Season series: The Arizona Coyotes have won the first two of five games against the Calgary Flames, each by a 2-1 score. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has scored two goals, including the overtime winner at Gila River Arena on Nov. 27, to lead Arizona. Johnny Gaudreau and Mark Giordano each has a goal and an assist for Calgary.

Flames team scope: Calgary has won three in a row after a 6-5 shootout victory at the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. The Flames led 4-1 before falling behind 5-4 in the third period; defenseman Kris Russell's power-play goal tied it 5-5. Goalie Karri Ramo was injured with three minutes left in the third when Sharks forward Joonas Donskoi crashed into him. Backup Jonas Hiller made eight saves through overtime before denying three of four San Jose shooters in the tiebreaker. "We really needed these points, and I want nothing more than to help the team win," Hiller said in comments tweeted by the Flames. Rookie forward Sam Bennett had a goal and two assists, giving him six points (two goals) during a three-game point streak.

Coyotes team scope: Center Martin Hanzal sat out practice Thursday as a maintenance day but will play, the Arizona Republic reported. Hanzal, who scored in a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday, missed seven straight games and 11 of 12 in late December and early January because of a lower-body injury. He has seven goals and 18 assists in 40 games. Arizona has lost five in a row (0-4-1) and nine of 11 (2-7-2). "They're a hardworking team. It's never going to be easy against them," center Antoine Vermette said of the Flames. "It goes without saying, there's no easy game in this League, especially in the position we are. So, no, we are expecting a hard game. They're going to come up, I think they're going to want to address the forecheck early on, on their side. But [that's] something we need to try to talk on our side and emphasize as well. The focus should be on our side." Rookie forward Max Domi has an assist in three of the past four games. His 35 points (13 goals) are fourth among NHL rookies.
