ISLANDERS (15-15-7) at COYOTES (11-22-6)

Islanders team scope

The New York Islanders came back from their five-day break and lost 2-1 in overtime at the Colorado Avalanche on Friday on a power-play goal with 16.1 seconds remaining. "I thought we were pretty good coming off the break," captain John Tavares told Newsday. "We had some chances and it was an unfortunate [penalty] call in OT. Those [penalties] are tough to kill." After a five-game losing streak, the Islanders are 4-1-1 in the past six games as they try to make up ground in the Eastern Conference. "We needed two points, but we have to take some of the good things we did into [Arizona] with the quick turnaround," defenseman Johnny Boychuk told Newsday. "It's tough to feel good about that one, but we have no choice now." Boychuk scored New York's only goal against the Avalanche and will play his 500th NHL game Saturday. New York is 4-8-3 away from Barclays Center. Goaltender Thomas Greiss made 37 saves and has allowed seven goals in the past four games, going 3-0-1 over that span. Tavares needs two points for 500 in his NHL career.

Coyotes team scope

The Arizona Coyotes earned their first point since Dec. 15 but their losing streak extended to nine games (0-8-1) when they were beaten 3-2 in overtime at the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. Mike Smith made 32 saves but held the puck in his crease attempting to make a pass and lost it to Anaheim's Ondrej Kase, who stole it and scored the winning goal with 36 seconds left. "My stick broke and I didn't get anything on it and it ends up in the back of the net," Smith told the Arizona Republic. "I tried to do too much." The Coyotes lost three players during the game: forwards Martin Hanzal (lower body) and Jordan Martinook (upper body) and defenseman Jakob Chychrun (head); Martinook's injury appears to be the most serious. The Coyotes don't have any extra healthy forwards and recalled Laurent Dauphin from the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League. Dauphin had 11 points in 10 games with the Roadrunners. The Coyotes hoped to have Alexander Burmistrov available, but he remains in Canada dealing with visa issues after being acquired on waivers from the Winnipeg Jets. Arizona has its five-day break after playing the Islanders so Burmistrov will have to wait before making his Arizona debut against his former team on Jan. 13. Shane Doan, who will be honored before the game for his 400th goal and 1,500th game, scored his first NHL hat trick exactly five years ago (Jan. 7, 2012) against the Islanders; he got the third goal an instant before the final buzzer.
