{coyotes} Shane Doan wants to return to Coyotes in 2016-17

After completing his 20th NHL season in 2015-16 and with an expiring contract, it seemed it could be the end of the road for Arizona Coyotes forward Shane Doan.

But on Friday, the NHL veteran expressed his desire to return to the NHL and the Coyotes in an appearance on NHL Network.

Doan has spent his entire career with the Jets/Coyotes franchise and is the last remaining player from the original Winnipeg franchise. He's coming of a season in which he scored 28 goals, which was his best total since 2008-09, when he scored 31.

When the Coyotes announced 26-year-old John Chayka as their new GM earlier this week, he said one of his first orders of business was to sit down with Doan and discuss his future. Doan is coming off a contract that paid him $5.3 million against the cap, a deal that kicked in at the start of the 2012-13 season.

So what will Doan make on an extension? Hard to say. For comparison's sake, 44-year-old Jaromir Jagr signed a one-year extension with the Panthers this week worth $4 million against the cap. Doan will turn 40 at the start of the next hockey season, but had 19 fewer points than Jagr this past season.
