Center Peter Holland could debut for the Arizona Coyotes. Holland was acquired in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft on Dec. 9 but was delayed because of visa issues. "A little nervous," Holland told the Arizona Republic. "A little excited. But looking forward to getting going." The Coyotes make their final regular-season visit to Joe Louis Arena after a 7-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday. "It is hard to win games when you don't have confidence," defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson said after the game. "We are going to have to start building our confidence back." The Coyotes are 1-4-3 in their past eight games. Coach Dave Tippett took exception to the effort against Pittsburgh. "There's a standard you have to play at in the NHL, whether you are a young guy or a veteran," he said. "We didn't play or compete at an NHL level [Monday], and that's the score you get." Captain Shane Doan is one goal from 400 in his NHL career.

Red Wings team scope

Detroit Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg did not take part in the morning skate and Blashill said his availability would be a game-time decision. The Red Wings are playing the third of a five-game homestand, having earned one point and scoring one goal in the first two. Detroit lost 4-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday and 1-0 in overtime against the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. As a result, coach Jeff Blashill juggled his lines at the morning skate Tuesday. "We've got to keep doing what we've been doing but with more offense," Blashill said. "That's what we were going for this morning." Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson will miss his third straight game with back spasms. "I skated today and it felt better, so I'm hoping I'll be able to play on Thursday," he said.

Status report

Murphy was having more tests done Tuesday and there's still a chance he joins the Coyotes during their road trip, Tippett said. Tippett adjusted his lines during the loss to the Penguins, moving Doan with Martinook and Crouse and having Perlini play with Hanzal and Vrbata. … Blashill moved Athanasiou between Nyquist and Vanek, with Sheahan dropping onto a line with Nielsen and Larkin. Sheahan is scoreless in 29 games this season. "Riley's a north-south player, and that's what we want on a line with Nielsen," Blashill said. "He's playing well enough to get points; he just needs a break or two." … Athanasiou is hoping to provide the speed that made Helm successful earlier this season with Nyquist and Vanek. "Those are two top-class movers of the puck and they can both finish, so I'm hoping I'll be able to open some things up for them," Athanasiou said.

Who's hot

Goligoski had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory against the Nashville Predators on Dec. 10. … Howard has a .945 save percentage in 14 games this season. … Vanek has a goal and four assists in his past seven games.
