days after lawyers for the players filed documents asking a judge to order NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to testify about player concussions by July 1.

"Even if Mr. Bettman tried to disclaim the deep knowledge the NHL's initial disclosures say he has, ample evidence demonstrates that his 20-plus years of direct involvement in the subject matter of this case gives him knowledge unique and superior to any other current NHL employee," lawyers for the players wrote.

The NHL is fighting the effort to have Bettman testify. The league says the information he might provide could be obtained elsewhere.

The judge will likely decide about Bettman's testimony within the next six weeks, said a lawyer familiar with the case.

[cactuswings 3208] Re: LOG/REQ - Victorville, Mojave and Kingman October 2014

Hi Mark,

I think the missing ANA frame is JA8273. There's a photo on flyteam.jp labelled as JA8273 (ref 660763) showing three ANA 767s in various states of repair in 2013 with JA8274 furthest away in the scrap pan with another mostly dismantled, and JA8273 nearest the camera. Compare with image 773721 which is JA8274.

The latest Google Earth images show the nearest frame still there with the same defaced paintwork.

Thanks for your report which has been really useful for checking what still exists compared to what was beieved there a few years ago.

SABRES (20-47-8) at COYOTES (23-45-8)

TV: MSG-B, BELL TV, FS-A+

Season series: Sam Gagner's power-play goal 56 seconds into overtime gave the Coyotes a victory against the Sabres at First Niagara Center this past Thursday.

Sabres team scope: Buffalo is 0-4-1 in its past five games, including a 5-3 road loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, a game in which the Sabres had a 38-22 advantage in shots and scored three times in the third period. "We had a video session here today to talk about some of the things we did (Saturday) night. I think that was one of the most chances-per games that we played almost all season long," coach Ted Nolan told the Sabres website after an optional skate on Sunday. Leading scorer Tyler Ennis skated Sunday after sitting out the game in Denver with an upper-body injury.

Coyotes team scope: Arizona is back home after going 2-1-0 on a three-game trip against Eastern Conference opponents that ended with a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. The Coyotes are 1-14-2 in their past 17 home games, including 0-6-1 in the past seven. They've also lost their past four home games to Buffalo. Mike Smith has started each of the Coyotes' past five games, and he is 4-0-1 in his past five decisions against the Sabres. Coyotes captain Shane Doan will be available after the NHL Department of Player Safety said he will not face supplemental discipline for a hit on Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, who left the game with what was diagnosed as a concussion.

{coyotes} Penguins use three-goal burst to defeat Coyotes

Angelina Jolie / Grey's Anatomy / NHL Hockey / IndyCar

PITTSBURGH -- When the Pittsburgh Penguins looked to their captain, Sidney Crosby answered.

Pittsburgh scored three straight third-period goals, with Crosby factoring on each, to defeat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 at Consol Energy Center on Saturday.

Daniel Winnik, Steve Downie and Crosby scored in a span of 4:08 for the Penguins after forward Tye McGinn opened the scoring for the Coyotes early in the third. Crosby's goal turned out to be the game-winner as forward Tobias Rieder scored late for Arizona.

"I thought we just kept our head down and played the same way [in the third period]," Crosby said. "Even when they scored the first one, obviously you don't want to see that especially after the chances you're getting, but I didn't feel like we changed our game. We just kept playing the same way, and when you're getting chances like that I think you trust and believe that one's going to find the back of the net."

Thomas Greiss made 22 saves for the Penguins (41-23-11). Mike Smith made 43 saves for the Coyotes (23-45-8).

Each goalie was working on a shutout headed into the third. After the puck was cycled to Coyotes defenseman Klas Dahlbeck at the point, he sent a slap shot through traffic that was deflected by McGinn and through a screen by former Penguins forward Joe Vitale and past Greiss at 4:52.

Pittsburgh's rally began 2:24 later with Winnik's first goal as a Penguin. Crosby won a faceoff cleanly to defenseman Paul Martin, whose slap shot hit off Smith's pads before bouncing out directly in front of the crease. Winnik scored on the rebound with a snap shot past Smith's blocker to tie the game 1-1.

Downie received a pass from Crosby and put a slap shot behind Smith 9:19 into the third. Crosby scored with 8:36 remaining to extend the Penguins' lead to two goals.

Crosby's goal was reviewed and upheld. He leads the NHL with 78 points, two ahead of Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek.

Rieder scored with 1:51 remaining and Smith pulled for an extra skater.

Pittsburgh moved into a tie with the New York Islanders for second in the Metropolitan Division and is six points ahead of the Boston Bruins, who hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. The Penguins had lost six of their past seven games entering Saturday.

Arizona could not win its third straight since an eight-game losing streak from March 7-22.

"I thought we started the game pretty well and the second period, they took it to us pretty good," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "[Smith] hung around and kept us in the game and in the third period we got the lead, and unfortunately we took some penalties and they capitalized on it."

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang left the game after sustaining an apparent upper-body injury with 4:45 remaining in the second period.

Coyotes forward Shane Doan shoved Letang to the ice after the defenseman chipped the puck into the neutral zone. Letang fell onto his back, causing the back of his head to hit into the end boards.

Letang remained seated on the ice with his back against the end boards for several minutes while being treated. Downie and defenseman Rob Scuderi helped him to the runway.

Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Letang was taken to the hospital and Pittsburgh will receive an evaluation on his health Sunday morning.

"When it happened, I could tell that when he went into the boards, it was awkward," Doan said. "He's so good. We talk about it. We have to make sure you don't let him jump by you. I just went to make sure I got a piece of him so he couldn't jump by me and obviously, he went into the boards awkward. We have to finish our checks on him.

"You never ever want to see anybody like that, especially somebody of his caliber and obviously everything's he's went through the past couple of years, you never want to see that. So you feel awful as a player."

In what has been considered a rebound season, Letang is third on Pittsburgh with 54 points in 68 games, trailing Crosby and forward Evgeni Malkin. Letang played 37 games last season because of various injuries, including a stroke in January 2014.

Pittsburgh had the better scoring chances in a scoreless first period. The best opportunity came midway through the first, when Crosby fed a pass from behind the Arizona net to forward Patric Hornqvist, who held onto the puck instead of one-timing a shot from in front of the crease.

The hesitation allowed Smith to adjust and make a pad save with 8:54 remaining in the period.

The Penguins went down a man after forward Blake Comeau received a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding Coyotes forward Andrew Campbell with 6:47 left in the first. Campbell stayed down on the ice for about a minute before heading to the Arizona locker room. He returned in the second period. Pittsburgh allowed five shots during a successful kill.

Malkin missed six games after sustaining the injury during his first shift in the Penguins' 2-0 loss to the Boston Bruins on March 14. Hornqvist, who last played against the Detroit Red Wings on March 15, also returned, but forward David Perron was unavailable because of an undisclosed illness.

COYOTES (23-44-8) at PENGUINS (40-23-11)

TV: FS-A, ROOT

Season series: The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Arizona Coyotes 3-1 last Saturday at Gila River Arena. Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Tobias Rieder scored for Arizona.

Coyotes team scope: Arizona will try to go 3-0-0 on its three-game road trip, having defeated the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday and Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. "When you win, you are in a better mood. …To finish the trip off with a win would certainly be good," coach Dave Tippett told the Coyotes website. They haven't won three straight since Dec. 23-29. Goalie Mike Smith will make his fifth straight start; he has allowed 11 goals in four games. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson has four goals and seven points in five games.

Penguins team scope: Forward Evgeni Malkin has missed six games with a lower-body injury but could play for the first time since March 14. "If there's nothing bad [Friday night], if I don't feel pain [or soreness], come back in the morning [Saturday] and we'll see. I think it's a great chance [I will] play," he told the Penguins website. They have lost five of those six games (1-4-1) but remain in third place in the Metropolitan Division, one point ahead of the Washington Capitals and two points behind the second-place New York Islanders. The win was against the Coyotes. Malkin, who is second on the Penguins with 68 points in 63 games, would bolster an offense that has scored nine goals in seven games. Forward Patric Hornqvist (undisclosed injury) who has missed five games, said he is day-to-day. "I did all the drills, so we'll see what happens [Friday] and then we have a decision [Saturday] and see if I'm playing or not," Hornqvist said. "One day at a time and then go from there." Goalie Thomas Greiss will play, with Marc-Andre Fleury to play against the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.

{coyotes} Coyotes broadcaster charged with assault in casino fight

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- An Arizona Coyotes broadcaster has been charged with becoming belligerent at a Buffalo casino and biting the hand of an officer trying to subdue the former NHL defensemen.

The charges against radio analyst Nick Boynton include assault and resisting arrest.

Police say the 36-year-old Boynton became abusive toward patrons and security personnel at the Buffalo Creek Casino at about 1:45 a.m. Thursday. Later that day, the Coyotes said they placed Boynton on leave.

Officials say Boynton remained in police custody at a Buffalo hospital Thursday night pending his arraignment Friday. It could not be determined if he has a lawyer.

Boynton joined the Coyotes' broadcast team in July 2014 after an 11-season NHL career with six teams. He was in Buffalo for Thursday night's game against the Sabres.

{coyotes} NHL Central Scouting final meetings underway

Match.com Match.com

Brad Pitt / Britney Spears / Colin Farrell / Angelina Jolie

TORONTO -- The top evaluators from NHL Central Scouting are in place and ready to begin debating and scrutinizing the top 210 North American skaters and 30 North American goaltenders here at the board offices in Toronto.

The final meeting to determine the top 2015 draft-eligible prospects is underway.

This year's meeting will open with lead goaltending scout Al Jensen and his evaluations of the top North American goalies. The scouts will then proceed to rank forwards and defensemen within all those North American leagues.

As always is the case prior to each and every final meeting, NHL.com is very appreciative and grateful for the vision and foresight by former NHL Central Scouting director EJ McGuire. It was McGuire who first offered the idea of having a reporter from NHL.com sit in on the meetings to gain a better understanding of how the process is done, in addition to realizing how passionate these veteran scouts are when it comes to aiding the 30 NHL teams on draft day.

McGuire waged a brave five-month battle with a rare form of cancer, Leiomyoscarcoma, before passing in the early morning of April 7, 2011.

Jim Gregory, who served as Director of Central Scouting for many years before becoming Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations, always respected the way McGuire went about his business.

"He did his job and allowed others to do theirs and was inconspicuous," Gregory said. "He was a great person and he turned Central Scouting into something special."

Scouts in attendance in addition to Jensen and current Director of Central Scouting Dan Marr are David Gregory, Chris Edwards, Peter Sullivan, John Williams, Greg Rajanen and Troy Dumville. Director of European Scouting Goran Stubb will make his recommendations to Marr from a separate location on the top international skaters and goaltenders.

Williams, who finished his first season with Central Scouting, did much of his work in the Western Hockey League and Western Canadian region, working closely with the other veteran WHL scout on the staff, Peter Sullivan. Williams had served as assistant director of scouting for the Columbus Blue Jackets the past five years and his extensive scouting background spans 25 years, beginning with nine seasons in the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

Dumville will offer his recommendations of those players participating in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Also at the roundtable are video/website manager Luke McGoey, administration manager Nathan Ogilvie-Harris, senior director of information technology Jack Gerien and Central Scouting coordinator Jan Egert.
