{coyotes} Avalanche get forward Boedker from Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes traded forward Mikkel Boedker to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday for forwards Alex Tanguay and Conner Bleackley and defenseman Kyle Wood.

Boedker is Arizona's third-leading scorer this season with 39 points (13 goals) in 62 games.

Boedker adds speed to an Avalanche forward group that includes Matt Duchene and Nathan MacKinnon.

"I think there's so much skill and so much talent in that lineup all the way through," Boedker told Sportsnet. "Just being able to work with them and see how creative they are and see their hands and skill. Obviously even with Jarome Iginla, there's a guy right there you can learn a lot from. Going into that lineup will be a tremendous opportunity and hopefully I can make the best of it."

The Coyotes selected Boedker with the No. 8 pick in the 2008 NHL Draft and he debuted with them the following season. He has 80 goals and 213 points in 445 NHL games, including career highs of 19 goals and 51 points in 2013-14.

"I'm grateful for the situation that Phoenix put me in when I was young," he told TSN. "I was drafted by them, but now it's on to Colorado. Let's see if I can help them win hockey games and go on a playoff run."

Boedker can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Arizona attempted to sign him but could not.

"When [the offer] was kind of pulled off the table that was a little bit of setback and a breaking point," Boedker said. "From that point on it has been going through your mind that a trade was a real possibility."

Tanguay has four goals and 22 points in 52 games this season. The No. 12 pick in the 1998 NHL Draft by the Avalanche, he has 279 goals and 850 points in 1,070 NHL regular-season games for the Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning. He has 19 goals and 59 points in 98 Stanley Cup Playoff games and was a member of the Avalanche's 2001 Stanley Cup championship team.

Earlier on Monday, the Coyotes acquired forward Sergei Plotnikov from the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Matthias Plachta and a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
