The Arizona Coyotes acquired defenseman Jarred Tinordi from the Montreal Canadiens on Friday in a three-team trade also involving the Nashville Predators.
The Predators traded defenseman Victor Bartley to the Coyotes for defenseman Stefan Elliott, and the Coyotes packaged Bartley and forward John Scott to acquire Tinordi and forward Stefan Fournier from the Canadiens.
"[Tinordi is] s a big, young, strong kid who plays hard," Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said. "It's been a difficult year (for him), but we'll try and make it work here."
Tinordi, 23, has six assists in 46 NHL games over parts of four seasons with the Canadiens, who made him the 22nd pick of the 2010 NHL Draft.
"We are fortunate to have a lot of depth on the blue line, and for that reason it became difficult for Jarred to earn a regular spot on our roster," Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said. "He showed great professionalism and kept a positive attitude. We wish him the best of luck with his new organization."
Scott, 33, has one assist in 11 games this season for the Coyotes, who on Wednesday assigned him to Springfield of the American Hockey League. He was elected the Pacific Division captain for the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game in a fan vote.
In a statement issued Friday, the NHL said, "The League is evaluating how this trade impacts the Pacific Division roster for the 2016 All-Star Game."
Bartley, 27, has one goal and 23 points in 112 NHL games over parts of four seasons with the Predators. He has spent most of this season with Milwaukee in the AHL.
"Victor Bartley ... is a defenseman with good size with over 100 games played at the NHL level. He adds depth to the group of defensemen of our organization," Bergevin said. "Steady on the blue line he has shown at the junior and the AHL levels that he can also contribute offensively.
"At 33, John Scott is a seasoned veteran with 285 NHL games under his belt. He will be bring experience to our group of forwards with the IceCaps in St. John's."
Elliott, 24, has two goals and six points in 19 games. The Coyotes placed him on waivers Thursday and he cleared Friday.
Fournier, 23, has five goals in 24 games this season for St. John's of the AHL.
