{coyotes} Coyotes still expected to sign Shane Doan: report

Shane Doan, who last season became the leading scorer in Arizona Coyotes history, remains without a contract after the first day of 2016 NHL free agency.

General manager John Chayka isn't worried. He said Friday he spoke with Doan on Thursday and has been in contact with the forward's agent on a daily basis.

"There's no real urgency," Chayka told the Arizona Republic.

Doan, who turns 40 on Oct. 10, has 396 goals and 549 assists in 1,466 NHL games, all with the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise after being selected by Winnipeg with the No. 7 pick of the 1995 NHL Draft. He passed Dale Hawerchuk for most goals and points in franchise history last season.

Chayka has been working on a one-year contract for Doan, who scored 28 goals last season, his most since he had 31 in 2008-09.

The Coyotes signed forward Jaime McGinn to a three-year, $10 million contract Friday. They also re-signed defensemen Kevin Connauton and Klas Dahlbeck, who each became an unrestricted free agent when he did not receive a qualifying offer from Arizona on Monday, and signed forward Ryan White, who had 11 goals and five assists for the Philadelphia Flyers last season, each to a one-year contract.

"Shane is so passionate about our team and our roster," Chayka said. "He's excited to see some of the things we're doing. [The first day of free agency] just adds a lot of clarity of how he can fit in and help grow the group and take this team to the next level. That's his goal."

Arizona signed five players to a one-year, two-way contract, including goalie Justin Peters, who is expected to begin the season with Tucson of the American Hockey League.
