{coyotes} Doan scores twice, Coyotes hold off Canucks

VANCOUVER -- Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan scored twice to extend his franchise record to 383 career goals, and rookie Laurent Dauphin scored his first NHL goal in a 3-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday at Rogers Arena.

Doan opened the scoring with a deflection off his skate in the second period and added what proved to be the winning on a power-play rebound 1:13 into the third, giving the 39-year-old nine goals in his past seven games and a team-leading 15 this season. He passed Dale Hawerchuk for the franchise record by scoring twice on Dec. 31.

Arizona needed it after an apparent fourth goal from defenseman Michael Stone 4:35 into the third period was called back on a Canucks coach's challenge for offside, and Vancouver's Daniel Sedin scored off the rush six seconds later.

Louis Domingue made 35 saves and Tobias Rieder had two assists for the Coyotes (19-16-4), who have points in seven of the past eight (5-1-2) and are in second place in Pacific Division, three points ahead of the Anaheim Ducks and Canucks.

Domingue made a great pad save on a Jared McCann one-timer with 2:30 left and got a break when the puck ended up behind him in the final minute before he sat on it.

Bo Horvat also scored, ending a long slump, and Jacob Markstrom made 26 saves for Vancouver (15-16-9), which lost in regulation for the second time in seven games.

It could have been worse for the Canucks.

Sedin, their leading scorer, left three minutes into the game after Stone batted a loose puck out of the air in his own end and right into Sedin's mouth, knocking out some teeth. After a brief, bloody stop at the bench, Sedin went to the locker room. But he returned with less than eight minutes left in the period and finished the game.

Vancouver outshot the Coyotes 12-10 in the opening period, but Markstrom was forced to make more tough saves, including a sprawling stop on a Doan rebound chance. He made another great rebound save off Doan six minutes into the second period, diving back to deny the Coyotes captain on a rebound.

However, Doan scored less than a minute later after a Connor Murphy slap pass from the point hit his skate and went past Markstrom.

Horvat tied it with 6:19 left in the period, ending a 27-game personal drought dating back to Nov. 2 and a nine-game, 0-for-20 slump for the Canucks power play.

But Dauphin restored the Coyotes' lead 19 seconds later by scoring in his third NHL game. He was stopped in the slot after carrying the puck up ice, but the rebound bounced to Markstrom's right and Rieder's attempt went back through the crease for Dauphin to tap in.

Vancouver had a chance to tie it on a power play late in the second period. But Horvat took a hooking penalty as time ran out and Doan capitalized after Antoine Vermette batted a loose puck to Rieder all alone in front. Rieder had enough time to make three dekes before sliding the puck through Markstrom's legs and off the post, leaving it sitting just above the goal line for Doan to knock into the empty net.
