After this season, The Arizona Republic points out the Coyotes have a sizeable class of restricted and unrestricted free agents but goalie Mike Smith is likely the team's top priority.
Smith is in the final year of a two-year deal worth $4 million and would be free to pursue other teams if the Coyotes can't re-sign him by the start of free agency.
Neither Smith nor Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney usually like to negotiate during the season but with the lockout, there's a shorter amount of time to talk.
"That's something we'll have to think about, but hopefully obviously ownership gets settled and that can look after itself," Smith said. "Just worry about playing games and doing well and whatever happens with contract, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it."
