Season series: The Colorado Avalanche won the first two games against the Arizona Coyotes. Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog has three goals. Coyotes defenseman Michael Stone has three points.
Avalanche team scope: Defenseman Erik Johnson, who hasn't played since Jan. 21 after sustaining a knee injury, did not travel, the Denver Post reported. However, he could return later in the eight-day, five-game trip that includes games against the Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. Forward Joey Hishon, who has missed three games with an elbow injury, could be in the lineup. Colorado hasn't played since a 3-2 win against the Flames on Saturday, and plays at the Ducks on Friday. "I think [the Coyotes] have a lot of pride in that room," defenseman Tyson Barrie told the Avalanche website. "They're not going to pack it in. They are going to play us hard, so we are going to try and have a good start against them."
Coyotes team scope: Arizona, which has the worst home record in the NHL (10-20-5), plays three games at Gila River Arena in four days. The Coyotes host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday and Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. "Very rare you get the back-to-back at home," coach Dave Tippet told the Coyotes website. "A real good team [is] coming in [Thursday] night." Tippet didn't say which goalie would start, but it's likely to be Mike Smith over Louis Domingue. "[Mike has] played some very strong games lately," Tippet said. "Especially since we haven't been scoring much, he's kept us around in some games." Smith has allowed two goals or fewer in four of his past five starts (1-4-0). The Coyotes have lost five games in a row, scoring three goals, and 15 of their past 16 (1-14-1).
