Well, that didn't take long. A group led by Irvine, Calif., based businessman Darin Pastor reportedly submitted a bid to the NHL on Friday to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes. That bid was rejected by the league Monday, according to multiple reports.
"The terms of his proposal were inconsistent with what we had previously indicated were the minimum prerequisites of a serious and realistic bid," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told Craig Morgan of FoxSportsArizona.com through email.
The league is believed to already be working closely with Renaissance Sports and Entertainment, a group led by Canadian businessmen George Gosbee and Anthony LeBlanc, on a plan to purchase the team. Gosbee and LeBlanc's plan is to keep the team in Glendale, Ariz.
According to Morgan, representatives of Renaissance Sports and Entertainment met with the NHL officials most of the day Saturday with lawyers for both sides present. Multiple reports in recent weeks have indicated the Gosbee and LeBlanc-led group and the NHL may be nearing a deal.
After the NHL's rejection of Pastor, who Morgan reported will go back to work on making the numbers work for another Coyotes bid, Renaissance very well could be the last hope for the Coyotes to remain in Glendale.
It's always one step forward two steps back in this unsavory ordeal, but one way or another, the end seems somewhat near.
