How much spotting can you do in 24 hours?
One of the main targets during the trip planning phase was to do the FedEx and the UPS freight rush as there were alot of outstanding frames to be had. The only way to put Memphis & Louisville in one trip was to make it by car.
It soon transpired that with so many storage fields along the way and even single B727 and DC-8 frames scattered on various small airport and even off-airport locations this wasn't possible to see in a single day. So we added a couple of other ports we had never visited and made it a 2 day tour. We had paid a fortune paid for the hire car due to the one-way rental so we decided to make the best out of it. At least we could save money for the hotel as sleep was only to be had in short installments!
Following our Stuttgart mud adventure* we arrived at Memphis at 01:30 am with a packed FedEx ramp. To our research the outbound rush was to star at 02:00 and last until around 04:00.

The place had changed a bit since i was here in 2003 and the USAF seemed to have moved out and FedEx was now all along to the north of runway 27-09. Not knowing what runway direction was in use we headed for the terminal to check the car park as vantage point. It is only 3 stories high but at least for the daylight reported to be ok to park and spot from even with local security. Approaching the terminal we saw that a new 6 storey car park had been built. (visible on Google satellite view but not all of the Street view yet). We headed to the top which actually had a roof and the surrounding is masked with some kind of reflectors all around the MSCP that make it impossible to see anything, even from the top level.
We then ventured onto the old car park but figured out we would only be able to see 18L/36R and 18C/36C -or- 18R/36L properly. As we drove off a security car was seen making the rounds, so we would have probably not last long anyway. Another vantage point given was near the Signature FBO, but we still didn't like it that much due to limited views. Eventually i asked my mate to drive over to the car park of the local aviation school off the eastern end of runway 27, off Tchulahoma Rd. There is an ex FedEx B727-100 parked there for 10+ years, but i am not sure it's ID has been 100% confirmed yet? There is also now a nose section of a US Airways aircraft, likely a B737 or B757 from Greenwood, but we did not have the chance to ID it. Any offers?
Talking of stored frames, the first FedEx Falcon 20 is reported to be parked "at the FedEx headquarters in Memphis" - where actually is that on Google Maps?
The first FedEx departure was at 02:07am, but the next only followed 02:38 which gave us some time to snooze. But eventually at 02:51 it started and soon it was nonstop and too busy to tie-up the steady stream of FedEx aircraft towards runways 18R,18C and 18L from the SBS! (All FedEx aircraft bar the odd A310 and the ATR72 do plot on SBS, even the DC10s so if you zoom if far enough you can make out what taxies where)
We then had switch to tie-up aircraft up as soon as airborne as this was more foolproof. The tails are lit and the aircraft type was able to be ID after take-off from the airport/surrodunding light. After two hours of nonstop departures parallel on 3 runways and even using the 4th runway 27 at times a whopping 139x FedEx frames had hit the book!
After we stood around 1.5 hours on the parking lot a security car had stopped inside the fence and as we were parked close enough and had windows rolled down partly the guy disembarked and asked us to leave the car park as it was private property. We did just that and relocated into Airport Center Ln opposite where we continued to monitor the departures. After not even 10 minutes the same security car did show up on the outside and drove onto the parking lot - he obviously wanted to see whether we really left. But he didn't approach us at our current location likely because he didn't see us parked there or this was simply out of his jurisdiction.
After another 30 mins a police car drove past us and down Airport Center Ln. He came back 10-15 mins later and still saw us standing next to the road so he stopped and asked us whether he could help. Luckily the rush was just finished with only a handful of FedEx still on the deck, so we politely declined and said we will be on our way shortly. I then rushed my mate to indeed do so and my sixth sense was right as just 5 mins later the same police car had come back to check just when we were heading off. Would have probably entailed a bit more questioning this time if we had still been standing there.
All in all i can't give good advise of where to park to have perfect view of proceedings at Memphis during the night and not be disturbed by security. Maybe we were lucky to be left alone for so long already, or maybe we were unlucky to be visited twice. Anyway we had what we wanted and as it was 04:30 am we drove off towards Greenwood. Navigation headed us down south on Swinnea Rd and what i remembered to be dense forest next to the three main runways turned out to be - tarmac and the new USAF site! All C-17 outside were read off. Not sure why i didnt do proper research but likely since i thought i knew how MEM was like. A short look on Google Maps would have clarified that the airport extended towards the south. In hindsight with runway 18 take-offs probably being parked in a quiet corner anywhere along Swinnea Rd to the east or Airways Blvd to the west would have made things even easier to see and less stressful to tie-up.
Finally, and after having missed the fire station site at DFW the day prior i only now realise that MEM also has a firetraning site which is south off the airport, that houses former Northwest BAe146 N528XJ and former Air Canada DC-9 fuselage C-FTMG - both frames for me! They are visible on Google Maps and i am not sure they can be easily seen without having access.

Driving south on hwy 55 and using the navigation system to calculate distances due to time pressure we skipped the idea to find and see two single B727 frames that were reported off-site many years ago but are still visible on Google Maps, namely N88701 ex CO at Benoit,MS and N7027U ex UA at Itta Bena, MS. (A third, N7024U ex UA at Fort Pemberton near Greenwood, MSi was unable to locate nor found a report of it)
We arrived Greenwood after i had slept abit and what a disappointment! Google Maps shows 14 aircraft present and many more were reported prior, with me hoping any of the Jet Airways B737-700 would still survive.
Only 7 aircraft present and the only one that had a registration painted on it was an Onur Air A320 from Turkey - wah!

The SQ 777 was read-off under the wing, where the reg was visible despite being taped over from the outline of the letters.
The Philippines are odd, as it were definitely 4x A340 and not an A330 in between. That is 100% confirmed. But there are only three A340 known to have arrived at GWO sofar, with RP-C3431 being reported engineless at Clark, Philippines 29 apr & 10 oct 2014 !
I do recall an engineer at Kingman telling us that "taking off and putting on an engine is done pretty swiftly". Even these are four, i tend to believe that RP-C3431 was eventually flown here.
All others are operational and being tracked up to now on the usual sites.
The B747 is also presumed based on being the only PR B747 flown here. She had already disappeared during another reported visit April 2015 ! (nowhere to hide a B744 at GWO)
Disappointed and after some food and coffee my mate handed me the steering wheel an i drove the remaining 2 hours to Tupelo whike he took a good nap.
A first visit to this airport and another disappointment: also here the number of frames was far less than previous reports or on Google Maps, and once again only international frames remained with smaller stuff scrapped.
20 aircraft are visible on Google Maps at Tupelo - here is what we saw:

My last United B757 as well as my last MAS A330-300 were nowhere to be seen. Also no UA B737 nor any MD80 e.g. former Alitalia where i would have needed 2 frames reported here prior.
We headed back north and into Memphis, but there was no time to do the midday rush here but instead we drove to Graceland as my mate had never been here. The aircraft were reported to be scrapped, but recently i read their future is secured - for now.

From here we headed straight to Blytheville.
There are another two ex FedEx B727 parked in the vicinity:
N267FE B727-200 at West Memphis Municipal (AWM) some 30 mins and 25 miles west of Memphis.
(seen 1995 in Fort Lauderdale)
This B727 was actually flown to Stuttgart AR, dismantled there and transported 100 miles back east to West Memphis!
N144FE B727-100 at Millington Regional (NQA) some 40 mins and 30 miles north of Memphis.
(seen at Cologne, Germany in 1993 !)
Having been disappointed at both GWO and TUP basically wasting 6 hours of driving we didn't know what to expect at Blytheville, which was another first visit to an airport for us.
Blytheville is another former USAF base (Eaker AFB) which was active until around 1990. It was later used as a United States Postal (USPS) hub with various freighter airlines present. It used to have a Sunworld Boeing 727-200 parked here for many years along with an Emery B727-100 but only recently made it onto the list of storage and tear down airports.
A lot of Delta Dc-9-51 was flown here and with Delta being the main carrier using this place infamously many of the former SAS MD80 were flow here for parts but also a few gems, namely Lion Air Indonesia MD90s.
Personally i was mainly after a pair of ex FedEx B727-200s out of a handful flown here.
"Arkansas International Airport" but as we found no terminal and no scheduled flights...approach to the ramp is through the former army base with most barracks still present.
We were not disappointed by the number of airframes this time, though personally i did not make too many from that lot. Hunting retired frames becomes such a tedious task! :-)

There were more aircraft outside as we didn't note all SAS MD80s so say 2-3 missed from above list. But i suspect the various large hangars also had some aircraft inside.
At least i was missing needed frames N203FE, N211FE and N213FE all B727 FedEx reported here end/2013 and no sure wthey were all scrapped already.

The day wasn't over, and we were thinking of the next day already: the original idea was to get the UPS movements in Louisville during fly-out, again somewhere between 02:00-04:00.
However that would mean that we wouldn't make the DHL fly-out at Cincinatti, which FR24 revealed to take place only from 04:00 onwards. And in order to catch that, we would need to be in Louisville ideally at 10pm before the inbounds started.
So we decided to skip a visit to Nashville airport, something that turned out to be a mistake later. But more of that on part 8.
We had also long skipped to see the DC-8 in use as a residence "near Nashville, TN" which turns out to be Ashland City, TN using a Google search complete with pictures - but no exact location!
Does anyone know where exactly this vintage DC-8-21 is located?
Three hours later and some good sleep for myself we arrived at Louisville, where the SBS was registering UPS inbound already at 10pm.
With landings from the South we parked on an empty parking lot on Grade Ln not too far away from the tower. Inbound to 35R were almost directly overhead and regs could be read off with the binoculars! Which proved useful for the Shorts 360 which didn't even submit a hex code. Inbound on 35L were seen clearly and taken from SBS.
A couple of hours later almost 100 UPS were in the book and that leads us to Day 8 which will be reported in another e-mail.
