Gary Bettman's reign as NHL commissioner is going to continue through the 2022 season.

Bettman has signed a seven-year extension to remain in his current role, Sportsnet's John Shannon has confirmed.

The 63-year-old took over the position on Feb. 1, 1993, 23 years ago this coming Monday. During Bettman's tenure, the NHL has expanded from 24 to 30 teams and experienced three lockouts.

@JSportsnet : As others have reported, can confirm that Gary Bettman has another extension as Commissioner of NHL. It would make 30 years at the helm.

 

@JSportsnet : Bettman's tenure would then mirror that of the 30 years of mentor David Stern, and be one short of NHL President Clarence Campbell.
