Shane Doan received serious interest from three NHL teams but the free agent forward said Saturday he still plans to re-sign with the Arizona Coyotes.
"It was nice to know that there are other people interested and value you, I guess," Doan told The Arizona Republic. "At the same time, I've kind of made the bed and I want to make sure everything works out here as much as I can. … It was clear that my goal is to stay in Arizona at this point."
Doan remained on the market for a second day despite he and the Coyotes saying for months their intention was to complete a new contract.
"It's not done," Doan said. "But I'm hoping that it can get there and hoping that things kind of work out. I'm not worried. Obviously, I'm not worried. I think both sides hoped to be done before now. But at the same time, we're getting there."
Coyotes general manager John Chayka said Friday he has been in contact with Doan's agent Terry Bross on a daily basis.
"There's no real urgency," Chayka told the newspaper.
Doan, who turns 40 on Oct. 10, has 396 goals and 549 assists in 1,466 NHL games, all with the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise after being selected by Winnipeg with the No. 7 pick of the 1995 NHL Draft. He passed Dale Hawerchuk for most goals and points in franchise history last season.
Doan scored 28 goals last season, his most since he had 31 in 2008-09. The Republic said a two-year contract has been discussed but talks are focused on a one-year deal.
"We feel like we're close on most of everything," Doan said. "Just trying to figure out if it can all work inside their parameters and if we can figure out a way to make it work inside of mine, find a spot where it all lines up."
