Season series: The Florida Panthers and Arizona Coyotes split two games last season. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored a power-play goal in overtime when the Coyotes won 2-1 in Arizona on Oct. 25, 2014. Five nights later, Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo made 32 saves in a 2-1 win in Florida.
Coyotes team scope: Arizona had the day off Wednesday after a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. The Coyotes have lost two straight to begin a five-game road trip and three in a row. After scoring 16 goals during a three-game homestand, they have been limited to three goals combined against the Washington Capitals and Lightning. "We wanted a better outcome than what we've got so far," forward Jordan Martinook, who scored against Tampa Bay, told the Arizona Republic. "But we're right there. We're working hard. There's a lot of effort in our game. We're just not getting a bounce here and there, a couple breaks here and there. But we've got to capitalize on some of our chances."
Panthers team scope: Forward Aleksander Barkov and defenseman Erik Gudbranson are set to return to the lineup from upper-body injuries. Barkov missed the past six games, Gudbranson the past eight. "It's always good to get some of your healthy players back, Panthers coach Gerard Gallant told the Miami Herald."That's big for our club. It's coming." Barkov has skated on a line with Jussi Jokinen and Jaromir Jagr at practice this week. Jokinen assisted on two Jagr goals in a 3-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. Jagr passed Brett Hull for third all-time with the second goal, No. 742 in his NHL career. He has three goals in his past two games and leads Florida with 20 this season; it's the second time in five seasons since he returned from the Kontinental Hockey League he has reached the 20-goal mark (24 in 2013-14 with the New Jersey Devils). The Panthers are nine wins from matching the franchise record set in 1999-2000.
